We have developed a genuine player

Liam Scales is often judged against his central defensive partner, the impeccable Cameron Carter-Vickers.  It is only when Cameron is out and we see Liam as the senior partner in defence that we get to appreciate the gap between him and those aspiring to replace him.

After around a year as first choice at Shamrock Rovers, Liam arrived in Glasgow three years ago and played a handful of games in his first season, before going on loan to Aberdeen.

Jim Goodwin took him there but was sacked after their historic Scottish Cup defeat at Darvel.  That game was live on TV and we got to see Liam play right side of a back three; it is no wonder Goodwin didn’t make the cut.  Barry Robson got the Aberdeen gig and came close to securing Liam on loan for another season, before an injury crisis at Celtic stopped the move going through.

The pivot which took place in Liam’s career late August 2023 was incredible.  Liam was called into the team after Kilmarnock dumped us out of the League Cup for a home game against St Johnstone.  Celtic were poor, St Johnstone took a point back to Perth with them, and Liam was repeatedly caught out by the ball over the top.  One occasion late in the game almost produced a breakthrough for Saints.

We went to Ibrox the following weekend with some predicting a thrashing.  With a weakened side, Celtic lost 3-0 there a few months earlier.  It was not just Liam who would pivot that day, the whole of Scottish football did, but Liam was an absolute rock in defence.

He is never going to be Cameron Carter-Vickers, but when you see him alongside others, you know that Brendan will need to bring in an exceptional player to replace him.  A month after scoring his first Champions League goal, he scored his first international goal for Ireland in a win in Finland last night.

We have developed a genuine player; credit to all involved.

  1. Meant of course to refer to his namesake Kenneth Clarke of ‘Civilisation’ fame, not his old man. The former was of Scottish descent, though he was himself born in London.

Middle name Mackenzie, clue in there somewhere.

Can’t remember the year, but I attended the John Smith Memorial Debate at the GUU.

A team of Alex Salmond, Menzies Campbell and Charles Kennedy were up against a GUU team who had just won the world debating championships.

Needless to say it was men against boys and the professional debaters (politicians) blew away the students.

Their oratory, confidence and ability to think on their feet were impressive to behold.

Since those days I’ve become ever more bemused by the blurring of politics and media/showbiz and how the participants in those spheres move seamlessly between the two.

When you think about it, both are about “coming across well”, which is something that can be learned.

I never voted for him or his party, but Alex Salmond came across exceptionally well. He was one of the best.

Unfortunately people have to realise there has to be more to the people who govern us than simply “coming across well”.

    May he rest in peace.

If he was called [ Kenny O’Dalglish ] then far better and less board ass licking books would have been well milked especially by those fans who need an idol to worship.

Salmond should have been in the jail

Why? He was found not guilty on all charges.

You’re just annoyed because you weren’t first on CQN with the news of Salmond’s death. I know you trawl Newsnow just to be first with every bit of gossip.

    You’re CQN’s version of Isa.

    PEOPLE HUV TAE KNOW!

When your own defence lawyer says after the trial that he could be seen as “a sex pest but he’s not charged with that”, your Not Guilty verdict becomes a wee bit suspect.

Now, I am quite prepared to believe there were anti-independence political forces at work, especially over the financial misdemeanours of the SNP, which were pretty low-rent compared to Westminster financial corruption, but Alex Salmond, top political operative that he was, was also a bit…. er …. handsy.

  9. garygillespieshamstring on

I think Kenny Dalglish was the most complete footballer I saw in a Celtic jersey.

I would have loved to have seen Lubo in his prime playing for Celtic.

  10. Kelleher mistake in injury time takes gloss off a very good second half performance by Éire. FT: Greece 2 Éire 0. Scales played well.

  11. SFTB,

No splitting hairs. Not Guilty cannot be argued with.

As for people being a bit” Handsy”.The way things are in society, you dont have to do much now to be frowned at.An arm round some bodies shoulder enough to get you charged. Not having that, sorry.

If we were to pick our Greatest Ever Celtic team from, say, the 60`s until the present, which players do we think would feature in EVERY selection?

    I would go for:

    McGrain, Murdoch, Johnstone and Larson.

    Hot Smoked,

Agree totally, with the addition of course of King Kenny.

Was sent a GOBSMACKING email tonight!

Scotland failed to qualify for a World Cup between 1958 and the 1974 World Cups. Did the SFA never think to just play the Lisbon Lions? Well, no, not really.

    Simpson 5 caps

    Craig 1 McNeil 29 Clark 4 Gemmell 18

    Murdoch 12 Auld 3

    Johnstone 23 Wallace 7 Chalmers 5 Lennox 10

No wonder many on here say “FTSFA”

    Emeraldbee- yes indeed.

Incredible stats for the Lisbon Lions caps.

The one that sticks out in particular for me?

    Bobby Murdoch

    12 caps.

“Not Guilty cannot be argued with.”

    —————————–

I agree – the verdict was Not Guilty and he’s clean in the eyes of the Law but…….

It wasn’t political opponents who levelled the charges; it was personnel from his own party and selected advisers who testified to his habits and, as I said, it was public comment by his own defence lawyer that adds evidence to the fact that he was a minor sex pest. So was Bill Clinton and he was an accomplished political operator too.

Some political sex pests were less effective politicians.

  15. B2B

I actually find it hard to pick out one that doesn’t astound me. Maybe ‘Faither’, ok, but after that which one shouldn’t have walked into the Scotland team? Bobby Murdoch?? Good God, who kept him out of the team? Greig the Clugger?

    WE KNOW WHY!

    Ave Ave

  16. And as usual SFTB will be all Ponsonbyish and only half tell you about the not guilty verdict.

Found not guilty by a majority of women jury as well.

But, but, but, why no mention of big honest baldy John [ current misleader ] who hid most of the evidence from Holyrood’s Salmond Inquiry which would have majorly implicated krankie and the Eastern Star witches coven and their jail worthy criminality?

Still waiting for big pretentious BP fea STV reporting on that sleight of hand sleekitry.

PS, I judge AS by his over 20+ times re-rigging tv interview schedules so that AS would never have to be grilled on tv election panels by Mr George Galloway who would have interviewed both AS and the lazy journalist with hugely embarrassing questions which no lazy journalist would be allowed to ask and this would teach the brainwashed studio audience and tv viewers how to not just rattle the cage, but burn the fake media studio down.

Do you see a pattern? Do you have an explanation for ignoring putting the highest calibre players into the Scotland team? And Peter Cormac was a great player, agreed!!

Mucho nonsense to come before then.

I reckon we will get back to Celtic talk and leave much of the kack talk behind around 5.34pm on Friday

I agree the lions should have been given the ultimate accolade and be picked for the next Scottish international.

Let’s be honest tho, many of the knuckles up at Park Gardens at the time would not want that permanent and just accolade on Scotland best ever football side, their works team especially!!

Now after 2012 the linguistic gymnastics shall only get better after they were “pit doon””relegateed” or “demoteed” all to excuse the Knight carving them up from the inside.
