We might begin looking like a team on Saturday

852

I’m sure Ronny Deila has used the international break to take in as many scouting games as possible, but he’ll be keen to see his players return to Lennoxtown, fit and available for selection.

Adam Matthews spoke to Celtic media on possibly returning for Saturday’s game against Ross County.  Having not played since August he’ll be well short of match fitness but his presence is badly needed.  We have a must-win Europa League game against Astra next week, with the shape of the team looking so haphazard at the moment it’s crucial we get a benefit of a recognised right back.  Adam needs an hour on Saturday.

Now that central mid is looking solid with Brown and Johansen, the addition of Matthews and McGregor will benefit the right, while allowing Mubarak to fit into his more natural position on the left.  We might begin looking like a team.  Adam also has the engine to play the football Ronny is keen on.

The only question remains how to get our Europa League-eligible strikers looking the part – and that’s not a suggestion to drop John Guidetti on Saturday!

  1. I completely disagree that centre midfield looks solid, although admittedly it has looked a lot better since Broony’s return, they get badly over-run in most games against an extra man and need reinforcements. I’m also keener to see the return of Mikael Lustig than Adam Matthews. Ideally I’d like the two of them back with Lustig at RB and Matthews in front of him. Deila’s preferred winger approach is not working for me and we are not creating enough chances through them. His chosen wingers rarely get down the by-line and provide decent crosses or pick anyone out with passes, instead they are all too happy to either cut inside or pass the ball and the buck to the full-backs which often in Efe’s case was beyond his abilities.

I don’t just think the league is our priority this year, I think the league is our priority every year. I don’t fret too much over the fact that we are sitting back in sixth place, the points gap and games played are much more important figures as things stand today, for me, but every point we drop only encourages all the other teams in the league to have a go at us and we do look ever so dysfunctional and fragile as a team as each week passes.

We need to start getting points on the board again and putting a respectful fear into our opposition, lest we also encourage the MIB to also up their game too. I honestly don’t think we will win the Europa and although European games can be exciting they don’t pay for the bread and butter and often deflect from the real issues.

  3. Lawellsaccount.Your lanuage towards our manager and some of the players on here is terrible . we all know that some of them are not very good, and thats it, but to say words like twat, useless ,etc ,is just not on.

  4. Getting a little confused with all the the references to German,Dutch , and Polish today. One theme seems to run through all the posts about our formation week in and week out. The majority of us cannot understand why we keep getting over powered in the midfield, our backs and our wingers do not interchange well enough and yet this is not seemingly picked up by the coaches. If most of us, the amateurs, can see it,why can’t they? Or are most of us missing something, still to be revealed?

I love Celtic dearly, but right now not being able to get to games appears to have something to be said for it . On the other hand, I am desperately waiting to get back. It is just being a celtic supporter, I guess.

  5. Browns weakness is his ball retention .

Johansen would be great in a game of Tig, but he is a poor mans Paul Hartley.

Kayal is finished at any decent level.

    Matthews is injury prone.

Denayer isn’t our player and is too short for a Centre Half.

    Skepovic and Tonev are ghosts.

Derk is a crock , and is pish.

    I could go on forever.

Only VVD , Gordon and Guidetti are of any serious level, and Guidetti isn’t our player.

My heart breaks at the shite we are watching.

    There I said it.

Barcabhoy wants to know how to get the fans back.

Get us back to watching a higher standard of player in a Celtic shirt.

  6. Oh and before the perennially offended jump on.

If you haven’t heard a player or a piece of play described as shite, then you haven’t been to a Celtic match.

I’m gutted at the drop in playing standards.

    Celtic nostalgia eh?

Back in the day people used to come up to me and say

    “Are you Brian McClair?”

    And I’d say

    “Naw”

  10. Football is a simple game

Play a back four that defend first.

Allow your Centre backs to carry the ball out of defence if a team is sitting deep

Play a three man midfield any two of which have the license to go forward and join the strikers as long as one covers

Play two wingers that become a second striker when the ball is on the other wing.

Get to the bye line to cross

Play a striker who stays central, is quick, strong and shoots with first or second touch

  11. I read Paul’s article with a mixture of amazement and a bit of anger/frustration.

There is a massive reality gap at the moment. We appear to have gone all ostrich like!

