Watt, Thistle and their history indulgence

325

After winning their four League Cup group games, Partick Thistle were battered on the opening day of the Championship at St Johnstone.  A draw followed against Morton, but since then they won their three games against Ayr United, Ross County and Raith Rovers.  St Johnstone look to be in a league of their own this season, but if Thistle win their game in hand, they will move three points clear of the pack in second place.

That means they are in form and will relish the chance of a home cup tie against League Cup holders and Scottish champions, Celtic.  The wild weather due in Glasgow over the weekend will also give encouragement to the home side.

On paper, Thistle should not offer much resistance to Celtic.  They don’t have the kind of money that even the likes of Kairat possess; I looked back a decade in Transfermarkt but there was not a single paid incomer in that period.  You will recognise one of the frees they brought this summer – Tony Watt.  13 years after that goal, Tony signed for Thistle, the 14th senior club he has appeared for, which is quite a stat for a player who is still only 31.

Whatever ails Tony, he is a player who has talent which is greater than his messy CV suggests.  He is good on the ball, can roll a defender and knows how to make the most of a big stage.

You and me might go on about 1967, but when Thistle fans indulge in history, it’s a League Cup game against Celtic they talk about.  Celtic were red hot favourites that day but went down to a record final defeat.  Learn from history and book a place in the semis, Celtic.

BURNLEY78 I did not name Peter Lawwell. I said the man that briefed against BR should be chased. I stand by that – it was an act of harm to Celtic Football Club.

*absolutely even if it was a tea lady or cleaner, but believing a correspondent from a tory rag, wtf I iwdnae be too keen tae go down tae Liverpool and admit that.

Long reply, which given the topic is quite funny

I agree about Ange and Brendan, both naturals in front of the camera, both very comfortable but also expert at delivering their message. No need for media training with either of them.

Different modus operandi and different messages, though.

I dont get the argument about a lack of communications from the club means Brendan stepping into the role by default – he’s not communicating on behalf of the club, he never has. what he’s saying isnt anything that you wouldnt expect from a football manager

The argument I do get is that he’s taken advantage of it to push his own agenda, which is OK, I guess if you agree that that’s part of the job. Dangerous and devisive, though, and with a communication style that taps into something a bit malign and encourages us all to behave even worse than before. As we see now with things almost out of control online.

But I dont think we should ever mistake it for communicating on behalf of the club that he seems to be at constant odds with.

I’ll bow to your greater knowledge communications but it always struck me that theres a balance between telling people what they actually need and what they want, and that if you get that balance wrong you could end up spending a lot of time and money trying to fill a very large hole that wont ever get filled. I get that Celtic need to do better, but we live in a time when so many of us are online all day waiting on news that will give us our latest dopamine hit before we move on to something else. We demand stimulus 24 hours a day, you could spend a lot of time trying to satisfy that demand.

It has got more difficult. Hundreds of Celtic voices with their own agendas with blogs and websites, shops and businesses means that getting the message heard is more and more difficult. They could come on CQN and argue in the comments section, or react to the replies to the tweet about the new training facility. I’d forgive them for asking whats the point when you read what passes for reasonable replies on Twitter.

But I agree, we need to do better. What that looks like and how we actually do it these days is beyond my understanding. Just doing more could be futile and very costly.

I don’t believe Rodgers Hannah made up the story and I’d be careful about suggesting he did.

Our CEO should now have established an investigation into the leak and be prepared to terminate employment once the identity of the informant is established.

  4. As michael settles down to watch us kick off vs Thistle, he’ll be proud of what he’s achieved since we were popped out of the champs league.

No response to the tens of thousands of supporters asking relevant questions

No response to the attack on our manager in the Sun, from coward or cowards unknown

No acknowledgement of another disappointing and disjointed transfer window

But he has commented on the new ladies pitch at Barrowfield

The £50k he’ll have earned since Alamty well deserved.

  5. I take the point raised earlier that the informant may be of such low moral standing that telling lies to cover their tracks may come quite easily to them. They may well be an accomplished liar.

In which case our CEO should issue a statement ( with his name on it) outlining the steps he took to identify the leak and issue a public fulsome apology to BR.

  6. For the hard of thinking…..

Celtic, like every other club have media commitments. These are normally linked to sponsorships and are a “must do” they are mandatory. They must be attended by senior staff, mainly managers or HC that why you see so much of Kettlewell, Robinson , Rodgers and the rest of them. They are asked pertinent questions by all media – TV, radio, written press and fan media and as far as I can see they all answer them as fairly as they can – they can only answer the questions asked.

Some of you have a big problem with BR and the press – would you prefer he didn’t do pressers? Didn’t answer questions (like the rest of the club) or told lies (“like the ……) How should Celtic fulfil its media obligations to communicate with its fans and the wider football world? FFS do you hate him so much that even him telling truth bothers you?

“I stand by that – it was an act of harm to Celtic Football Club.”

I dont agree. You could just as easily argue that it was the opposite, that it was an attempt to limit the damage that was being done to the club.

