Liam Scales is often judged against his central defensive partner, the impeccable Cameron Carter-Vickers. It is only when Cameron is out and we see Liam as the senior partner in defence that we get to appreciate the gap between him and those aspiring to replace him.
After around a year as first choice at Shamrock Rovers, Liam arrived in Glasgow three years ago and played a handful of games in his first season, before going on loan to Aberdeen.
Jim Goodwin took him there but was sacked after their historic Scottish Cup defeat at Darvel. That game was live on TV and we got to see Liam play right side of a back three; it is no wonder Goodwin didn’t make the cut. Barry Robson got the Aberdeen gig and came close to securing Liam on loan for another season, before an injury crisis at Celtic stopped the move going through.
The pivot which took place in Liam’s career late August 2023 was incredible. Liam was called into the team after Kilmarnock dumped us out of the League Cup for a home game against St Johnstone. Celtic were poor, St Johnstone took a point back to Perth with them, and Liam was repeatedly caught out by the ball over the top. One occasion late in the game almost produced a breakthrough for Saints.
We went to Ibrox the following weekend with some predicting a thrashing. With a weakened side, Celtic lost 3-0 there a few months earlier. It was not just Liam who would pivot that day, the whole of Scottish football did, but Liam was an absolute rock in defence.
He is never going to be Cameron Carter-Vickers, but when you see him alongside others, you know that Brendan will need to bring in an exceptional player to replace him. A month after scoring his first Champions League goal, he scored his first international goal for Ireland in a win in Finland last night.
We have developed a genuine player; credit to all involved.

I got 2 replacemet knees within months of one and other. Physio is brutal but i’ts YOUR (or your wives) knee, the more you do, the better it will be at the end.
Hated going to bed as you know the whole excerise regime starts before you even get out of bed. Best operations I ever had so (not speaking as an expert) but many thanks to the NHS in Dundee and Angus

Good afternoon from a rain soaked Trossachs, feel sorry for those beginning the school week holiday.
Wife asked if I want a strawberry gin cocktail 🍸 . How many measures did you put in it, two she said. Looking at the measure she mistakenly used the double, happy days 🙃
Prestonpans,
I brought a set of measures back from the UK,because Mrs TB always complaining I pour too much from the bottle.Very large measures, but she is happy now that I use it all the time.
I think Liam was always a good player. We put him on loan to Aberdeen for a season where he learned about the SPL and his opponents. I too noticed his upper body improvement and this could have happened at Celtic or Aberdeen. Generally, Centre backs need to be physically strong not just tall.
With regular top level appearances in Champions League and Internationals he will further improve with the experience. I hope we can hang on to him

Even the Borgia’s?.Vatican was a cesspit in the middle ages.Popes having kids by the dozen. The Reformation, brought about in part,by the corruption, emanating from the Vatican
*No argument from me here as a practicing, but NOT devout Catholic, I hasten to add, I can fully concur with what you say but Mattin Luther’s main fault was in trying to reduce the number of sacraments so he was excommunicated for trying to change canon law, however he did chastise his followers for ransacking Catholic Churches etc and went to his grave with a set of rosary beads wrapped around his fingers.
Infallible?.Aye right, And King Charles is Gods annointed !!!.
*Different scenario here, when Henry VIII wanted a successor and his wife at the time was barren he approached Pope Leo and asked for an annulment to allow him to marry a younger and more fertile woman pledging a sum of money as he was known at the time to give plenary indulgences as he attempted to build the Sistine Chapel, oul Leo turned him down, to which he come back with that he took money for permission to marry his late brother’s widow, again nae luck.
So, he was advised tae start his own church which he did, the outcome is we Scots suffered as his heir then was still the Virgin Queen, who had the rightful heir tae the throne, Mary Queen of Scots, beheaded, he was also advised to join with Martin Luther, but he so despised him for his role in bringing the one true holy and apostolic church down that he was awarded the title of “Defender of the Faith” which big ears still retains and could be found on our old coins.
It wasn’t until Pope Paul III came to the papal throne in an era following the sack of Rome in 1527 and rife with uncertainties in the Catholic Church as the Protestant Reformation progressed, his pontificate initiated the Catholic Reformation with the Council of Trent in 1545, he also recognized new Catholic religious orders and societies such as the Jesuits, the Barnabites, and the Congregation of the Oratory.
The Jesuits for instance were seen as an alternative to the Templars in that they were a teaching order as opposed to a warring one, as we all know they were founded by Ignatius of Loyola, a Spanish soldier turned priest, his first six students took vows of poverty and chastity and made plans to work for the conversion of muslims, now any of you out there who have ever been to Granada will understand this as the remnants of the muslim architecture is still there albeit Catholic Churches now, if travel to the Holy Land was not possible, they vowed to offer themselves to the Pope for apostolic work.
Sorry for the RK lessons there, but ut was my favourite subject in school.

