Warning signs observed, creative issue lies ahead

640

What warning signs there were, were observed. Last season Qarabag beat Salzburg (who then won at Celtic Park), drew home and away with Twente and Saint Etienne, drew at home with Inter, and beat Europa League finalists, Dnipro. Remotely disrespect their challenge, and you’d leave Baku empty handed.

I think we would be over-generous to either team to make too much of the chances on show. James Forrest had the goal at his mercy, before choosing to make a pass, which, if it got through the immediate defender, would have found a heavily marked Leigh Griffiths, but shots from distance don’t count.  This was a game without real chances.  It also provided some evidence that James Forrest’s confidence is not where it once was.

The defence scarcely put a foot out of place but the performance of Stefan Johansen and Scott Brown was pivotal to the outcome. Johansen disrupted Qarabeg high up the field, showing incredible energy levels in that heat. Scott Brown held a deeper position throughout and got himself in the way of Qarabag repeatedly.

We had nothing going forward. Gary Mackay-Steven was put on his bum a few times early on and looked to be suffering heat-exhaustion more than anyone else. Nadir Ciftci was isolated, again, but the hoped-for link play didn’t materialise. He needs a link player. That’s a problem for another day. Between now and then, you and I have a Champions League play-off draw to worry about.  Once we know our fate we can worry about being more creative.

It was an absolute treat again to see the Celtic FC Foundation logo, this time on the first choice jersey.  Magners could have put their bottled water brand there instead, but they get what this relationship with Celtic is all about.  The help they’ve given our Mary’s Meals, school kitchen appeal is further evidence of this.

Our competition where you can win a Celtic third choice (bumblebee) top, courtesy of Mangers, closes at 14:00 THIS AFTERNOON.  To enter, email celticquicknews@gmail.com with the name of the country Mary’s Meals have built four CQN school kitchens in the subject line of your message.

If you can cope with the excitement of also sending a £1 or £2 to the appeal while entering, you can do so here.  Thank you.

  4. can anyone remember a time when all our best players are at the back? + the best keeper I have seen at Celtic.(pity we could not scout a goal scores as well as we scout goalkeepers) Thought it was a solid performance last night never thought they would score once we settled. Delighted to get through roll on the draw and the weekend.

Emerald Green colouring for the monikers, large, bold lettering working a treat when having a sleekit look-in at work.

Most of all is the evidence that Tims are leaving the SMSM in their wake as they access an all inclusive Celtic site. Why go anywhere else for news, match updates and the occasional political/tactical/religious/hun-Sevco-comedy debate?

  7. I am pretty positive that VVD will not be sold while we are in the CL.If we qualify,he will be with us until the January window. Then its up to him.I think we will sell in January. If he has a good CL group run,his money will go up.Its a no lose for both parties.I hate all this negativity after a great result. Some people saying”They were not up to much”.Hindsight,eh?.They have a very sound Euro record recently, but never mind, lets try a put a dampener on our own performance.

Just whatis happening at The Evening Times?.Not even the Record,at its worst ever came up with some of the guff that is spewing out of its pages. It has now turned into a Sevco fanzine.Even for our MSM,the recent stories and opinions are reaching the bizarre. We now have Walter and Richard giving it big licks,to follow on from the West Of Scotland fans disgrace.

    On Virgil…

If we qualify for the group stages, offer him a new deal, say around the same rate as Broony. Four years. On the proviso that if a club offers a certain price, say £15m,he can leave.

Or that if a club offers above,say,£12m,he gets a third of it.

This should satisfy his ambitions to play at a higher level-the CL-and keep him happy financially. It also puts him in the shop window for ‘bigger’ clubs as well as internationally.

And it’s not too shabby from our point of view either.

I wonder how much of that is due to Celtic ‘supporters’ treatment of one of our own.

Wasting your time.James Forrest is the new whipping boy at the moment. Its his turn.I really wonder at the mentality of some Celtic fans.It seems some unfortunate player has to be “The whipping boy”.Ciftci is already reaching this status after a handful of games.Probably the same ones that would never have us signing,Craig Gordon,LG.Better to just ignore them. Its not “Opinion”its a witch hunt, and they seem to wallow in it.Pathetic.

Given the number of goals we concede at corners, I’m happy to continue defending them the same as we have been doing.

Hitting the target (and scoring) from 20 yards from a ball going across you with a number of players charging out at you is not really high on the statistical averages. And if it does happen, I’ll say “well done”.

    ________________________________________________________

Can’t argue with our defensive record at corners it has most certainly improved no end. Though I wouldn’t have thought putting a body or two on the edge of the 18 yard box would affect our ability to head the ball away. Vertically challenged sides like Qarabag are never going to pump high balls across our defensive line, they will improvise as we saw last night. I agree if they score a raspper from 20 yards then all you can do is applaud but having a hooped Jersey nearer to the danger seems to make sense to me.

Re James Forrest. He is an extremely talented player but a section of the support do not rate his `contribution` and certainly show that at games. If we truly `supported` him, I am sure he, and we, would benefit greatly. In a sense, it is up to us. Personally, I am a Fan of Forrest.

  23. Another sign of Scotland police state taking shape with the Scottish government and police Scotland ducking questions over spying allegations on the press. The SNP claim that this is a reserved matter for the Westminster parliament so can’t comment. Didn’t stop, them when they were annoyed that They were being spied on by gchq.

Could it be that the SNP have enlisted the cops to spy on political opponents.

  24. RE Wee Jamsie:

Particularly him being a creative player, I can’t understand why those need to carry on over his apparent deficiencies. He is obviously lacking in confidence, and any criticism in the stadium, in the media and on the blogs will enforce his hesitant approach to his performances.

Support the lad unconditionally while he wears the Hoops and leave the rest to Ronny and Team.
