We have seen the future

Last night’s France-Spain game will surely be marked as one of the most influential friendlies in history. A Fifa sanctioned trial of video refereeing saw a goal for the hosts by Griezmann ruled offside by the video ref, while Spain’s second goal, scored by Deulofeu, was incorrectly flagged by the assistant as offside, only to be ruled a goal after a 40-second consultation with the video ref.

Watching it happen was a lightbulb moment. It’s this easy to get difficult decisions right?

We can moan endlessly about the standard of refereeing in Scotland – and pretty much every other country does the same, but we saw the future last night. Video technology has been used in rugby for years and will soon be an everyday part of football.

The video ref turned what would have been a 1-1 draw into a 0-2 win for Spain, correctly reflecting the goals scored. It’s hard to think of anything that could benefit the game as much. Generations of Celtic fans have dreamed of such oversight and accountability in refereeing.

If only we could have it for Hampden in the semi-final………

Video reffing will work in most other countries but probably not here. Whenever a Dallas inspired, SFA sanctioned, DOB flags a good Celtic goal offside or fails to award us a stonewall penalty or fails to red card an opponent for a red card tackle, the dallas inspired, SFA sanctioned DOB reviewing the video will simply back him up. What could be fairer than that?-))

I’ve been asked to post the following by CQN’er Gerry Devlin so here goes…

I’m not good at all with linking things computer wise and taking liberties here but if you could help I would be most grateful. Could you please post the following on CQN for me on behalf of my upstairs neighbour?

    60/60 This guys nuts.

Bhoys and Ghirls of all ages at the bottom of this begging letter is the address of my upstairs neighbour Martyn who is attempting to visit 60 football grounds in 60 hours. I knew nothing of this untill yestrrday PM.

Martyn is raising money with his mate Mark for the Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice where their Mums passed away.

I’m the only Tim in Staines that’s worn our colours for 53 years and I told Martyn that we were pretty good at this sort of stuff.

Martyn is a Luton Town supporter and his pal a Fulham one.(thanks for Moussa !)

Please be generous and kind it’s what Celtic supporters do.

    Here is Martyns link

Martyn leaves Staines at 12 noon today heading for Swansea.

    Good luck Martyn.

    —————————————————————————————————-

Spent an hour looking for Martyn to see him off, resplendant in my {too tight) hoops to show Gerry he isn’t the only hoop in the village.

As I didn’t know where he was setting off from I checked –

    Staines town F C no sign…..

    Rail station, no sign….

So I gave up and went to join a gym in the hope my hoops top will be more figure friendly soon.

Fatbhoys, watch yer back I’ll be rejoining the race and coming up on the outside soon….

  9. Can we run a sweep on which Scottish club will vigorously oppose video refereeing? Hmmmm it’s a tough one to call.

I’m gonnae buy shares in a lenscap company.

  10. Guys,

My son has a ticket for the Hertz game. As his CSC bus isn’t running he is getting the train from Queen St. Will bevvy be allowed on these journeys? I don’t think so but he reckons it’s OK.

Also, any views on whether he would be safe to walk from Haymarket to Tynecastle?

    Cheers

  11. Looks like some of the wee Teddies are beginning to see the bigger picture. They’d better watch their collective backs, coming out with stuff like this – you’d think they had some sense!

Here’s a wee snippet from the Lying King being quoted by the writer:

” “We are happy to consider 50% debt at a market rate and 50% equity at 20p per share. The debt will be for a minimum of 5 years. The debt should be secured against Ibrox and Murray Park with some flexibility for future funding if required. We will ensure that the fan groups support the security over Ibrox and do not task the board with a breach of prior commitments.”

Read over that again and let it sink in. Mr King saying he wants Ibrox and Murray Park as security whilst giving assurances to the board he has the fan groups support in doing so. “

Would a Video ref give a last minute penalty like the Griffs one, of course not, he would act like that clown Thomson did on Sportscene and laugh at the ridiculous claim.

  14. I’ve just got roped into a family Holiday in Lanzarote which entails flying home on Sunday 23rd April, flight leaving at 11.20 am.

Not alone will I miss the entire Hun game but I’ll be sitting there for an hour & a half or so after the game has ended before I find out what has happened.

There was no bloody way out of it & no way I could have changed the flight back. I’m sitting here feeling really pissed off.

Corky with a bit of luck your flight will be delayed for 5 hours, watch game on computer then claim compo when you get home..win..win .hh

  17. Vogue, As long as we win the game, I’ll get over it, but if the unthinkable happens I’ll torment myself with the thought “If I was watching, that wouldn’t have happened”.

When I’m watching on the telly, if we need a goal and it’s not coming, I have been known to change seats to get the Bhoys to buck up their performance.

You’ll not be allowed alcohol on the Train. However, there are ways and means. Last time we went to Aberdeen we had to park our cargo in left luggage, didn’t want to waste it by giving it to the Cops.

I would not be surprised if Cops don’t travel on the Trains.

    Keep the Faith!

Sorry I have been very busy with other stuff and so have not been able to post much or to reply to numerous e-mails about Lisbon, the stadium visit and the meal on the 24th.

I also have some travel arrangements to make for some folk and will look into this aspect between now and the weekend.

However, I won’t be able to respond to loads of individual e-mails until after Tuesday of next week. What I can say is that I have received loads of payments for the meal and I will acknowledge each one next week.

Myself and others are also trying to organise a gig/party for between 1,000 and 1,500 on the night of the 25th of May and discussions are under way with a venue which we have been told will be available.

We are also looking at a commemorative mass on the morning of the 25th of May and will hopefully be able to provide details on that soon enough.

I have also made arrangements for a pre trip fundraiser for charity in The Admiral Bar on the evening of the 18th of May and I am hoping that we will have some players present, some music and some other entertainment on the night.

More details on this to follow but it will be after Tuesday — and hopefully by that time we will be Champions of Scotland.

Lastly, I am looking at undertaking and launching a charity project in the name of Celtic fans from all over which will last a full year going well into 2018 and hopefully I will have this up and running within the next couple of weeks.

I also have a bottle of ACGR’s amber nectar to raffle along with a truly astonishing bottle of the very best five times distilled Vodka!

But first I need a cup of tea and possibly a lie down!!

Taking a cargo is giving them every opportunity to lift your bhoy. I’m sure they will also manage to dig something of the OBaF to do him with as well

    A dry journey is advised.
