We hired a builder

When looking for a new manager, Celtic usually try to fix the biggest shortcoming the previous guy had.  In May 2019, Neil Lennon’s biggest asset was his “eye for a player”.  There were other attributes. he twice got Celtic into the Champions League group stage where he delivered some of the most memorable nights in our European history, but Celtic’s decline started with his predecessor’s inability to sign quality players after the arrival of Scott Sinclair.

When it fall apart last season, Neil seemed unable to imagine how to organise a squad that was performing significantly below the sum of its individual parts.  Apparently simple tasks, like how to organise at defensive set pieces.  The answer to that particular question was Eddie Howe.

Howe took a team of lowly £17m misfits and marshalled them into a very solid unit.  He also had other attributes, but that ability to defend a corner kick was very convincing.

I spoke to Peter Lawwell soon after Brendan Rodgers left and again after Neil Lennon’s departure.  Neither Neil nor Eddie fitted the bill he was initially looking at.  On this occasion, Ange Postecoglou fits perfectly.  Technically proficient, capable of withstanding the intensity of our game, with an ability to make us a far better team three years out than we were when he took over.

It’s that last attribute we recruited yesterday.  Neil and Brendan both left teams that were poorer than two years previous.  We hired a builder.

  1. I’ll be supporting Croatia today, and Scotland tomorrow and Friday, hate is a strong word but thinking about it I’m conflicted, as I hate the corrupt, bigoted SFA more than the Engurland team…..

Also accept people for who they are like the several ex Celtic players who come from England.

    Weird huh ?

  2. Some of the streets around these parts have went all Saltire and Lion Rampant daft, decorating the lamposts and their windows with loads of flags and bunting. Expensive houses with young families, I often wonder how they pay for all the goodies in their life, however, I then think about them not being old enough to have experienced a tournament and I hope it goes well enough for them to enjoy.

Meanwhile in one street, a very noticeable staunch type fella has a Jack up a flagpole and is watering his garden wearing a black t-shirt with the 6 counties overlayed with the union flag and in small letter’s Ulster is British.

Always the highlight of any tournament is when England get knocked out, preferably on holiday abroad. You get the astonished look on their faces when you say you want them knocked out😂

They look glum and miserable, but I think that’s because back then with early cameras needing long exposures the subjects had to hold the same expression for a long time and it was easier to do so with a poker face than a smiley, happy face.

Apologies if i have mentioned this before. On the subject of biased commentators i remember watching France v Eng in the euro 2004.the insufferable Clive Tyldsley is commentating,England are 1-0 and the brass bands are in full pelt.Jacques Santini is the French manager and has agreed to join spurs after the tournament..the england are givin santini tight un the dugout and the arsethat us Tyldsley proclaims..” welcome to a little of bit of England Mr Santini!!”..nearly put my boot thru the telly..anyway one of my all time fav players had final say in last few mins.Zidane came to the rescue with 2 goals in last 5 mins to totally clamp that twat up.

    DREW1967,

In 2004 I was in Las Vegas at the Celtic Convention in the Riviera Hotel,

A group of us went to watch this game at a “British Pub” on the outskirts of Vegas, decked out in our Celtic gear we received a somewhat frosty reception from a load of Engurland types, led off by a Glesga Hun funnily enough, and he was giving it big when England were 1-0 up,King Billy tattoos on full display, last two minutes BEDLAAM!,

Green and White Hoops singing and dancing at one ed of the bar was just too much for them,a GIRL in her England top threw a half empty beer bottle at our crowd and started a riot!!

LVPD turned up and i dont think they had seen anything like it!!

Lawrenson was one of the worst pundits going.

    ………….

    I Agree 100%.

He is always trying to be ” Wide and Witty”, and comes away with SNIDE Comments.

He has also to ” Dress” like a 23 year old, by copying some styles that the much younger Players and Pundits tend to wear over the years. Hes as UGLY as Feck, Baldy…and was a very average Player, who just happened to play alongside many excellent footballers in the Liverpool and Irish set ups.

Try and listen to him when he starts ANY SENTENCE….its ALWAYS….” I think…I think…I think”, in that squeaky high pitched Tone !

That Hun Hateley when talking/Commentating always would start with ” ER UM…Er um…er um”….very annoying also.

  8. In England in 1966, they played ALL their games at HOME…Wembley.

Geoff Hurst was later to become ” Sir”….Knighted…for scoring TWO Goals !

Alf Ramsey was also Knighted….Jock Stein wasnt.

As for EURO’s this time around ” WHY are England being allowed to play ALL of their 3 Group games at Wembley ?

IF they progress, they will also play their further games at Wembley.

To be fair to the BBC, as a number of Danish players and various medics surrounded Eriksen on the ground, the only indication to me that CPR was being administered was when his legs started moving every second, an obvious sign that pressure was being applied to his upper body which was obscured by players and medics.

After a few seconds I could see a medic pushing down on the stricken player. So perhaps the BBC could be excused for broadcasting those moments as it may not have been immediately obvious what they were actually filming.

What was broadcast thereafter is a another story.

I was in Leeds, Blackpool and Morecambe last week on holiday. Told every Englishman that I met that I think that Scotland will pump England at Wembley and win our group. The arguments commenced, their arrogance is through the roof. Remind me of Glesga huns. Was nearly boxing with one prick in Blackpool, who had a Blackburn Rovers and EDL tattoo. Obese nae neck prick, who doesn’t realise how close he was to the kicking of his life.

    Mon Croatia!

You see any Celtic taps in England ?

I was in Kendal last week and spotted 2. Which was nice.

Back in 1991, I and my family were in Ibiza where I got to know a couple of cockney taxi drivers and their wives. Sitting by the pool one afternoon one of the Londoners, reading the Sun newspaper, said in a loud voice, “Ere Jock. There’s a 25th anniversary competition ere wot says you can win a day wiv the men who won the World Cup for England. You should go for it mate.”

    Cue much cockney laughter.

“No thanks pal,” I replied. “Why would I want to spend a day with a Russian referee and his linesmen?”

  14. Personally, don’t think he’s great. Organised a shower of shipe, yeah, got help from the refs.

I can’t imagine any circumstances in which there would be even the remotest likelihood where I want to spend my time on holiday with a pair of cockney taxi drivers and their wives.

“But if I may, fans did not perceive failure of certain individuals. It actually happened and we all witnessed it.”

    —————————-

I was referring specifically to the assistant coaches, particularly, John Kennedy.

I have been a main coach and an asst. and I know the difference. Whilst you contribute to the success of the team, as an asst., you are not responsible for the failures because you have input but no veto on final decisions which land firmly and exclusively on the Main Coach.

And, as for, John Kennedy’s interim period, if you detected no differences at all between him and NFL, I can’t have any confidence in your observations. But, ultimately, he was dead man walking interim coach, charged with finishing the season without further embarrassment and the squad had little but pride to play for.

Still, contrast his results in that short period with a similar amount of games at the start of Jock Stein’s career and tell me he was definitely a failure.

I suspect John Kennedy and James Forrest, the player, will not be fully appreciated until they go away and are successful elsewhere.

  21. Half time. Good early start by England, Croatia got a hold on the game from about 20 mins on but England finished the stronger.

I might be wrong, but I think the WC semi final played out similarly, England dominated first half but couldn’t handle Croatia at all in the second. Fingers crossed.
