We hired a builder

When looking for a new manager, Celtic usually try to fix the biggest shortcoming the previous guy had.  In May 2019, Neil Lennon’s biggest asset was his “eye for a player”.  There were other attributes. he twice got Celtic into the Champions League group stage where he delivered some of the most memorable nights in our European history, but Celtic’s decline started with his predecessor’s inability to sign quality players after the arrival of Scott Sinclair.

When it fall apart last season, Neil seemed unable to imagine how to organise a squad that was performing significantly below the sum of its individual parts.  Apparently simple tasks, like how to organise at defensive set pieces.  The answer to that particular question was Eddie Howe.

Howe took a team of lowly £17m misfits and marshalled them into a very solid unit.  He also had other attributes, but that ability to defend a corner kick was very convincing.

I spoke to Peter Lawwell soon after Brendan Rodgers left and again after Neil Lennon’s departure.  Neither Neil nor Eddie fitted the bill he was initially looking at.  On this occasion, Ange Postecoglou fits perfectly.  Technically proficient, capable of withstanding the intensity of our game, with an ability to make us a far better team three years out than we were when he took over.

It’s that last attribute we recruited yesterday.  Neil and Brendan both left teams that were poorer than two years previous.  We hired a builder.

  1. If we do need a DOF I think wee strach is a good shout…………

I think an old head is a good idea at this time.

Love him or loathe him he’d also supplya wee bit of continuity – again, helpful with all this revolotionary stuff going on on the background.

I think we should also let Big Ange decide whether Jk and Co are worth keeping or not.

Steven Gerrard has been appointed as Rangers manager on a four-year deal.

The former Liverpool midfielder, 37, replaces Graeme Murty, who was placed in interim charge following the October sacking of Pedro Caixinha.

Gerrard, who leaves his role as a youth coach at Anfield to take up the Rangers job this summer, captained the Reds and England.

The appointment which took 210 days since Pedro Caixnha was sacked is a gamble on an untried manager without UEFA qualifications and questions remain over his backroom staff , transfer budget and how he will cope with the pressure in the Ibrox hot seat.

….. I took a few liberties with this BBC report …. Just to make the point

  3. Great shout on WGS as DoF.

    He’d be my first choice.

Some good debate around continuity of backroom team vs manager having his own inner circle.

I’m in the ‘trusted lieutenants’ camp. Especially with AP coming into such an alien environment.

The alternative would be a worry for me.

That we haven’t heard to the contrary makes me think he’s coming alone. My uneducated opinion only.

  4. Two correct match outcomes so far….so this one bound to be wrong

    Denmark -2 handicap…….

Hoping Morten Wieghorst as assistant gets the result!

    ———-

Ideally it would be a mix of the two.

Though any manager worth his salt should be able to come into a job and improve the place no matter if he is given average tools, that’s why he’s getting paid the big bucks.

  6. Keep an eye on Jonas Wind in Denmark v Finland, on my list for possible Celtic striker buys.

  7. SONSOFERIN on 12TH JUNE 2021 5:10 PM

Will keep an eye out, the Danish look excellent on the ball, last third they make at least 3 options available to the ball carrier, difficult to defend against.

Good Post mate, my feelings entirely,

Let’s see what Ange brings and back him, it can’t be any worse than last season, watching unfit, uninterested players pulling the hoops on. 🍀

  9. Go tell the Spartim on

What did Lennedy win last year ? What team does NL manage now.

Your as well quoting me as a winner because I sat in my seat for all those games during 9 in a row.

He had a chance to show us what he could bring, with potentially better players at his disposal than AP will have ……….

Not interested in being the bestest Celtic supporter only interested in Celtic being the best they can be.

  10. Professional players, coaches, managers all praise Kennedy, versus being called names as an argument, on a forum, anonymously with all that other input disregarded……

Sure the Club and Ange will make the right decision 🍀

  11. They were doing resuscitation, his eyes were non-reactionary and he was having convulsions.

I feel sick to the stomach

  12. GO TELL THE SPARTIM on 12TH JUNE 2021 5:53 PM

No worries man. We each have our view.

  13. Go tell the Spartim on

    Martin 1980

I thought he’d be a star as a player and I know nothing (as most of us don’t ) as a coach except what I’ve seen, limited as that was. AP needs at least 1 of his own man.

    Prayers for Erickson

There’s bound to be a middle ground.

    I rated him highly too

  16. Horrific. CPR and defibrillator applied. Hope he can pull through.

Prayers for Erikson, his wife who was there and his family.

  17. Hail, Mary, full of grace,

    the Lord is with thee.

    Blessed art thou amongst women

and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.

    Holy Mary, Mother of God,

    pray for us sinners,

now and at the hour of our death.

    Amen.

  18. An Tearmann,

Yup, you just never know the minute. I think the BBC should have cut pictures a lot sooner.

Not sure the tournie can continue if tragic news comes out.

On a better note…. Welcome to Celtic Ange. I hope you have a very successful tenure.
