We have seen the future

Last night’s France-Spain game will surely be marked as one of the most influential friendlies in history. A Fifa sanctioned trial of video refereeing saw a goal for the hosts by Griezmann ruled offside by the video ref, while Spain’s second goal, scored by Deulofeu, was incorrectly flagged by the assistant as offside, only to be ruled a goal after a 40-second consultation with the video ref.

Watching it happen was a lightbulb moment. It’s this easy to get difficult decisions right?

We can moan endlessly about the standard of refereeing in Scotland – and pretty much every other country does the same, but we saw the future last night. Video technology has been used in rugby for years and will soon be an everyday part of football.

The video ref turned what would have been a 1-1 draw into a 0-2 win for Spain, correctly reflecting the goals scored. It’s hard to think of anything that could benefit the game as much. Generations of Celtic fans have dreamed of such oversight and accountability in refereeing.

If only we could have it for Hampden in the semi-final………

With my usual lack of timing I will be in Lisbon the week before your own circus arrives in town.

However, if you have a contact at the stadium I could use to facilitate my own pilgrimage, that would be very helpful.

My own lhad was there earlier on in the year but with the fecklessness of youth never bothered to get a name I could use.

I can be found on Twitter or CQN will have my e mail.

    Cheers

  2. Good evening friends.

Just 48 hours till 2 big events kick off – Dundee v Aberdeen (hope the Dandies keep well ahead in 2nd place) and, of course, Goals For Shay 2. Whilst that game is the first fixture of the new competition we are still accepting entries right up until Noon on Saturday. And no, you can’t wait till Saturday and then choose 4-goal Aberdeen!

We are now only 7 entrants short of equalling the fantastic response we had for the first competition. So help us on our journey as we are Going for 118!

Imagine joining a clique where one of the members could walk away with at least £500. Let’s be ‘avvin ya!

We all set out from Glasgow town, from London and from County Down

Cork, New York and Dublin from Boston and Chicago

We all got on the aeroplanes and all Italia’s greatest names

Landed up in Portugal to take on Glasgow Celtic

Everything was going to plan, when Glasgow Celtic beat Inter Milan.

It being on the 25th of May, the kids all had a holiday

The sun was shining down and all the windows they were open

Some listened on the radio some watched the famous TV show

Everyone was praying we’d be champions of Europe

We sang throughout the land, when Glasgow Celtic beat Inter Milan.

Celtic went out to attack, but soon got caught out at the back

Up stepped big Mazzola to slot away a penalty

Celtic rallied to the call but Sarti coped well with the ball

And Inter were so fortunate to be one up at half time

They said catch us if you can when Glasgow Celtic beat Inter Milan.

The second half got under way, the Celts put on a great display

Of attacking football that made Inter run for cover

Gemmell brought us level and the cup was surely settled

When a shot from Bobby Murdoch was deflected in by Chalmers

Now the score line read two wan, when Glasgow Celtic beat Inter Milan.

We all went out to celebrate, the bus came down the Gallowgate

Then on to Celtic Park to hail a lorry load of heroes

The European Cup displayed, the Celts they gave a victory wave

And everyone was singing we’re the champions of Europe

And Jock Stein is the man, when Glasgow Celtic beat Inter Milan.

When Glasgow Celtic Beat Inter Milan

When Glasgow Celtic Beat Inter Milan

    Two Wan! (2-1)

Just been partaking in rather nice Pig and Goat, roasted on an open spit barby, neighbour is getting ready for a big weekend bash, funny how they have a trial run :-)

It…. they were delish, his Mrs had heaps of home grown salady stuff to go with it, too warm for the vino so a few cold beers had to suffice.

Nay sauces, just good old plain peasant food :-)

I was at the stadium a couple of years ago and just walked around to the large building at the end of the stadium. The security guard was well versed in dealing with Celtic fans wanting to visit. If you cannot get a contact name you should still be able to access the stadium without any problems.

  6. TET

I envy your being able to roast like that. Bit tricky in Lanarkshire plus my good lady is not a BBQ fan. I have enjoyed goat in Lebanese restaurants , not a big fan of the hog roast but in fairness only ever had it at big events when proper care was not taken.

