When looking for a new manager, Celtic usually try to fix the biggest shortcoming the previous guy had. In May 2019, Neil Lennon’s biggest asset was his “eye for a player”. There were other attributes. he twice got Celtic into the Champions League group stage where he delivered some of the most memorable nights in our European history, but Celtic’s decline started with his predecessor’s inability to sign quality players after the arrival of Scott Sinclair.
When it fall apart last season, Neil seemed unable to imagine how to organise a squad that was performing significantly below the sum of its individual parts. Apparently simple tasks, like how to organise at defensive set pieces. The answer to that particular question was Eddie Howe.
Howe took a team of lowly £17m misfits and marshalled them into a very solid unit. He also had other attributes, but that ability to defend a corner kick was very convincing.
I spoke to Peter Lawwell soon after Brendan Rodgers left and again after Neil Lennon’s departure. Neither Neil nor Eddie fitted the bill he was initially looking at. On this occasion, Ange Postecoglou fits perfectly. Technically proficient, capable of withstanding the intensity of our game, with an ability to make us a far better team three years out than we were when he took over.
It’s that last attribute we recruited yesterday. Neil and Brendan both left teams that were poorer than two years previous. We hired a builder.

If we fail to win the league next season or make significant progress then surely he would not last?
Having read the articles online and watched the youtube videos about him, it seems he needs at least a year and a half to bed the whole squad into his particular brand of play.
Despite what a few think of me on here, I for one, would be happy to go down that road if it leads to success and firm foundations in years to come.
Don’t think the majority of our supporters would be with me on this though.
Whether he gets time or not will depend on how long ’til we get the GTF stuff that some have history of. I think we need to forget about NL & BR now as they are gone.
For supporters hanging back until the last minute before buying a ST. …..dont know what that will/can achieve apart from you feeling good about it.

That’s two different things, and the board have shown themselves to be very supportive of managers regardless of the pressure from outside
It looks like Ange has got thick enough skin to deal with it as well
ONIL @ 3.07 – It’s a reasonable concern and something which is also weighing on my mind, but I’m choosing to be optimistic.
It’s been suggested that it took over a year to implement his strategy at Brisbane Roar as he was operating with less naturally skilled players, less time at Yokohama FM as the player levels were better but still nothing like most top European leagues. It should be easier to implement at Celtic as, despite the season we’ve just witnessed, they remain a highly skilled and athletic bunch of professional footballers.

DD gave the order for NL to be re-employed, he and Peter Lawwell went to the showers together, to relay Dermot’s decision, por cierto

I’ve recruited lots of new colleagues over the years.
But never like that.
I feel like I need a shower myself now!

A PLC is not the right vehicle for a Football Club.
Certainly not our club.
Fergus needed a vehicle to attract investment to pay for the ground and for him to make his money and get out. This vehicle was Fergus and his call. It was fashionable at the time. Most EPL clubs are no longer PLC.
A PLC is governed by Companies act which basically means that it primary is a business to make profits for the shareholders. This is the opposite of why Celtic was formed. Fans only don’t figure
Celtic operate within the legislation but at the same time we strive to not pay a dividend to Ordinary Shares.
What Vehicle should we use to be compatible for Celtic and Walfrids wish?
Best I have heard is some sort of Association like Bayern Munich but not clear how we get out of being a PLC

