We are Celtic, ambition

1392

On Thursday I wrote Brendan Rodgers ‘will be a remarkable signing’.  One day after the event, it feels very remarkable.  Some found it so remarkable they have attempted a smile for the first time since Artmedia took the lead.  I’ve even spoken to Newco fans who were engaged by the appointment.  The aphorism, a rising tide lifts all boats, feels apt.

Some weeks ago I heard Peter Lawwell talk about the difficulty of landing a top tier manager in our current environment, however, he finished with a positive “But we are Celtic”.  People want to come here; managers, players, even tourists.  For all the Scottish game’s limits, we are Celtic, let’s not forget.

We’ve used some of that cachet to bring people to the game.  There will be more cameras, more reporters, more international media, more TV viewers and many more glutes on seats next season.  This will reflect on all.

Our media rights are worth more today than they were a week ago.  Consider for a moment how Dafabet and Magners view yesterday’s news?  For all they knew when they signed their shirt deals, we could have had Owen Coyle in charge next season, unless his auntie told them otherwise [an old CQN in-joke].

I’m pleased to hear so many comments that this is a sign of ambition, although ambition is always more nuanced than it appears.  Ambition every year is to win the league and qualify for the Champions League, that’s always the plan, whether it happens, or if it’s only half achieved.  Hopefully the ambition is loaded with a little authority this summer.

Sannabhoy asked me to pass on these comments on behalf of the Kano Foundation to the CQN community:

“To round the season off the Kano Foundation had a visit from Almore to present us with a donation from the Dublin 1916 CQN gathering on Sunday for the sum of £580.

“As you know, this event, to commemorate the Easter rising of 1916, was organised by CQNers Almore and ClogherCelt, and featured 30 CQN members among the 70 scots who travelled over to join the 120 locals at the festivities.  A brilliant time was had by all (just to rub it in to the absentees).

“Brian Ainslie, trustee, is pictured here receiving the cheque from Almore and Delaney’s Dunky.
Kano cheque
“On behalf of The Kano Foundation it gives us great pride and pleasure to accept this fantastic donation.  We appreciate the numerous good causes that are out there and to be beneficiaries of this, and the historically significant events it commemorates, is humbling and makes the efforts of the patrons, ambassadors, volunteers and trustees worthwhile.

“To Martin Connor and Alan Curran, who organised it, we’d just like to say, on behalf of the almost 5000 kids we have taken to Celtic Park, thank you very much.  Without support like yours we couldn’t continue to do this. Hail Hail.

“On that note, I’m away for a kip until next season – I’ll need it – we can take 2000 kids next year . HELP!!”

What a stunning community you are.  Well done.

The only evidence of assault on a sevcont yesterday is Kenny Miller’s coupon which looks as if it had a severe blootering.

    One observation from yesterday…..

Why were the Huns on the park ?????

The Hibs fans celebrating and goading them ……..

Away an gie me peace, the “people” can’t accept defeat, their misguided better than all the rest mantra is pure crap, they think they are above the law

  3. saltires en sevilla on

Anyone looking objectively at yesterday’s aftermatch debacle, must eventually reach the logical conclusion that every time ex- rankers, and now it seems the tribute mob sevco, get humped in big games they will resort to violence. Their faux sense of entitlement and superiority will cause that inner rage to errupt.

    The common denominator.

An explosion of unrestrained joy from Hibs fans after their team scored in added time led to that invasion, no malicious intent!

My thoughts immediately returned to 1980, and I knew what would happen next, everyone who knows anything about fitba in Scotland knew what was going to happen next!

What were stadium security doing at the time , they must have anticipated it? Whatever was planned to manage a field invasion, failed and failed badly. The outcome could have been a lot worse.

What possible viable reason did sevco fans have to go on pitch? – apart from unrestrained hatred!

Posted at the time the lack of stewarding and police intervention at Mount Florida end was unbelievable – they were pouring on looking to cause bother. In fairness a few cops were trying to get in between both sets of fans, but were totally swamped.

When the light brigade did eventually mount and form up… They immediately ( maybe instinctively) faced up to the green clad hibees fans, when it was self-evident that the chelski fans were the group more intent on causing bother.

Surely the order to drive a line between both groups then clear the smaller group ( chelski) from the field was the sensible primary objective? Then, when they were under control, turn to clear the hibees from the field.

An utter shambles and not expecting any clarity from the forthcoming enquiry.

Glad it seems there were no serious physical injuries, other than some bloody noses and bruised pride!

It’s not booze that should have been banned in 1980, it is unfettered sectarian bigotry and it is clearly originating and continuing to fester in the Rangers/Sevco support. We were subjected to another 90 minutes of full on sectarian singing from them yesterday.

When can we expect both teams to be summoned to an urgent meeting…oh wait a minute..!

    Don’t hold your breath.

I heard a few days, if that, after the semi final that DD was one unhappy bunny.

If that defeat and his treatment caused a turn around in DD’s attitude there is more joy in heaven etc.

Personally I never bought into the narrative of DD thinking the same as he spoke because if you support Celtic I cannot see any way you would think of them as having anything of greatness about them.