IMO , for what it is worth, well prepared and cooked meat with fresh salad is Ambrosia. I have learned , through mistakes, that cooking is like everything else in life. Prepare well, be patient , accept failure as a lesson and you will get there in the end. HH

If I donate another 20 quid, can I pick Sevco(every week. I dont even care about the prize money (not that there would be picking that shower) …

…. but I think the reaction from GFTB every week would be worth the 20 quid!

If not, I will get my picks in shortly.

I was there last summer. I just hung out at the railings looking longingly in to the pitch. Eventually a guy approached us, and showed us where to go. (It was to the fight of the railing looking on to the pitch, back out to the main road, and take the next street left.) By the time we got there, the chap that initially approached us, had told the security guard to let us in. They were all very helpful and friendly. He told us to take as long as we wanted, and get as many pics as we needed. The only thing was not to walk on the grass. I didn’t, but I couldn’t resist touching it. They are obviously well used to nutters from Scotland turning up, you will have no problem I am sure.

  10. JMCCORMICK

When I was there a few years ago with my sons the security guard at the administrative building, which is about 50 yards along from the main entrance to the stadium, showed us in. There’s a path at the top of the admin building car park that leads straight through and into the stadium. Spent about an hour wandering all over the pitch, up the stand to where Big Billy got the cup and down the tunnel.

Have the media sold Danny Mc.Grain and John Clark yet?

If you read Newsnow, they are about the only two at Celtic Park that are not on someone’s radar.

  12. I see Phil’s serious professional is allowing their new coach to pick the DoF, talk about hanging yourself out to dry, then a young guy who is up to Millers shoulders is being linked with a move to the premier league , no club mentioned mind, utter s…e , a feelgood story to reassure as was the backdrop of the dead clubs stolen trophies.

  13. Dessybhoy

The club is supposed to be Chelsea, agreed it’s pish, and I also heard the boy is a mad Celtic fan, no idea if that is true, but it wouldn’t surprise me.

Re alcohol on train (Scotrail) , if travelling between 21.00 and 10.00 then its a no but outwith these hours then perfectly acceptable. A group of us travelled from Fife to Edinburgh for the 3 home rugby internationals recently and scooped away on each occasion.

    ‘Twas always thus.

Even in the days when the Originals had good players, none was ever touted for a move, even though clubs held registrations, even after a contract expired.

They decided who would leave and when….usually when they were over the Clint or had dirtied their bib, like Baxter.

Never a whisper of discontent from Govan, but every time someone passed wind at Parkhead, the rumours would start.

  16. Thom

Yip, a fart at Parkhead and by the time it reached the city center it was thunder and lightning :-)

I honestly don’t know why they bother, even the halfwits know they write total pish, at least they should do.

They are strangling themselfs by the day, even the huns don’t but then any more, but the world is full of ejits who do, as you have always said, they still are the ones with the megaphone, so they still have the clout, the interweb is still a long, long way away i’m afraid.

    TET,

They continue to drip negative Celtic stuff and those who lack our insight and stoicism get worn down by the constant stream of us bad, them good.

Thank God we have a well run club, run by men and women who have Celtic’s best interest at heart.

There, but for the Grace, etc.

  18. Thom

Why do those who run the club then allow the negative pish, they could nip it in the bud if they so wished…..

Is there an ulterior motive we don’t know about ?

This has always intrigued me and I admit I don’t have a feckin scooby as to why the suits allow it.

Possibly due to the “megaphone syndrome” and maybe we adopt the ba’ in the back of the net option.

They would love us to start whinging.

That would give them months of copy.

Positive media coverage lead Them into the abyss.

  20. ‘Deep into stoppage time the game erupted when Ross Forbes’ replacement Oyenuga clattered Jordan Forster right in front of the home dugout.

McGregor was quick to let Oyenuga know what he thought of the challenge with Lennon also making his point.

A melee ensued and, after consulting with his assistant referee, Walsh quickly showed red to Oyenuga and McGregor and then dismissed the managers.

It was a frantic end to what was an otherwise calm and quiet affair as the sides had to settle for a point apiece.’
