Last night’s France-Spain game will surely be marked as one of the most influential friendlies in history. A Fifa sanctioned trial of video refereeing saw a goal for the hosts by Griezmann ruled offside by the video ref, while Spain’s second goal, scored by Deulofeu, was incorrectly flagged by the assistant as offside, only to be ruled a goal after a 40-second consultation with the video ref.
Watching it happen was a lightbulb moment. It’s this easy to get difficult decisions right?
We can moan endlessly about the standard of refereeing in Scotland – and pretty much every other country does the same, but we saw the future last night. Video technology has been used in rugby for years and will soon be an everyday part of football.
The video ref turned what would have been a 1-1 draw into a 0-2 win for Spain, correctly reflecting the goals scored. It’s hard to think of anything that could benefit the game as much. Generations of Celtic fans have dreamed of such oversight and accountability in refereeing.
If only we could have it for Hampden in the semi-final………

how often the pundits dont know the rules, and are allowed just to give an opinion in an attempt at justification if what annoys me more than anything.

In Scotland we’ll need to be careful that the ref watching the video is not doing so from them comfort of his local lodge.

Are we going to see ( or hear ) officials ‘mic’d up’ along with the introduction of video replays ? works well for the egg-chasers.
Seeing how they already have their own wee closed channel to make sure they all see – or don’t see – the same penalty/handball/assault, it should be very easy to transmit and share.
Now that would be a channel worth getting access to on the old Kodi thingy ;-)

Seriously, at my age I will probably not see too much difference in everyday living ? However, it’s the younger generation I feel sorry for.
I vividly remember the day after Thatcher was elected as PM in 1979, and being in the pub with my mates. We watched as young school kids walked by the open pub doors, fearing for their futures as well as or own ( I was about 24 then), Little did we know that we were in for 18 years of Tory misrule and misery for working class folk !
I watched The BBC today with the signing of Article 50 etc. Those Brexiters have got us in a right old mess, and it’s gonna get worse for years to come imo.
The first hurdle is that The EU want ” The Divorce Payment….£52 billion up front ” ? , BEFORE they sit down for talks with Britain !
Funny how none of the Brexiters told us of the “Divorce Payment” during their campaign for leave ? As for The NHS receiving £350 million each and every week…..Don’t hold your breath, as many of you will be aware, the Brexiters have been backtracking on that for months now, and were at it again today in Parliament when questioned about it.
Of course Barmy Boris and his cronies found it all so amusing.
Anyway, rant over……………but IF we don’t beat the Huns twice more this season, I’m still blaming feckin Brexit !