    Hate to say this but…

The SFA did NOT delay the Guidetti transfer.

The problem was that Man City had not formally recalled his loan to Stoke, and consequently, the player could not be registered as a Celtic player on the system.

Man City failed to amend the system before the deadline. Only Man City could have done this. Frustrating of course, but nothing SFA could have done in the circumstances as it was not in their gift to rectify Man City’s error.

Tiny Tim, I agree entirely. We revel in looking for gems in the scree left by others. We dwell on the scree for longer hoping it will turn good. Meanwhile we lose football matches.

I like Denayer. I think he is a good footballer who suits our team. Thing is, I’d rather we had a permanent player who was ours that could occupy centre back. We now have two centre halfs who in all probability will not be here next season. I can guarantee that we will scout no one as a suitable replacement. There are dozens of players we could buy at 2m for either centre back position in January but we won’t do it and instead will sell VVD with no replacement until after the Champions League qualifiers. Denayer will likely be off to man city or sold to a fair to midlin PL side.

Brown and Commons out of contract, Wakaso back to Russia or punted by them thanks to out exposure of him.

We ignore good solid internationalists who could be bought for relative peanuts and instead go for high volume pish.

The Guidetti situation could work in our favour but at this stage Scepovic looks worse than Pukki. One long range shot v Salzburg his only contribution of note.

If Scepovic needs game time then Ronny should play both Giidetti and Scepovic but he won’t because 4 2 3 1 is king. I’d even go as far as to say that Miku impressed me more.

Scepovic was meant to be our number one target. Incidentally VVD wasn’t. Tonev was a target last year. All we had to do was watch Villa to see how bad he was.

Meanwhile Andrew Robertson, Ikechi Anya et al continue to thrive.

I think Johansen has been included in about all the posters selected teams that i have seen!

  17. I met BMCUW on Saturday for the first time at the Hootenanny organised by his good self.

My wife and wee girl and me had an overnight in Glasgow yesterday, home today.

After an exhausting wander about the city centre yesterday, (that’s what I told them) we were heading for the Corinthian for a liquid refreshment when, out of this fancy restaurant comes BMCUW and his lovely Mum!

It really is a small Celtic world.

    Hail Hail to you all!

“Central midfield is looking solid with Brown and Johansen…” aye, solid as a block of ice…apply a wee bit of heat and you know what happens……the jerseys are shrinking to fit these players…

    Mullet,

If wakaso impresses and celtic want him he will be a Celtic player.

It’s also not unthinkable that guidetti and Scepovic could play in a 4-2-3-1.

At times last season, Johansen Did look the part, no idea what is going wrong this season

Incidentally, his ball retention and passing is no worse than Scott Browns, for those who watch the game.

And that is where we are losing midfield battle, reason I have put Biton and Henderson in middle, youth, good first touches, can retain the ball and find a pass, my view only build from there ? Also believe Scott Brown best position is to right of any midfield, and fed up seeing our strikers move to the left, hence Johansen there, where he would work effectively with both full back, midfield & front ?

Tinytim – nail and head come to mind with your post earlier.

I would like to see some of our youth given a chance, McMullan in front of Berget/Tonev or Boerrigter as an example

    Hail Hail

  22. Love your optimism Paul67, but I don’t share your belief in our central midfield. I thought that was the reason for our most recent defeat. Broonie is a must pick, but I would love to see someone else in instead of Johansen. We haven’t seen too much of Mubarak yet, but he looks like a strong player with a cultured left foot. I would try him in the center left slot.

Agree we have missed Adams/Lustig at right back. Everything just seems makeshift right now and it’s time to get our shape sorted.

Football registrations are managed via the FIFA TMS system.

  25. Paul, sorry but our midfield is shocking as when pressed we crumble, too many loose passes and there is many tackles going in. I’ve been to all our home games and 3away not including murrayfield which also I was at and the midfield has been over run in every single game apart from Dundee utd but they split us open a few times. I’ve no explanation why this is or solution as broony coming back has helped but Hamilton showed us up as did Dundee st.mirren etc. Now we aren’t sure if a wee team like Hamilton with so many youngsters can be beaten at Celtic park. I do hope Ronny sorts ot but scared that we start to lose too many points and the league is not a cert god forbid that happening, anyway been reading this site from day one and thks for giving us it
