Liam Scales is often judged against his central defensive partner, the impeccable Cameron Carter-Vickers. It is only when Cameron is out and we see Liam as the senior partner in defence that we get to appreciate the gap between him and those aspiring to replace him.
After around a year as first choice at Shamrock Rovers, Liam arrived in Glasgow three years ago and played a handful of games in his first season, before going on loan to Aberdeen.
Jim Goodwin took him there but was sacked after their historic Scottish Cup defeat at Darvel. That game was live on TV and we got to see Liam play right side of a back three; it is no wonder Goodwin didn’t make the cut. Barry Robson got the Aberdeen gig and came close to securing Liam on loan for another season, before an injury crisis at Celtic stopped the move going through.
The pivot which took place in Liam’s career late August 2023 was incredible. Liam was called into the team after Kilmarnock dumped us out of the League Cup for a home game against St Johnstone. Celtic were poor, St Johnstone took a point back to Perth with them, and Liam was repeatedly caught out by the ball over the top. One occasion late in the game almost produced a breakthrough for Saints.
We went to Ibrox the following weekend with some predicting a thrashing. With a weakened side, Celtic lost 3-0 there a few months earlier. It was not just Liam who would pivot that day, the whole of Scottish football did, but Liam was an absolute rock in defence.
He is never going to be Cameron Carter-Vickers, but when you see him alongside others, you know that Brendan will need to bring in an exceptional player to replace him. A month after scoring his first Champions League goal, he scored his first international goal for Ireland in a win in Finland last night.
We have developed a genuine player; credit to all involved.

We have three very talented Japanese players in Hatate, Maeda and Kyogo who have contributed greatly to our success during four seasons. Maeda seems the only semi-regular playing pick in the national team, but of course that is a matter for the Japan manager and could not/should not be influenced by Celtic. I remember supporters having similar concerns with Tom Rogic and his global trips with Australia. From a strictly(selfish) Celtic angle Alex Gordon has a point, but it is alas moot.
I don’t envisage Brendan and his new lieutenant Paul Tisdale recruiting from the far east market any time soon with Ange and Mark having moved on and taken their specialist knowledge with them; however I certainly hope to see H,M, & K doing what they do at Celtic for the next couple of years at least.

Ordinary Joe
After being lied to and manipulated by a corrupt and self interested government throughout the covid period and normal intelligent people allowing themselves to be taken in by these pretend experts like the Airdrie dentist clown it is no surprise to see little in the way of complaint from a compliant UK should this come to pass.
Sad to say but big pharma money manipulating media and government is more important than health to our elected reps.
I looked at the Line up for Norn Ireland who are currently drawing 0:0 with Belarus away. I thought they might be taking Loyalism a bit too far as I read that Prince Charles was in goal. Turns out his first name is Pierce.
Came out of mass tonight and seen Scotland lost again.
Brendan get slaughtered in the media but Clarke a good guy .
What’s the difference???
Very sad to see Alex Salmonds passing. I know a lot are piling in on him but I won’t be one.
In a world where loads of folk are just trying to be normal he really did try to be different. Ultimately set up by the establishment.
I also get that a few on the Celtic board viewed him differently for non footballing reasons.
I didn’t know him well but met him 4 or 5 times. He never let me down personally in fact the opposite whether I agreed politically or not with him he always kept his promises to me.
The only time my dear old dad (a very pro independence guy) ever told me I was doing well in my entire life was when he saw me on the news and in the Sun Newspaper with Alex Salmond as he came to visit our business.
As for the likes of Nick Robinson of the bbc I would maybe speak differently.
The Scottish political landscape will be poorer for not having him involved in my view. RIP.
Alex Salmond’s was a powerhouse in Scottish politics.Just look at the Tory,Labour,Liberals that have come after him.Lightweight, non electable, nobodies.Whichever way you voted,he was a fearsome opponent in debates.
RIP.
Ooofftt, what a knockout in the Boxing. Not nce to see back.
Big fight up next.Unmissable for me.
r.i.p alex.
hopefully his eventual legacy will be that we get out of this unionist westminster shit-show that promulgates wars, genocide and rip off services to fill the troughs of greedy cnts.
I never really warmed to the Scottish National Party, never voted for them either, though did vote for Independence, but fact is under the leadership of Alex Salmond they gave, a choice to those resident in Scotland, absent those Scots without, as to whether to become an Independent Nation (once again) or remain in a UK which was already on a path to choosing whether to stay or to leave the European Union. Ergo the SNP got its’ timing wrong, risked being exiled from the EU under the Lisbon Treaty, and ended up facilitating a General Election in December 2019 which Boris Johnson could not have achieved without their support for the early election bill a month or so earlier. That said I have more respect for Alex Salmond than I ever could for the son of the manse, Gordon Brown, an educated fool of the highest order, who surely could not have passed an SCE Ordinary Exam in Arithmetic, and who almost single handledy brought down the UK financial and economic system and who would have had it not been for the intervention of his then Chancellor the late Alistair Darling.
RIP Alex Salmond
Celtic Mac,
Curious on your thoughts on Gordon Brown. I’ve been dipping in and out of Robin Cook’s diaries and he speaks very highly if Brown.
In fact I’m sure he says he could be the best chancellor ever – lowest levels of child poverty being one of his markers if I remember correctly.
By the sounds of it Cook wasn’t a huge fan of Brown as a person but reading Cook’s knowledge of political history I thought it was interesting.

