Watt, Thistle and their history indulgence

325

After winning their four League Cup group games, Partick Thistle were battered on the opening day of the Championship at St Johnstone.  A draw followed against Morton, but since then they won their three games against Ayr United, Ross County and Raith Rovers.  St Johnstone look to be in a league of their own this season, but if Thistle win their game in hand, they will move three points clear of the pack in second place.

That means they are in form and will relish the chance of a home cup tie against League Cup holders and Scottish champions, Celtic.  The wild weather due in Glasgow over the weekend will also give encouragement to the home side.

On paper, Thistle should not offer much resistance to Celtic.  They don’t have the kind of money that even the likes of Kairat possess; I looked back a decade in Transfermarkt but there was not a single paid incomer in that period.  You will recognise one of the frees they brought this summer – Tony Watt.  13 years after that goal, Tony signed for Thistle, the 14th senior club he has appeared for, which is quite a stat for a player who is still only 31.

Whatever ails Tony, he is a player who has talent which is greater than his messy CV suggests.  He is good on the ball, can roll a defender and knows how to make the most of a big stage.

You and me might go on about 1967, but when Thistle fans indulge in history, it’s a League Cup game against Celtic they talk about.  Celtic were red hot favourites that day but went down to a record final defeat.  Learn from history and book a place in the semis, Celtic.

  1. How much have we paid in corporation tax in the last 5yrs while hoarding money and starving the first team of players we needed?

  2. dessybhoy on 19th September 2025 7:15 pm

11.8miliion in corporation tax, honestly we sell players and give the Money to HMRC.

what would you do Dessy ?

Looking forward, myself and the Executive team will continue to represent our Club at the highest level of domestic and European football.

    he is going nowhere.

  4. I would invest in the playing staff and the facilities for spectators, what would you do?This is madness giving this amount of money to HMRC on our turnover, we arent Rolls Royce, we are a small plc that hasnt a clue or a strategy of using funds to grow the club. Why charge for season tickets at the prices charged for the money to go to the Treasury, is that where the supporters expect their money to go to?

Some nonsense being said about the tea lady and family member, as if that would prevent a club official from being sanctioned.

It is the act of disclosing the information to whomever. Doesn’t matter if the tea lady overheard, or a suit directly providing the info to the media. It is the obligation of a member of staff, or the board to ensure that such information doesn’t leave the building.

i answered the other day, to avoid tax we need to spend all rincoming revenue in the same financial year, so have a plan.

8 full programme of works for stadium refurbishment costing x.

    * plan to recruit in january with a statement players for champions league qualification.

    * no players sold in january, as we cannot spend the money fast enough.

    at least have a plan.

i do not agree with the “too volatile for revenue streams” . it is not difficult at all , it is very predictable.

That’s better than what happen now with this board but they would shit themselves having to spend all that money coming in.

WOW what a boost for the protests

Not even a back of fag packet but from 30 June, you can add a cool £30M in transfers and two windfalls.

  11. Disappointing to see the Celtic and St Pauli link eroded by the Palestine situation.

I guess I don’t fully understand the German laws and sense of right and wrong but the group of 6 of their fans I met 2 weeks ago were pretty damning in their condemnation of Celtic fans endorsement and support for the people of Palestine.

I asked if their views were typical of St Pauli and they reckoned about 95% or more of their support felt that way and had discarded their support for Celtic (either passive or active).

I always had a soft spot for them as a bit anarchic but I kinda they are more of an Amazon documentary now than the real rebel club they were.

  12. Curious is there a list of those really good players our manager and his team identified and we wanted to go after and failed ?

If so where are these guys now ?

Why did we not get them and have we missed out ?

Eg did BR and recruitment team highlight the 3 Brugge stars from last night ? Or did they miss those guys ?

    —————-

some news for you, the plc will now be able to argue we are spending what we bring in during the financial year , while paying corporation tax on profits,

evidence, the bank balnce did not go up, despite daft claims for the last 3 monthsi it will be £100m +

    btw,

much of the corporation tax can be offset on capital spending, they will get it back.

Maybe the annual report will detail the capex spending, other than dugouts, corportae boxes, there is little evidence of spending at celtic park.

as i said earlier, if Barrowfield was £12m, they aing getting much for that . imho.

  14. dessybhoy on 19th September 2025 7:38 pm

Anyone got the figure for the last 5 years of Corporation Tax paid by Celtic?

I wil get it tomorrow, and the capex allowance.

  15. Only a Celtic supporter would rage against the amount of Company Tax (a percentage of profit) paid by his own club.

DESSYBHOY – You’re just making an absolute fool of yourself.

  16. The PLC exists to support the football operation.

Would appear something has become disjointed somewhere

Cowards, who are good with money 💰

  17. So Burnley, stick in the Squirrel of St Pauli, distracting from,or trying your best to, the outrageous financial statement,( Again on a weekend ),by your idols on the Board.

These figures dont even count in the money earned after the June 30th.An absolute disgrace.

How you can try to justify these figures, while we scramble about ,last minute in the market, tells me all I need to know about you.

  18. In total and including committed agent fees, £42.6m was invested in player acquisitions during the year, more than doubling the prior year spend, marking the highest single-season investment in the Club’s history including twice breaking the Club transfer record

    thats pretty sobering

  19. Hey boss, I’m sick to death of paying so much PAYE income tax. Please cut my salary by 50% so I don’t need to pay so much.

  20. The Blogger Formerly Known As GM on

I see the annual report is out.

Was there an accompanying statement saying either Peter Lawwell or Michael Nicholson has resigned as was “rumoured” yesterday?

  21. TMcL

Garbage, why should any supporter pay massive prices for season tickets, which creates profit for the company because they do not reinvest but pay the Treasury huge amounts of Corporation Tax, why?

If could go above 100% in agreement it would be 150%

  23. If those results were any on the park they would be CL level of competence. So every penny of the season tickets and more pays the wages of the team and staff. The board keep Celtic in a position of strength, and yet many spend so much energy hating and dividing our club. 5 in a row this year, and a cup or two won’t put smiles on everyone mug.

  24. Burnley,

    Here is your list,
