We hurt Newco players, Sunday will not be an exhibition

327

I know a few who were indifferent about winning the league at Easter Road on Sunday with the prospect of winning it against Newco this weekend, but it is not how Brendan Rodgers views things.

It doesn’t matter how you regard Newco in a historical context, these games bring an inherent pressure for Celtic to win (and Newco to at least lose while competing) that it would suit the manager to have already won the league before crossing swords with Graeme Murty for the third time in seven weeks.

We should also remember, this is not a Harlem Globetrotters game, where an exhibition of slick entertainment will take place with the result predetermined.  We hurt Newco’s players.  They have been professionally embarrassed in a very public manner, something which could inhibit their career opportunities – and let’s be clear, many of them will want to move on from Murray Park this summer.

We have to anticipate that they will play better at Celtic Park than they did at Hampden.  At the very least, someone inside the away dressing room is likely to say “Lads, can you keep an eye on the big Australian guy?”  They have learned several of our stock plays in recent weeks and they have learned what does not work against them.  This fact alone will make them better prepared.  Napoleon warned his generals not to fight the same opponent too many times, as they will learn all you moves.  He had a point.

Scott Brown quite rightly called the prospect of winning the league on Sunday the “sweetest” way, but this is not what you want to hear from players prior to a game.  As the captain himself noted after our Scottish Cup semi-final win, do you talking on the park.  Opponents use words like this to create a common purpose, especially when they are struggling to find any commonality naturally.

Raffle to play in an 11-a-side game at Celtic Park

An incredible opportunity to play on the hallowed turf at Celtic Park around the end of the current season 2017-18, in Club sponsor Intelligent Car Leasing’s match.

You will be provided with complimentary Celtic kit and receive the full match-day experience including arrival through the front door, access to the dressing room and proudly walking down the tunnel to enter the famous field of play.

Both squads will be managed by a former Celtic player. Date TBC; please note it may be a weekday. All monies raised will be donated to Celtic FC Foundation, a registered Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation (number SC024648).

To enter the raffle, make a minimum donation of £5 to the Foundation at this MyDonate page.  Then send your donation confirmation email to this address: celticquicknews@gmail.com

The opportunity to play on Celtic Park is just beyond words.  I did it a few years ago, the memories will live forever, as will the photographs.  The experience of preparing in the dressing room, as so many greats have done before, was fabulous.

You can enter for yourself, or gift the prize to someone you know aged 18 or over. Competition closes at 15:00 this Friday, 27th.

Good luck!

  3. Afternoon all,

A little story, if you’ll indulge me for a moment, comprising a memory from one of the derby games I attended from just over 25 years ago. Off topic so scroll past if you’re looking for comment on the current leader.

Anyway I took her majesty, aka my missus, to an us vs huns game, and as background she’s kind of English, well from Newcastle which is pretty close, so she wasn’t fully aware by then about some of the traditions and songs that are sung at these matches. She’s a diehard Tim now.

So the huns launch into the billy boys of course and she goes ‘Oooo I know this one!’ Cue everybody within earshot immediately taking an interest and turning around to look at us. And me nervously going ‘Ehhmm hahahah no you don’t hahah’. Smile, shake head, reassure everybody.

Then she goes ‘No, I do, I DO!’, and to prove it she starts SINGING AS WELL, ‘Hello, Hello…’.

Shock all round, somebody even grips me by the shoulder, presumably to urge me to encourage her to desist. But I’m also in shock by now and looking on in absolute horror with my chin hanging down round my belly button. And I go to try and clap my hands over her mou’ but she dodges me and continues with…

‘Who’s your lady friend..? See, I DO know it!’

A couple of seconds of stunned silence all around us with the bhoys all looking as if someone had just slapped aw their faces, and then someone snorted and we’re all laughing, thank goad.

Anyway, hope that gives you a wee chuckle. It does me whenever I think about it now :)

    Hail Hail,

    KevinBhoy.