John Smith was buried on Iona. Think about that for a moment…
In modern terms he was the uncrowned King of Scotland
He, along with Robin Cook, Gordon Brown et al, and Tony Blair, laid the ground for the eventual defeat of the Tories in 1997. Brown as Chancellor created the structure which, less than ten years later, brought the UK to the edge of the financial and economic abyss, he gave independence to the Bank of England, (Nationalised by the Labour Government after 1945) he created the FSA, and he was the Chancellor, and as such in charge of the Treasury. He inherited a burgeoning economy from Kenneth Clarke and he reset and controlled the key macro-economic vehicles from 1997 onwards, all of which failed on or around 2007/2008. Not to mention his blind faith in Private Finance Initiatives (read offshore consortiums) which have crippled hospitals schools ever since they were introduced. No no no, Brown was and still is a fool, a dupe, and it has to be said a price for which we are all still paying.

I also wonder if many of the Celtic supporters would prefer the club back the way it was in 1992. Going by the abuse aimed at those who have been involved leading the club since then I do feel that maybe many were happier back in those days despite the trophy haul. Back in a time when we had little hope of ever winning anything twice in a row never mind dominating our largest rival domestically many seemed to feel more emotionally connected with the club. Maybe now ‘our day has come’ the world of Celtic is not as we expected. Maybe the moral of the story is ‘be careful what you wish for’.
B78 I think we have went over this before.Your wording is not right. You are mistaking dissent and enquiry for abuse. In 1992 those who were pro board just wanted,as they had done for years empower themselves by associating with the amateurism that was running Celtic then.
Those dissenting were met with silence, avoidance, self praise and self protection, and ultimately ignorance, but that was from the hangers on,the lockers, the cringing sycophants, the guarding wall of the Kelly’s and White, and within that wall we had the self destruction of the “pact” which put the interests of Kelly, white, smith et al above what Celtic was to millions of Celtic fans globally. Those daft bastids thought they knew best, they did not.
Them and the arse licking sycophants were found out by ordinary fans channelling their energies and digging into the accounts to show just how remote the then board were from reality.
It was the fans who shone a light,it was the fans who questioned,it was the fans who always want a better club, then as now the stumbling block was those who divert by claiming ‘abuse’its no such thing, explaining and use your own knowledge to quell the enquiry,it’s Celtic fans after all.one of the oddest sites I recall was the sycophants either absent or looking for a new home for their tongue! With Fergus there was work to be getting on with and he had no time for them and look around you at Celtic, what was done for the betterment of our club, board and fans.work that is always needing done
One Celtic.

I think the point I was making was that many do still seem to hanker for a less corporate and financially savvy Celtic than we have. The model folk thought they were getting with change was more ‘ broader fan ownership’ and the belief was it would give fans control and a say in things.
The reality was to get to a better place it needed the single minded Fergus with no ‘hangers on’ as you suggest. The reality also was that there was more spent than could be afforded early on and it lapsed into the control of the few very quickly. The few have continued to control and run it far better than our opponents. The balance of CT / JK and others to DD at least provides some counter. Not maybe prefect though as they wait for the big restructure to cash in perhaps.
Like Albania and Cuba and probably the Ossies in Germany and of course the black people of SA it sometimes feels the people are not as happy with the nirvana not being what they thought they were being promised. Which is correct.
I was in Jo’berg the night they won the World Cup in 95. The lady who cleaned our apartment proudly told me she would have a BMW next year. She was told she would have what the white man has. In reality she got a vote.

