Watching Argentina took me back to Fir Park, 2005

1218

Teams can lose their competitive edge quickly.  The Celtic team of 2003-04 were imperious: 25 consecutive league wins, they beat every team in the country, home and away, on the bounce.  Larsson left, of course, but the following season’s problems were deeper than that.

Watching Argentina last night took me straight back to Fir Park, 2005.  A feted team, packed with reputation and talent, simply failed to compete.  Unable to match the industry of Iceland, or the ability of Croatia, they look like they want to return to the safety of club football immediately after the group stages.

Having great players is not enough if they are not sufficiently hungry, and keeping millionaires hungry for the SPFL is a challenge we will forever encounter.  On this front, we must do what we can.  Packed 60,000 seater stadiums help.  I’m sure open-top bus parades help even more.  These things create a sense of occasion and achievement, which is difficult to find elsewhere.

CQN Golf Annual Charity Open

This year’s CQN Open is set for Friday 29 June at the first class Aberdour Golf Club once again.  It is a day of sport, entertainment, Celtic chat and is always good fun.

After the golf, we head up the road to the CQN friendly Woodside Hotel for our evening meal. We’ve the usual round up of all things Celtic by Paul67, and our very funny after dinner speaker is Willie Allan. Then musical entertainment from Scoogz, who you may have seen if you’ve been to Celtic Park entertainment nights. Plus all the usual prizes and charity fundraising, for the Petrov Foundation this year. Cost is £40 night only and £80 all day including golf. Please contact cqnopen2018@outlook.com if you’d like to attend this fun event.

Stop acting as if you are years younger than Dallas and I.

ps I am two years younger than J. I always looked up to him when we were growing up in Knightswood. Don’t tell him that. ????

  5. Don’t know why we are taking notice of Lennybhoys transfer info – look what happened to his French Eddie story – how did that turn out

    :))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))

  6. Have been an original CQNer since start. Was fairly good natured and positive about Celtic and perceived problems on players and tactics. Recent years have seen a denigration by many posters due to the survival of ‘Rangers’. And a clique of CQNers seemed to create their own subset.

I saw a gormless & adolescent comment which is out of place here.

However, I will not make direct reference to toxic individuals.

I hope to deny them the exposure oxygen they crave.

    HH always.

  8. Stretch away down south for £7M tomorrow Les? Didnae want to stay and play with us so that’s good business. The Ferryman was keeping him out of the team so he won’t really be missed.

Good luck and we move on with players who want to play with us.

If the DD rumour is true, welcome John McGinn and hopefully you are a better player than I think you are.

I meant you & Dallas better memories (& more) than me :-)

I know you would love John McGinn to don the hoops especially knowing him personally…..only saw bits & pieces of him but what I do think is Brendan will make him even better & even though it doesn’t matter, it’s always magic if the player is a bhoy at heart :-)

  10. The glaring thing for me in this WC is apart from VAR..book people who foul players, ref lets it go then gives a foul…

    Dallas influence…:)

Don’t disagree but the blog sphere has changed and is now full of mischievous malcontents and trolls.

However we shouldn’t expect the blog to without debate – that would be worse.

  12. That’s excellent analysis. Proving why Brendan rates Eddie so much.

Next season I think we will be wonderful again. Some records to break yet.

Not at all,old bean, just smiled at it.

    As you do.

Like I do when you talk about taking yer Dad to the game, makes me smile.

    And makes me jealous.

Any time I take my Dad to the game,we get gubbed. At least in Autumn.

I’ll be sad to see Stuart Armstrong go. His 17 goals in the Invincibles season plus his overall contribution that season saw him , in my opinion , become a very important player for us.

However , if he wants to leave , then he goes with my best wishes and gratitude. He may want to go as he might get a hair shampoo advert down there if he is an EPL player.

I have no qualms about signing John McGinn, he like Stuart , can run with the ball and I live in hope if he does sign, he will get better playing with better players . Stuart was very comfortable using either when required something , I believe , John would have to work on.

  16. Personally, I liked Stuiart Armstrong and his contribution to our success cannot be denied.

Difficult last season for him, but he is ambitious & there’s nothing wrong with that.

He’ll hopefully remember his time at Celtic with affection & we’ll see him back in some capacity.

As for the next stage of his career, Southampton are precisely that – the next rung in the football food chain.

They have sold on so many players to the top teams in the EPL & ex Celtic players such as Victor & Virgil will confirm that.

Stuart’s style is like Stefan Johansen’s & he’s been a big success at Fulham – one of their best guys last season. Stuart has fitness, attitude, energy, a nose for goal & a settled private life.

I think we’ll reflect on his preformances with pride as EPL pundits award him MOTM awards.

    Good Luck to him.

Now who can we sign that will improve us?

Back in from court, and it seems like SA is moving on …

I remember when GMS and SA signed, I was quite excited….

I thought Celtic fans would love GMS’s skill… and I thought SA was a future Celtic captain

GMS seemed overawed at Celtic …. while SA seemed underawed … he has all the skill, and on song, offered something that no other midfielder did … but didn’t see it often enough… and, of late, it did look like his head was already somewhere else

7 million is a bit more than I thought we would get for him, so I am pleased…

but I hope we have a sell-on clause … if he is motivated and injury free at Southamption, he could be a revelation, and will earn a big money move … so I hope we have a slice of that…

as for his replacement, McGinn seems a whole hearted player, but I just dont see the skill needed if we are to make a mark in Europe …