Regardless I’m in the more JOY in heaven bowl and look forward to many helpings from that dish.

No doubt if Warbiola leaves it will be because of the terrible scenes yesterday!

Nobody blamed Leigh Griffiths for the pitch invasion yet?

  8. Two simple question.

What was the intent of the hibs fans coming on to the pitch at the end of the game. ?

“Our” media cow towing to them just feeds their superiority complex, the same media who have mocked and laughed at Hibs dismal SC record, watching the Hibs players get their medals and cup why were they then not allowed in the park for a lap of honour, the marauding Huns has left the stadium ?? Anyway time and time again the Huns show themselves up whether it’s Barcelona, Manchester or Glasgow….. Their Klub might have liquidated but the fans will always be the same, enjoy their pain and keep smiling … Well done the Hibees

The root cause of the trouble after yesterday’s Scottish Cup final has been quickly established by the SFA’s Crisis Liaison Group.

The invasion of the pitch by supporters of Hibernian FC caused the big screen facing The Rangers support to malfunction, and the message “Hibernian FC: Scottish Cup Champions” was displayed.

The SFA are relieved that The Rangers FC support acted with such restraint in the circumstances.

  24. Saint Stivs says SACK THE BOARD on

Rangers Record FC: Shameful Hampden scenes are a direct result of hateful stereotyping of our fans by jealous rivals

IBROX blogger Jonny reflects on the ugly scenes at the end of today’s Scottish Cup final, and reckons it shows just how deeply ingrained anti-Rangers hatred is in Scottish society.

Hibs fans invade the pitch at the final whistle after winning the Scottish Cup Final

THE bitter taste of cup final defeat after an abject performance has barely lingered, for after today’s game there are clearly much bigger fish to fry.

For the second time in 12 months Rangers fans have had to face down a horde of opposing fans invading the pitch and charging towards them in an aggressive and provocative manner.

The disgraceful behaviour of Motherwell fans was shrugged off by the SPFL and a mere slap on the wrists was delivered in a farce of a punishment that took over 6 months to deliver.

WATCH Hibs fans invade the pitch

    CLICK TO PLAY

The message was loud and clear: pitch invasions, provocation and fan unrest are mere minor issues.

Nothing to see here. If there’s a place to start apportioning blame for bloody knuckles and sore chins it’s a good start.

Of course, it’s hardly surprising that Rangers fans have now twice been on the receiving end of such provocation.

The sporting jealousy that always marked our smaller, less successful rivals has been replaced by an intellectually empty, sneering, faux moral superiority.

The relentless message, drilled by the veritable insane asylum of anonymous twitter obsessives and crusading ‘journalist’ bloggers has been to dehumanise the Rangers support, to label them as a collective of knuckle dragging half-wits with collective political, cultural and religious persuasion.

Some go as far to use the word ‘klan’.

You really could not make it up but sadly this relentless campaign has worked.

What other team would announce that players and staff had been assaulted by fans to a moon howl of derision demanding evidence of said assaults and whataboutery over alleged offensive singing?

While it’s beyond pathetic, with fans, staff and players now being put in physical danger, it’s beyond the joke.

It’s time to accept the facts, Rangers fans are the same as any other group. They have various opinions, ideologies, allegiances and standards of conduct. Some are idiots but most are good people, going about their lives and supporting the club they love.

    i

The stereotype I hear on social media is so far removed from the reality of attending Ibrox on a matchday as to become some sort of bizarre farce.

All of this is not to deny that some in our support let themselves and the club down today. Not everyone are angels that’s for sure.

The use of flares and smoke bombs are a dangerous development that will hold a special sense of dread for anyone old enough to remember the pictures from the Bradford fire.

Police horses enter the Fir Park pitch to stop more Motherwell fans from invading the pitchMotherwell were given a ‘slap on the wrist’ after ugly scenes at the play-off final

Others will talk about singing and the individuals that went onto the pitch but really, these infringements are minor in scale and danger compared to the Hibs invasion.

The SFA MUST act swiftly and with weight of purpose to ensure that Scottish Football is seen as safe.

Those who were involved in assaults should be held to account and the SFA must ensure that this matter is investigated fully. It is the only way to get the message across.

It simply cannot be seen to be the case that the powers that be in Scotland adopt an attitude of indifference towards the aggression of opposing fans toward Rangers supporters.

It’s becoming a pattern, and it’s one that must be stamped out.

If that were Celtic fans celebrating a cup victory yesterday our PLC would have been quicker than the ‘My Hat is Broken’ setting the narrative against it’s own support. And that narrative would be joyfully supported by many on here.

Great day for the Hibees and their fans. They had to win it at some point and I’m just delighted it was against the newest club in Scotland. Wee bit over exhuberance from the fans but that has been pent up for a long long time.

If and so far it is a big IF there was any attacks on zombies mascara ding as players then it should be condemned. I’ve yet to see any evidence. Although I do see plenty of Huns punching and kicking Hibees fans including what looks like an attempted kick by a zombie leader on a Hibs fan.

Sectarian singing (or is it a wonderful atmosphere) evident in abundance also. As well as a couple of those devices when used by Celtic supporters deliver a NATO response and alert in the media.