If we get beyond the fake moral outrage and start behaving like adults theres nobody who cant entertain the possibliblty that what was said had some truth in it. its not like any of it was new to us or we hadn’t seen on here many times before.

  8. CELTIC40ME on 19TH SEPTEMBER 2025 4:59 PM

I’ll happily leave a side morals because they’re not always shared. As in this case.

In a purely professional sense, there’s not a £100 + million PLC in the UK that would let what happened with The Sun go unanswered.

I say there’s not one, there is, unfortunately, it seems to be Celtic.

  9. BTW,

I’m not criticising what was said about BR, I’m critical of the fact it was done via media and unnamed sources as opposed to being raised formally and dealt with by The Club.

In other words, the informer should act with professionalism and integrity. I expect that from everyone at Celtic.

That awkward moment when one of the village idiots tells people they’re hard of thinking 🤨

  11. There may also be laws, fiduciary duties, bestowed on the executive that have been broken.

Such a high profile public attack on our manager may impact on share price – if it conveys a deep disconnect within the club.

Our CEO needs to come out of hiding and do his job.

  12. Good to see Brendan digging out Pep McCann and BBC Dodds, been after the huns manager from day 1,as if they have been hard done by,and trying to get back in,pathetic.

  13. SS- A pal read it all online yesterday, there was a re- application at one point, and a Letter of Comfort involved hence the 6 month delay

  14. AN DÚN on 19TH SEPTEMBER 2025 5:08 PM

“I’ll happily leave a side morals because they’re not always shared. As in this case”

    (Then doesnt leave aside morals).

“I’m not criticising what was said about BR, I’m critical of the fact it was done via media and unnamed sources as opposed to being raised formally and dealt with by The Club.”

It doesnt matter how the club got their message across – that Brendan Rodgers is behaving in a way that is damaging to the club – you would have had an issue with it, been outraged or some other performative bollox.

  15. Personal insults now……nice.

Before you take another potshot from your tower of superiority let’s make something clear on this.

BR does not call the media round to his bit to tell them news – it’s a contractual obligation and he answers the questions he is asked. If you don’t like the answers given try not to shoot the messenger. Now you could have argued that this is not the case but you chose to insult me…….

    What a cCelt you are….??

  16. AN DÚN

“I’m not criticising what was said about BR”

Which is good to know. Some pretty strong accusations in there

  17. I don’t think it performative bollix to expect and demand that our executive act with professionalism and in line with their legal duties to shareholders.

  18. The Argyle Street Celtic store will close its doors for the final time tonight, after serving Hoops supporters in the city centre since the 90s. But as one door closes, another opens – and next Wednesday will see the opening of our brand new flagship Celtic store on Queen Street!

*and some on here were linking this to the protest

  19. bournesouprecipe on

Good speaker amongst his talents, is Brendan Rodgers.

Timidus Maximus, whoever he is?- is still clearly having a Reggie Blinker, whilst our manager seems to gain more credibility? – with the fans and the rest of the “great guys” at the club.

It was pretty much over this board when the transfer window closed, by which time we’d slipped into the secondary competition. There’s no way back and nothing they can do to regain credibility, that was never there in the first place.

They did it all by themselves.

  20. AN DÚN on 19TH SEPTEMBER 2025 5:38 PM

Or a convenient way of avoiding responding to the accusations?

If you were really interested in the shareholders you’d take a bit more interest in what Brendan was accused of instead of being fake outraged, because if there’s some truth in it its very serious for the club.

  21. lets all do the huddle on

i wonder what the rationale is for moving the argyle street celtic shop along to queen street.

that bit of queen street surely has much less footfall than the current location on argyle street.

im assuming it will be to do with paying less rent.

  22. celtic40me on 19th September 2025 5:55 pm

You keep questioning my sincerity. Why ?

Is it really beyond your understanding that a Celtic fan & shareholder, may have grave worries about the professional standards within Celtic off the back of The Sun story ?

  23. Who would rule out Brendan briefing against himself to engineer his exit?

Who would believe a single word from a manager bleating “WE NEED MORE PLAYERS” whilst the players that he brought in last season, sat on the bench watching us failing to overcome Kiarat?

Only £30+ million worth of players watching on as another £40 million CL money sailed down the river.

Oh but its the boards fault.

The board should be blamed for stuff that they do, or don’t do.

Brendan knew that fans would blame the board and not a question would be asked of his role in this, clapping on the touchline, with last seasons players sitting behind him watching us lose to Kiarat.

So that level of shiftyness puts Brendan as my prime suspect for leaking stuff to the media.

Who would ever suggest that the manager who has programmed his players to 100% ignore, blank, the Green Brigade, and only one Tim has noticed[we need more noticers], same lonely Tim who refused to go along with punishing of innocent Rangers fans for the crimes of David Murray. Only a small club led by small people, and supported by small people, would go down such a dangerous avenue.

Depends doesnt it. You’d be an idiot if you took everyone’s word at face value on the internet, especially if you have some experience to draw on that might tell you about their motives.
