‘WE AIM TO CREATE NEW HISTORY,’ RODGERS

BRENDAN RODGERS is Celtic manager AND Celtic fan, so he is well aware of what the club is all about.

As he prepares his team for tomorrow’s Scottish Cup semi-final, he realises how close his favourite team is to making even more illustrious history.

The champions are three points away from their seventh successive title, the League Cup is already in the trophy room and there are two Cup-ties between the team and unprecedented success.

Last year, Rodgers enjoyed attending the spectacular Glasgow Hydro show as the Parkhead side marked the 50th anniversary of the Lisbon Lions becoming the first UK club to conquer Europe.

He wants the Class of 2018 to use the past as an inspiration, but to remain focused on the present as they aim to make their own place in the club’s folklore.

The Celtic gaffer said: “This club has a wonderful history and we want to use that as motivation to create new history while we are here.

“As we sit here now, the players have already done last season what no other team in the history of Scottish football has ever done.

“No team has gone through a season without losing a game to win a treble.

“It was only the fourth treble in Celtic’s history, under three managers. So the players are already there in the history books. But we don’t think about that right now. We will all be judged when we leave this club.

“Right now, we still have to close out the league, but we are in a brilliant position to do that.

“Victory on Sunday gets you to the Final and the opportunity of winning the Scottish Cup.

“In the present, you just have to keep on fighting and working to create new history and keep looking to raise the bar and the standards. That’s all we think about right now.

“But in 25 years time, we might get an invitation to the Hydro.”
