We know to expect silence from Crawford Allan

178

It is with a heavy heart I write about referees.  Don Robertson made a glaring mistake in not awarding Celtic a first half penalty against Ross County on Saturday for a remarkably obvious handball incident.  Maybe its because we won the game that I feel generous enough to accept it was a mistake.  I’m less convinced that all three referees on active duty missed the incident.  That doesn’t sound credible.

I bet Bobby Madden has some interesting thoughts on the penalty he awarded at Dens Park yesterday.  This is less easy to explain as a mistake, how can you miss seeing something that did not happen?  What Madden’s motivation was to make his decision is worthy of consideration by SFA head of refereeing, Crawford Allan.

Allan has only spoken out against his referees’ decisions when he believed they benefited Celtic.  We know to expect silence from him this week.

If you are not dyslexic ( no shame in that ), I assume that your persistent misspelling of my moniker is deliberate. As for Timothy Castagne, Rodger’s strong desire to sign either him was noted in several European publications at the time. ( Check the third paragraph from one source below ). Rodgers wanted him and the negotiations mysteriously kept stalling ( I wonder why? )

“It was the Northern Irishman who convinced Castagne that Leicester, despite having missed out so agonisingly on Champions League football, was the place for him even when Tottenham and vanquishers PSG were interested.

‘I liked Leicester’s playing style, good football with high pressure. But I also wanted a coach with whom I can have a relationship. We can talk, he can help me work on my weaknesses. That’s why I chose to come here because I had a really good impression of him.’

The feeling worked both ways. Rodgers had been a long-term admirer of Castagne and tried to sign him during his time at Celtic.

‘I have a profile of player I like to play in my teams and usually the guys that play full-back are ones who are really athletic, have great speed going forward and also have tenacity when they defend, ’ said Rodgers. ‘That was something I had seen with Timothy.”

To this day I’m grateful to Brendan Rodgers for his relatively short tenure at Celtic.

He left suddenly, looking after no.1 which is a trait throughout his career.

    Really good coach …

… but not so good talent spotter, IMHO.

Tielemans, Fofana, Perez, Castagne, Praet and Vestegaard purchased for a combined c.€170m.

Only the first name starts regularly.

    Hhmm.

In other news, are Police Scotland any closer to catching the guy who tried to burn Peter Lawwell’s house down while he and his family were in it?

More than 8 months since the crime.

I’m sure Police Scotland are beavering away furiously, sparing no expense …

… They’ve probably no money left to waste on public updates on the case because all hands are investigating.

    If so, very reassuring.

  5. Back to Basics - Glass Half Full on

If Police Scotland are indeed shuffling their feet, they should take a leaf out of the Met’s book.

    https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-politics-60827451

More than 100 questionnaires sent out in just 56 days since the criminal investigation began.

    That’s almost 2 questionnaires a day !

    Impressive.

    Go get ’em Met.

  6. The worrying thing for me is the acceptance of the the officials decisions.

Whether poor or deliberate the next game is massive and can be heavily influenced by a referee

Stop celtics free flowing football ..easy blow for every little opportunity to stop game.

Free kick … hold off to restart game.

Celtic fouls … yellow card till a player is off

Penalties … Well we know how this goes

It is perfectly feasible for any government to have no plans to do ABC, then through time as circumstances change, do ABC.

In 2019/20 the government took the UK out of the EU. In 2015 the government had no plans to take the UK out of the EU. Were the government lying in 2015? Of course not.

    __________

that’s not true. ukip had plans to take britain out of eu in 2015 and that represented a threat to the tories who knew that they would have to call a referendum or they would be out. so to say that the tories hadn’t plans is naive. don’t ask me what the plans where but referendums take years to organise so obviously there were plans being finalised in the background before publication. brexit hasn’t properly happened yet and can’t be fully executed till the irish situation is resolved that won’t happen under tories or, labour who wouldn’t be able to come back from breaking up the union, so it’ll have to be another pro brexit party, free of eu and usa, hopefully, the dollar$ is almost officially dead so what a mess that’ll make, well out of it, the west is dead after their virus lunacy, but only 10% of the worlds population are from the west, 3% of the worlds children are from the west, looks like the west is over.

The first international break of the year is now upon, as several of the Celtic squad head off across the globe to represent their respective countries.

For those playing in Europe, there’s a mix of friendly action and crucial World Cup play-offs as the semi-finals and finals to reach the Qatar event takes place over the next week.

Scotland should have been playing for a place at the World Cup, but with the current situation in Ukraine, that play-off match has been postponed until a later date.

However, Callum McGregor and Greg Taylor are still away with Steve Clarke’s side as they face Poland in a friendly at Hampden on Thursday, and then face Austria or Wales in another friendly away from home the following Tuesday.

The other Celts taking part in friendly matches in Europe include Nir Bitton, who is with Israel to face Germany away from home on Saturday, Josip Juranovic who plays Slovenia and Bulgaria with Croatia, and Giorgos Giakouamkis who is recalled to the Greece squad to play Romania and Montenegro away from home.

Carl Starfelt is also back in the Sweden team for a game of huge importance as they play in a World Cup play-off at home to the Czech Republic on Thursday, and if they advance they will play in the final against Poland.

Elsewhere, there are more crucial World Cup qualifiers Reo Hatate, who faces Australia in Sydney, before taking on Vietnam in Japan.

    UNDER-21S

There’s Under-21 action for Matt O’Riley who has been called up for Denmark for the first time, while Liel Abada and Stephen Welsh are with the Israel and Scotland U21s respectively.

    UNDER-19S

Johnny Kenny has a place in the Ireland Under-19s and will come up against Tobi Oluwayemi who is in the England U19 squad, as the two teams play each other in their first game of a packed triple-header of European Championship qualifiers.

I see Scottish Labour have withdrawn a candidate from the local council elections because of her anti-Irish and anti-Catholic bigotry and for claiming that under an independent Scotland, the SNP will install a Catholic monarchy.

  17. TOM MCLAUGHLIN on 22ND MARCH 2022 8:57 AM

Yet more evidence that unlike England Scotland has an enduring problem with anti Irish Catholic sectarianism (you’ll note that one of the tweets was aimed at Catholic English Labour MP, Rebecca Long-Bailey).

Just one more reason not to isolate ourselves from the English and therefore to oppose Scottish independence.

  18. Was thinking about how many goals our new forwards have scored. I’m always happy to see a new signing hold his own up front but to have Maeida, Gia, Kyogo and Abada all hitting the back of the net regularly we’ve won a watch (I’m not sure how many Jota has scored but he’s obviously great too).

And when you consider the number of forwards we’ve signed in the last 10 years or so that did nothing…

Quiz time – how many can you name?

Thinking back, was there an argument on here that signings are pot luck? I get that you can’t guarantee success but surely you can improve your chances of them being so.

Scepovic (should have worked, blew it himself)

Lassad (could argue he did alright for a free)

On loan players: Weah and Burke make a difference I thought in their temporary role. Miku did little but played vs Barca. Guidetti was night and day; took Scepovic’s place, banged them in then fizzled out. Griffiths was the winner in all that
