Watching Argentina took me back to Fir Park, 2005

1218

Teams can lose their competitive edge quickly.  The Celtic team of 2003-04 were imperious: 25 consecutive league wins, they beat every team in the country, home and away, on the bounce.  Larsson left, of course, but the following season’s problems were deeper than that.

Watching Argentina last night took me straight back to Fir Park, 2005.  A feted team, packed with reputation and talent, simply failed to compete.  Unable to match the industry of Iceland, or the ability of Croatia, they look like they want to return to the safety of club football immediately after the group stages.

Having great players is not enough if they are not sufficiently hungry, and keeping millionaires hungry for the SPFL is a challenge we will forever encounter.  On this front, we must do what we can.  Packed 60,000 seater stadiums help.  I’m sure open-top bus parades help even more.  These things create a sense of occasion and achievement, which is difficult to find elsewhere.

I genuinely try to look for the good in people, I appreciate your different perspective on Neymar and his back story.

I struggle with him because he is simultaneously so petulant and talented in equal measure. He leaves me perplexed to be honest

I posted a while back that I took the wife’s nephew to PSG, he flew from Tokyo with his Granny to see his favourite player:))

Unbeknownst to him I wrote to PSG to see if they could sort him out a signed photo or something like that, got a nice reply with instructions to go to the office on match day.

Signed top, t-shirt,photos and other posters and stuff from Neymar.

    Greetings,

Can you put this on the blog for me please. Appreciate the first hand knowledge rather than travel agents. Going to visit Pompeii with family around end of august/beginning September, depending on fixtures!! Can go for 4 days or a week so is it better to go to Naples and travel from there or sorrento type resort area. Only want to spend the day in Pompeii as I hear it’s very hot, not really any longer so looking for some tips so we can get booked.

    Thanks

Maybe it shows it’s possible to be a decent person off the pitch and a wee jobbie while on it?

  7. BMCUWP,

I have only been to Pompei for the day. I was staying in Rome at the time. I wish I had gone to Herculaneum too (it seems to be even better preserved). It was in May and not too hot. I had to pass through Naples. It looked very run down; so, I would think you would be better staying in the likes of Sorrento. But DO go. I really enjoyed it.

  8. Neymar is the best player I’ve ever seen in the flesh. Ronaldo and Ronaldinho are up there. Modric and Marcelo not far behind.

True but wouldn’t it be nice if those honourable everyday values transferred onto the pitch?

English media and fans in meltdown online about Brazil and Neymar makes me want to support them even though I’ve no real interest in the WC:)))

Equally easy to get to Pompeii and Herculaneum from Naples or Sorrento.

Sorrento is lovely, laid back and sedate, easy to get over to Capri and the stunning Amalfi Coast on day trips.

Naples not everybody’s cup of char; I loved the place – fast, edgy, sometimes beautiful, sometimes scarily run down. Reminded me strangely of Glasgow. Easy to day trip to beautiful Ischia island, and the amazing live volcanic Phlegrean fields at Pozzuoli, birthplace of Sophia Loren.

I would suggest your sis opt for Sorrento – there’s a really good regular train route called the Circumvesuviana between Sorrento and Naples with stops at Pompeii and Ercolano, so you can really do it all from there. And Napoli at night can be a bit tasty!

But whatever she chooses, she’ll never forget it – wonderful part of the world.

It’s not just English media in uproar about Neymar.

Check out the Celtic sites. He’s getting pelters, and rightly so. Cheating bassa.

Great example, his genius on the pitch is beyond question but he is also a gentleman off the pitch by all accounts, hence the standing ovation a few years ago from a packed paradise who knows it’s witnessing greatness. Neymar pales in comparison imo

The irony of the English media having a go at Brazil for making heavy work of Costa Rica, scoring in injury time:))

I guess they’ve forgotten the Tunisa game already.

Aye Neymar is his own worst enemy on the park.((

(PS: The volcanically-active Phlegrean fields is worth the trip to Italy on their own – amazing.

The ancient Greeks and Romans in Virgil’s Aeneid and other writings identified them as the gates to Hell.

But that was only because Ibrox hadn’t been built yet.)

I was working in Chatham a few years ago and went to the Shipwright Arms (home of Medway Emerald CSC) for one of our Europa League games.

Not the most pleasing on the eye pub but was full of Celts and a great atmosphere, not sure what it’s like on a non-matchday but it is certainly Celtic friendly!

    ——————————————————————

Thanks, I’ll give it a try.

  23. I have just watched the Neymar `penalty ` incident. Why was the ref`s decision overruled? Neymar exaggerated but he was fouled and it was in the penalty box.

    You’re a genuine Celtic mhan.

You put to one side your own feelings about a someone you have little regard for so that you can bring joy to someone else, for whom it meant so very much.

Personally, as skilful as Neymar undoubtedly is, he is honking with entitlement & narcissism and has no qualms about cheating (simulation) to gain any advantage or get opponents sent off/carded.

His greetin in the centre circle at fulltime said it all. It was in itself, more of his simulation – played out for TV.

Knowing he was the centre of attraction he sat there until the cameras flocked to him so that images could be sent across the viewing world.

Moments later, I saw him hug a teammate & slyly have a wee peek at himself on the big screens before promptly feigning more pretend tears/greetin face. The cameras lapped it up & the pundits on US FoxSports just bummed him up & ignored his odious side & the contrived “look at me” moment.

An overrated player & a poor example for footballing chidren around the world.

    ………………

As for John Terry – he clearly has some affection for & knowledge of Celtic.

I remember before a pre season charity game at Celtic Park, Celtic TV showed video from inside the changing rooms & there was Terry fawning over Danny McGrain so much I almost expected him to ask for his autograph.

I don’t know how fit he is, nor if he still has the ability he once had. He is a leader though.

All great teams have onfield leaders & sometimes of late, Celtic seemed to be short of those, particularly in defence. His experience at the highest level an only help us too.

A one year with option for both would be worth it for me.

    HH

  26. Didn’t see the game but delighted to hear Gamboa played well. Let’s be honest he doesn’t have a future with us but a good tournament drives his price up. Before the WC we would have got 0.5m if we were lucky. How much could we get now? 2m or more?