If he is allowed to sign the type of players that suit his style then who knows…
so we got rid of a cowbhoy and nearly employed another until he said no.
Given his style of play it’s imperative that we have quality defenders and gk they’ll be vitally important on how we’ll play let’s see if he’s backed.
I don’t think we’ll need to wait long to find out how seriously the board are about approaching these changes. If, as usual, we go into the Euro qualifiers under strength then we know nothing has really changed. They have backed themselves into a corner and need to respond or the inevitable failure to qualify for any Euro competition will see us fall further down the downsizing helter skelter.
I fervently hope that they give Ange a chance.
BIGBHOY on 11TH JUNE 2021 4:31 PM
A PLC is not the right vehicle for a Football Club.
Certainly not our club.
I’m not sure how anyone can be so certain about that – the PLC model is not perfect but in the last 20 years we’ve been massively successful domestically, especially when you take the Huns cheating into consideration.
Fan ownership works so well in Germany because everyone has to have it. Even then you get people gaming the system, and gaining the unfair advantage that private ownership gives you over fan ownership.
“A PLC is governed by Companies act which basically means that it primary is a business to make profits for the shareholders. This is the opposite of why Celtic was formed. Fans only don’t figure”
Actually the Companies act states: A director of a company must act in the way he considers, in good faith, would be most likely to promote the success of the company for the benefit of its members as a whole, and in doing so have regard” to specified other interests, impacts and consequences.” That doesn’t necessarily mean paying dividends out of profit or increasing the share price. At Celtic profits aren’t paid out as dividends to ordinary shareholders, the money goes back into the business as per the wishes of the shareholders
“Fergus needed a vehicle to attract investment to pay for the ground and for him to make his money and get out. This vehicle was Fergus and his call. It was fashionable at the time. Most EPL clubs are no longer PLC.”
We aren’t in the EPL, though, where the clubs are a million miles away from fan ownership. 14 out of 20 are foreign-owned, with all the complications that that brings – crooks, crooked regimes and investment firms with nothing but the bottom line in mind.
Private ownership in very attractive util you get a bad owner or someone who runs the club purely for personal profit
Porteous to Celtic? I’d take him for his tackling, attitude and dressing room influence!
TIMMY7_NOTED on 11TH JUNE 2021 4:55 PM
If, as usual, we go into the Euro qualifiers under strength then we know nothing has really changed.
Not really, it depends on what you see as possible between now and then and what you see as being full strength.
Not having our first team in place by mid July won’t signify a lack of support from the board. As Paul67 says getting our recruitment right fit the next couple of seasons is far more important than having a team in place by mid July.
Just been looking up Anges record as a manager. Claims that he is our caixinha are risible. He is also vastly more experienced than Ronnie Deila. It us his period with the Australian national team that encourages me most. He has dealt with players who played mostly in European football at high levels and he seems to have their respect.
I’d be surprised if we didn’t pick up a gem or two player wise from Asia and Australasia
Looking forward to the new season.
I meant to add – anyone know any players Postecoglu is likely to bring in? Any budding Nakamura types or the new Tim Cahill or even, without the crappy attitude, Marco viduka?
While I’m on a roll, one thing we need to get back is a bit of attitude. We were too soft last season. Teams need to fear us a bit physically as well as football wise.
With broonie away we lost our last vestige of that in the current squad. That needs addressed.

————–
At the right price maybe. Is he any better than Hendry was? I ask in all seriousness. I don’t know his game well enough.
I’d take a punt on Nisbett. He has something about him even if he is rough around the edges at times.
Paul67 it’s your site and you can write what you believe
Your chats with Mr Lawwell mean you are restricted in what you write – understandable – never disrespect the source
But please do not spin the new manager as some sort of master craftsman
The new Manager is a gamble
A huge gamble considering if you win the league you go into CL group stage
All new Managers are a gamble but some are less of a gamble than others
Be clear this is out there with shooting from the halfway line – a real long shot
Now i will pray that the man does a good a job and gets us back on top of the league
But don’t talk him up like he has a brilliant reputation
It’s a gamble
Further
Are we to assume everything else stays the same, Kennedy Strachan et all
or did you not ask Mr Lawwell
From Eddie Howe and his team from the English premier League to an unknown on his own from the Japanese J league
Underwhelmed worried nervous and praying

So you’re happy for the expectation management to continue?
When do we say enough is enough?
We have failed to prepare for euro qualifying every season with this board, I’d say a serious attempt at least after this seasons fiasco has to be demonstrated.