Liam Scales deserves all the plaudits for his resurgence in the hoops
Out with his defensive improvements, one part of his game has gone unnoticed – his distribution from defence.
He is comfortable and confident on the ball, a long way from where he was with us at the start, and sets up a good many of our attacks.
His next milestone is to start scoring more goals from corners, which he has started to do.
spot on clunks
‘He is comfortable and confident on the ball,’
simple,
infuriates the ship out of me when he moves forwards and then stops – he’s well able to keep going and find a player with a pass. It’s like he’s listened to all the haters. must try and check out his pass stats.
Scales is passing it quicker this season, not getting caught on the ball as much, looking more confident now
Congratulations to young Greg Taylor on the announcement of his upcoming baby due March 2025
Now we all know where the injury came from……

*this was taught to us with a sense of pride in primary

On the contrary, at secondary it was very much that as the title was for the defense of the RC faith they didn’t deserve it.
What I have noticed about Liam lately is that he has developed a tendency to roll his (left) foot over a ball which is not moving at his feet. I have never quite understood the advantage of said move, is it akin to positioning the cue ball with your left hand, though righthanded, when you have been awarded a free ball in the snooker, and then rolling it over to gain some unseen advantage. Mmmm
Brendan and KT chatting tonight at the London CFC Foundation gig tonight
You think Brendan and KT aint been talking behind the scenes?
Maybe they been swapping dentists numbers as opposed to Celtic returns
But you bet they have not been out of contact
Anyone watching the Hungary v Netherlands tie? A free kick was awarded inside the area for the Netherlands about a yard nearer the goal from the penalty spot. A Hungarian defender touched the ball twice from a goal kick inside the area. Obviously, the whole Hungary team was on the goal line. It had to be hit high to have any chance of going in, but the Dutch player hit it low into a mass of legs and it was easily defended. A really unusual situation, though and very difficult to score from.

*didn’t Thommo do that at Anfield and slippy jumped over it for our first goal
Tontine Tim on 11th October 2024 9:41 pm
Aye, but I think it was from outside the area.
All Celtic players, and not just the unbreakable spirit of the utterly fantastic Liam Scales, who scored the best goal against the Huns EVER, when he played for the Dandy Dons, the players will have their statures greatly enhanced if before every game Celtic play in Europe and get BR to go through Matthew Kelly’s smokey door and announce –
“Tonight – I’m not going to be Brendan Rodgers.”
Might be worth a try?
PS, I hope Matthew Kelly is alright if he’s still alive.

Thanks to all for the shared memories of November 98. An amazing game and the start of their downfall as wee dick went berserk to ensure they won the league that season.
It was a great day and indeed ‘The Sweetest thing’ of all was that although they did win that season and the next they were already embarking on a path which would see them destroyed in 2012. A long slow painful agonising death began that day with the old dud Czech and his Swedish carthorse as they were portrayed for Celtic up against the rangers thoroughbreds.
As well as the U2 classic mentioned at full time we also heard the iconic ‘Perfect Day’ on a freezing cold night in Glasgows east end.
Great times. We have won 18 leagues out of 26 since that game. I doubt anyone would have believed that possible back then. 7 of their 8 were tainted by their EBT payments.
I think scales developed himself
BURNLEY; I was just musing over my cornflakes, that if WE have developed a player should there be a series of articles admitting WE ruined a player whenever a darling bud doesn’t blossom into a blooming maestro ?
I like to think Liam’s character and innate skills have been optimised by the whole Celtic environment, coaches and managers most importantly.
Quad
I don’t disagree but ultimately, like wee Greg, he has succeeded despite our support scapegoating and the managers ongoing intimation that we were lacking quality in these positions.

When I worked for a corporate I used to train the companies new and trainee valuers .
I performed this task for several years .
One new trainee every 3 months .
The ones who succeeded had natural ability ,but above all else a real desire to listen and improve.
The correct attitude was vital .
If they had those attributes, they were easy to train .
Scales appears to be one of those .
But Brendan and his staff are due some credit.
Especially Brendan .
He is the one that saw the potential in the Bhoy ,gave him his opportunity ,nurtured him ,and has stuck by him .
