‘We deserve better’ narcissistic nonsense

305

‘We deserve better’ is one of those phrases which sounds reasonable at first pass but does not stand up to scrutiny.

Fans deserve honesty, good governance and a safe environment to watch football, but do you think any team’s fans deserve on-field success?  No.  And if there is one club out there where this mantra holds true, they don’t train at Murray Park.

Football success is not a right, conferred by the aggregate number of season tickets bought, divisions played in, or successful campaigns to unseat investors completed.  You buy a ticket to be entertained and watch your football team.  This act does not come with an implicit understanding of what the outcome of any individual match will be, or an entire season’s undertakings.

It is narcissistic nonsense to think you deserve football success.

‘We deserve to watch our team win, lose and draw.’  This isn’t likely to replace ‘A club like no other’ on your season ticket, but it is the ultimate truism in football and we should all hear it occasionally.

‘We deserve frankness, in times of success and failure.’

‘We deserve to know there is no way to bridge the ‘gap’.’

‘We deserve to be told the old ways are gone forever and there is nothing anyone can do about it.’

‘We deserve to know if we put the club in the hands of a charlatan.’

‘We deserve to know that many of us will never see the league title go to Ibrox in our lifetime.’

You will never see these phrases on a bedspread at the gates to Murray Park, but the day will come when they are acknowledged truths.

  1. As a socialist I have some sympathy with the bedspread ‘rebels’. They are leaderless and deliberately so. The unionist working classes in Ireland and Scotland have been used, sold up the garden path and abandoned. Their public representatives and spokespeople are all Mable and unwilling to lead them out of their cup-de-sac. History will show that the game was up for them in 1997 both politically and for their favourite fitba club.

As a Celtic fan it’s funny to watch but it is genuinely tempered for me by watching them continue further in to the abyss of intolerance and bigotry as they search in vain for a way to their imagined glorious past. A past which gave them a few shillings more in the workplace than the sub strata of society below them at the time – a sub strata which as a result had to look to education and social cohesion as a way to progress themselves.

The penny will drop for most of them eventually but until it does the slide to fascism is inevitable for many. Something similar happened with the white English working class when the industrial bases were decimated, unions destroyed, the Labour Party abandoning them to cosy up with more affluent voters. I suppose this applied in Scotland too and accounts also for what we are seeing there in some groups. Like itvor not we need to be reaching out and trying to lift them out of their more, or at least leaving the gate open for them.

As for their team and club though, well, that’s just a handy metaphor for their real world demise. And it’s as funny as f……

While I agree with your sentiment, if we were to reach out a hand to them they would probably shit in it.

I’m amazed at the apparent lack of objective/critical thinking from their support.

The hero worship of King after his well documented tax fraud in SA is but one example.

They can’t all be that daft, can they?

It’s this kind of delusion on a much larger scale :)))

The time is right for a United Rangers of Glasgow FC, breakaway team. They could groundshare with Benburb or Saint Anthonys.

This is the line that screamed out at me.

I am all for accountability and transparency … but if they are to mean anything, those priinciples have to applied fairly and consistently, and not just with the zombies and/or the SFA, but also with our own club…. even if they lead to answers that we might not like…

So, when will Celtic disclose what role it played in the 5WA, LNS (the decision not to appeal), etc.,?

Your post re the state of the Fleg People is very true.

A friend of mine got to know Billy Hutchinson in the aftermath of the peace process ( long story but he was involved in community activism with deprived communities in Dublins inner city and ended up going to Belfast as part of a cross border initiative to coordinate with loyalist working class communities in Belfast)

Anyway leaving aside my own views on these odious creatures ( Hutchinson included) I remember a story he said that Hutchinson told him which just about sums up the delusion of these forgotten souls.

One day while on the Shankill Road Hutchinson was asked to settle an argument between 2 old men standing at a street corner. It went something like this

1st Old Boy to Billy “Youre an intelligent mon, tell him will ye”

2nd Old Boy to Billy ” He says we own Australia and I dont beleive him”

So there ye go…no bread no butter no tea no sugar but “they own australia”

If struggling for transport to the game to Paradise next Sunday, you can get a train from Balloch to Dalmarnock. About 10.35 from Balloch. I will be getting on that train at Dalmuir at 10.55. Many West Dunbartonshire Tims will be on board.

  10. The insistence that Murty merely got ‘the tactics wrong’ remains the rock they’re prepared to perish on.

Strange given the same SMSM squarely backed Graeme Murty before the k.o. including the live broadcasts where Kris Boyd on SKY especially, said he had to do something to stiffen the midfield, assuming he meant with fan(ny) Halliday.

It’ll be a cold day in hell when the bigot realises that Celtic have better players and no amount of Sevco on a level playing field will ever trouble Celtic in a one off, let alone in a sequence of 10.

Meanwhile SMSM move on to backing The Steel Men for one month, till a day in May.

Didn’t Celtic say it was a matter (LNS) for the Scottish Football authorities to revisited the decision in light of the Supreme Court ruling.

Not sure what we would have been appealing in the LNS decision when we clearly stated it was a matter for the SFA and Law courts.??

*had tae look that place up, its not actually in Alexandria but Jamestown beside St Kessogs Primary, an area in which I grew up.

I once asked about this club and was advised that after they leave on a Saturday they don’t normally get back hame until the Monday, and that’s home games lol, a wild club I’m led tae believe.

There’s also the Renton CSC which used tae leave fae the Dillichip Hotel which is in Bonhill, might be someone o here that can be of better assistance. I often travelled on it as a bhoy and later on when hame would go on it, very very good club, not that the Brigada isnae.