Salmond should have been in the jail.
————
If that was the case, then a goodly number of the SNP politburo , their Spads and favoured members of the Holyrood civil service should have joined him.
His message was not for me, neither was his style and delivery, but at least he had brain and was coherent, unlike almost all of those who came after.
A big figure in all respects.
Requiescat in pace Alex Salmond.

Celtic Mac,
Thanks for your response.
I should go back and read about Kenneth Clark’s role as chancellor then.
Is there anything in particular he did, or that I should read about that made him a success – what was the measure of that success?
Regarding PFIs – why were they such a bad deal. Surely if the government was to say we will give you a guaranteed return of x% over so many years, which is better than you’ll get from a bank, there would be people/funds willing to take that deal?

From the article An Tearmann references above:
” Already at certain clubs there is a clear preference for high-spending occasional fans over regulars.”
Are Celtic guilty of that?
( A question,; not an accusation.)

Oh no! There’s two of them….

Competitive.
If Hearts win a game in hand and Celtic win their two or draw 1, win 1 ?
Four teams at the top separated by two points.
If Scotland lose on Tuesday, I suspect there will be media handwringing with the standard clichéd rhetorical questions –
“Has X (in this case Steve Clarke) taken Scotland as far as he can”
“Is it time for a change”
Yawn.

Wouldn’t dwell too much on Ken Clarke the Chancellor, better still look to his father also Kenneth, who produced ‘Civilisation’ for the BBC back in 1969.
Economies tend to be cyclical, or can be, and can also be influenced by policy such as monetarism applied by Thatcher in the early 1980s. Suffice to say Clarke left Brown a positive economic situation in 1997.
Now Brown was not responsible for the Bank Of Scotland lending David Murray the millions to buy out Lawrence Malborough Rangers shares in late 1988, (or the million dollar bribe allegedly handed over in a New York hotel shortly before) or the continued borrowing by Rangers FC as was, which Alf Young flagged up in 1993-4, for which he was made persona non grata by the Ayrshire Rag’n’Bone Man (copyright Tontine Tim). But he was in charge of the Treasury when he recommended a Knighthood for Murray in 2007, the Charlatan of Charlotte Square, and failed to notice that both the Bank of Scotland and the Royal Bank were heading down the plughole, and with them MIH and Rangers FC, a football club which will be finally liquidated in ten days or so. As for PFI a financial instrument which keeps capital spending off the books and which transfers the total costs plus extortionate interest rates on to the actual school or hospital built by the consortium, over a period of 25-30 years or so and in so doing increasing said costs four or five fold. Brown changed his tune when it came to bailing out the Banks after the deluge, discovering a different more modern instrument called Quantitative Easing, a process explained if you will in Bank of England Quarterly Bulletin, 2014 Q1 / Vol 54 No.1 “money creation in the modern economy”. Read it and weep. Alex Salmond, a trained economist, weakened his own case for Independence when he stated that a future Scotland would continue to use Bank of England currency, (an IOU by any other name) instead of advocating the creation of our own currency issuing Central Bank, in a country that used to have four or five or more Banks which did so. See Professor Richard Murphy on Central Banks, currency and money creation.
A footnote to the Crash of 2007 onwards could not fail to mention the link between Celtic FC and the Dunfermline Building Society within which Celtic supporters were encouraged to open accounts with said Society shortly before it too went down the plughole, and subsequently becoming part of the Nationwide. You wont hear much of that promotion now. Funny that….
Re the Scottish Indy vote.
The vote should have been given to all members of the Union, not Scotland alone. After all, they are all in it are they not.
The outcome would have been different too I think.
KINGLuBO
KINGLUBO @ 2:56 PM,
As Scots living in England it seemed unfair we were not allowed a say in our Countries future.
However it is understandable that the citizens of a Country get that right, irrespective of where they were born.
The vast majority of Scots in England wanted the Union anyway so that’s why Alex Salmond was fine with the vote being folk living in Scotland only.
May he R.I.P.

If we were to pick our Greatest Ever Celtic team from, say, the 60`s until the present, which players do we think would feature in EVERY selection?
I would go for:
