We have seen the future

Last night’s France-Spain game will surely be marked as one of the most influential friendlies in history. A Fifa sanctioned trial of video refereeing saw a goal for the hosts by Griezmann ruled offside by the video ref, while Spain’s second goal, scored by Deulofeu, was incorrectly flagged by the assistant as offside, only to be ruled a goal after a 40-second consultation with the video ref.

Watching it happen was a lightbulb moment. It’s this easy to get difficult decisions right?

We can moan endlessly about the standard of refereeing in Scotland – and pretty much every other country does the same, but we saw the future last night. Video technology has been used in rugby for years and will soon be an everyday part of football.

The video ref turned what would have been a 1-1 draw into a 0-2 win for Spain, correctly reflecting the goals scored. It’s hard to think of anything that could benefit the game as much. Generations of Celtic fans have dreamed of such oversight and accountability in refereeing.

If only we could have it for Hampden in the semi-final………
