WATERGATE: CERNY IN CLEAR

0

VACLAV CERNY has escaped a ban after spraying Celtic fans with water during last month’s derby at Parkhead.

After more than three weeks of deliberation, the SFA have followed Police Scotland in refusing to take stern action against the Ibrox player after his provocative actions as he celebrated his side’s third and winning goal in the 88th minute.

The Scottish football rulers have been content to issue a formal warning to Cerny who is on loan at Barry Ferguson’s Govan club and is poised to return to Bundesliga outfit Wolfsburg with just six Premiership games to go.

Basically, the Czech international has got off Scot free following a flashpoint moment in front of 55,000 Hoops fans that could have sparked an unsavoury incident.

The controversial scenes provoked fury in the crowd and police and security had to step in to calm things down.

Last week, cops decided there was no action to take after launching an investigation.

Brendan Rodgers accused Cerny of “a lack of respect” after the player had been caught on camera by Sky Sports during his bizarre celebration.

The Hoops gaffer, speaking in a report in CQN said: “It’s a lack of respect if a player runs up the touchline and squirts a water bottle in a supporter’s face. I certainly wouldn’t want my players to do that.

“It’s a very emotive game, an amazing fixture and I thought it was great to have the fans back in. I think that gave it that extra bit, as well.

“But I just think there are lines we can’t antagonise because, in this fixture in particular, that can lead to an issue.”