  4. MIT & TAL, Thanks for the concern bhoys and although that is pretty close to my place I was safe and sound. Where the cop actually caught the guy at Yonge & Shepard is where my daughter hangs out a lot; she was supposed to go there yesterday with her pal who lives a few streets over; but for some reason they had to do an extra half hour in class this week so she just went home:)

I’ve always thought it’s just a matter of time before something happens in Toronto, which is a pity because it’s such a diverse multi cultural melting pot.

Once again. If Celtic bring their A game there should only be one winner. Not saying it will be easy. Just confident the title will be won against the huns.

  7. M6BHOY @ 7:53 & 8:32 AM,

    Just catching up…

There has been a good debate today regarding kits and branding, some very good points made.

The brand’s wax and wane, I’d certainly think Nike is waning… but at the end of the day Celtic are going to go for the best deal for the Club.

SAN LUIS mentioned the 40th & 50th Anniversary kits, both great kits… I decided to compare and contrast the tops. Think the Nike top is slightly better quality but the NB top is a better design and certainly a better fit (for the middle aged svelte ghuy;)

When it comes to the Badge there’s no comparison, the Nike top has a proper badge.

Interesting some pointing out that the NB Liverpool badge is embroidered. Well it is a simpler design with one colo(u)r and they do sell for £90 a pop.

Yet if you are forking out 50-60 quid for a “T shirt” a decent badge would be nice.

Saw the Scotland’s shame Hummel arrows – classic:))))

As for brand awareness, a wee story…

A few years ago my sister bought my #1Grandson (then 4 y.o.) a watch for Christmas. The strap was too long. She said…

Sis2: I’ll get you a wrist sweat band and you can put the watch over that til it fits.

    GS1: What’s that?

Sis2: Here’s one on my phone

GS1: Ah! Yes they look great, I’ll have those… It’s got to be Adidas though…

    Hail Hail

I think Bain and Edouard will be signed on permanent deals.

Moussa may stay until January (providing we make CL) but that will depend on who comes in for him. If he goes we’ll sign another striker in addition to Edouard (Hernandez from Hull on a free being linked?). Speaking to a Newcastle fan and he says Fulham offered £15m for Mitrovic in January and if promoted will try for a permanent deal again so he’s out of our price range.

McGinn will replace Armstrong in the squad IMO, no brainer.

    Musonda is Roberts replacement.

We need a right back and a centre half as a priority, especially with Lustig and Boyata at the World Cup and unavailable for CL qualifiers (as will Rogic).

G67- I agree mostly, i think we might try another loan for Edouard,or try to get fee reduced.I would try and see if we can buy Paddy, his fee might be less a year on, and maybe Pep would rather sell to us , in case he comes back to haunt them for an EPL club.

  12. Best of luck to Liverpool tonight.

ps If your intent on selling Salah in the summer we’ll take him off your hands

  15. I’m going to my first ever Celtic v sevco game this Sunday courtesy of a fellow Tim who has another, important, engagement. I’m not selling out, I’m hopefully going to see my team win the league against one of the other participants in that league. Had I been able to get a ticket for Easter Road I would have been there. I would like to win in style but will take any type of victory even a Morelos og ????????

yeah, it’s going to be very different this weekend – keep the head, keep giving options to the player at the back, let them run themselves till they’ve no puff left and keep making chances

‘I was at the game,” © Jimmy Sanderson the subsequent Ten Men Won The League tag, was always controversial not to mention the alleged strike by TV men and the mysterious ‘no camera coverage,’ would you adam and eve it, just like the 7-1 game when there was also no coverage.

  25. Just watching SPFL round up, Thistle v Hamilton, the Hamilton player Jenkins commits one of the worst fouls of the season, John Beaton standing 3 yards away, has to almost jump out of the way. Not kidding Jenkins hit the guy in the back of the knee, absolute hatchet job and deliberate. Only a yellow card issued. Deary me.
