We have seen the future

256

Last night’s France-Spain game will surely be marked as one of the most influential friendlies in history. A Fifa sanctioned trial of video refereeing saw a goal for the hosts by Griezmann ruled offside by the video ref, while Spain’s second goal, scored by Deulofeu, was incorrectly flagged by the assistant as offside, only to be ruled a goal after a 40-second consultation with the video ref.

Watching it happen was a lightbulb moment. It’s this easy to get difficult decisions right?

We can moan endlessly about the standard of refereeing in Scotland – and pretty much every other country does the same, but we saw the future last night. Video technology has been used in rugby for years and will soon be an everyday part of football.

The video ref turned what would have been a 1-1 draw into a 0-2 win for Spain, correctly reflecting the goals scored. It’s hard to think of anything that could benefit the game as much. Generations of Celtic fans have dreamed of such oversight and accountability in refereeing.

If only we could have it for Hampden in the semi-final………

I was just wondering if anyone had seen or heard how the young Norwegian is doing in his loan spell at Kilmarnock.

He looked a good prospect when he made a couple of appearances pre season.

I’d like to know if he is getting regular games at Killie and how he is coping with SPFL football.

I saw him as a future lynchpin in our defence with the potential and versatility to step into midfield.

This Brexit will keep our politicians busy for a few years, which means the economy will run more smoothly in the background….

Apart from their failure to police it, I don’t think the politicians were responsible for the sub-prime crisis.

As is usual before a world wide crash, and will become the norm again shortly after everyone forgets about the causes, the banks will be deregulated and free from government interference (China & Russia excepted).

  18. So suddenly it’s people who respect the results of referenda who are ‘undemocratic’.

Must be a generational thing. (that’s only 4 years in Scotland, mind!).

  19. Here is a piece on Clintons contribution to creating the conditions for the sub prime crisis..

President Clinton’s tenure was characterized by economic prosperity and financial deregulation, which in many ways set the stage for the excesses of recent years. Among his biggest strokes of free-wheeling capitalism was the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act, which repealed the Glass-Steagall Act, a cornerstone of Depression-era regulation. He also signed the Commodity Futures Modernization Act, which exempted credit-default swaps from regulation. In 1995 Clinton loosened housing rules by rewriting the Community Reinvestment Act, which put added pressure on banks to lend in low-income neighborhoods. It is the subject of heated political and scholarly debate whether any of these moves are to blame for our troubles, but they certainly played a role in creating a permissive lending environment.
