We might begin looking like a team on Saturday

852

I’m sure Ronny Deila has used the international break to take in as many scouting games as possible, but he’ll be keen to see his players return to Lennoxtown, fit and available for selection.

Adam Matthews spoke to Celtic media on possibly returning for Saturday’s game against Ross County.  Having not played since August he’ll be well short of match fitness but his presence is badly needed.  We have a must-win Europa League game against Astra next week, with the shape of the team looking so haphazard at the moment it’s crucial we get a benefit of a recognised right back.  Adam needs an hour on Saturday.

Now that central mid is looking solid with Brown and Johansen, the addition of Matthews and McGregor will benefit the right, while allowing Mubarak to fit into his more natural position on the left.  We might begin looking like a team.  Adam also has the engine to play the football Ronny is keen on.

The only question remains how to get our Europa League-eligible strikers looking the part – and that’s not a suggestion to drop John Guidetti on Saturday!

Ah yes the very handsome Hutchbhoy. The fog is clearing. Thank goodness my daughter arrived and eventually dragged me away.

  2. Well made it to beautiful Loch Torridon.

It must be all the travelling etc over the last few days Paul but I’m afraid your article simply looks like wishful thinking as opposed to anything based on evidence.

“I can’t understand why so many are advocating a midfield comprising 4 central midfielders?

We are not being over run in SPL games – that’s a myth.”

We may be in a minority but I second that.

It was an issue last season, particularly with Aberdeen but I have not seen any opposition team boss our midfield in domestic football this season. Hamilton did not even try to overwhelm there. Where Hamilton scored was in committing support runners to any counter attack they engineered. Willing workers rather than tactical geniuses.

Legia and Maribor did outshine us there but they waltzed through us rather than out-tactic us. Player weaknesses rather than tactical formation issue.

I am not saying we have no tactical issues but I cannot see an overwhelmed midfield. It seems like a cliché complaint to me.

You had me worried in case my fog was worse than I’d thought..!

HT – Torridon. So stunning mhate. Did you go through Kyle of Lochalsh and past Lochcarron by any chance? That’s where my Mum’s family hail from.

    That’s my spiritual home……when I’m not being a Weedgie!

    Enjoy!

injuries haven’t helped us, but they’re not the only issue

interesting weekend for team, fans and RD ahead

On a separate note. I live a few minutes from Loch Lomond and The Trossachs and in general beautiful scenery a few minutes from my door but I have to say when I first ventured to the area around Kyle of Lochalsh it blew me away. Stunning doesn’t paint the true picture.

No mate, not exactly sure the way we came but it wasn’t through Lochcarron. Basically, turn left at Dingwall and head for Iceland :-)

And then drive up the twisting alpine-style road towards Glenelg and look over your shoulder at the scene behind you……prob best to park before you look!

And then start singing This Land is My Land!

At my job we have a saying that you are only as good or as bad as the last thing you did.

For me,the goal we lost against Hamilton was typical of most of the goals lost this year.

Ball played down their wing.Their winger gathers the ball and draws at least one defender towards him.The lone striker draws our two central defenders into the 6-12yd area and leaves a space of at least 25yds free which 2 or 3 of the opposition midfielders run into to attack the cross. And then our midfielders come trailing a few paces behind,by which time the balls in the net.

I only played amateur football, sometimes in midfield, and it wasn’t,t yesterday, however I can clearly remember that I was keener to “bust a gut” running towards the other teams goal than I was my own, therefore,it made sense to me to make sure I had at least a yard on the midfielder I was marking whenever his team had,or looked like getting possession.

For me,we need to get the basics right and get a settled team on the park for a few games.Even if it is boring.Every Celtic player is at least as good,if not better than his opposite number in the spl,if for no reason other than he,s probably getting 10 times the wages. We should be able to play with a mind to keep a clean sheet and allow our attacking players to grab a goal or two.

The way that teams set-up against us naturally puts our midfielders in advanced positions and therefore even more vulnerable if they switch off defensively.

The root of our problem this year, and some previous years,is that some of the players know that they are playing for a legendary club and therefore assume that they are potentially legendary players.

We the supporters are the one,s to decide that and they will be left in no doubt whatsoever when they earn that status.

At last,a friend who is acceptable in polite company!

Mind, she’s used to my pals fae Kilwinning…

  13. Much as I support RD and agree with a lot of what u say Paul , I cannot agree that our midfield looks solid.

A 2 man midfield will never be solid and as far as I can see we are top heavy with attacking players who can neither score or protect the midfield.

We are being swamped by teams in those areas . Brown and Johansson are all over the place , firefighting.

Playing with 2 wingers is a luxury we cannot afford .

    Solid 4-4-2

Or 4-4-1-1 is the way to go IMO .

RD needs to realise this or I fear it will be his undoing

  14. Burghbhoy

I love width in a team. Get so frustrated when teams stay so/too narrow.

Never thought i’d be shouting that we had too much width….we do now!

It’s as though sometimes the wide ghuys are running on tramlines down the touchline and don’t have the game plan or nous to come inside.

And a 2 man midfield is at least 1 man too short.

    Unbelievable…….except it really did happen.

    You are blessed my friend!

  16. If we are getting swamped by teams, why do we have more possession and far more shots in every SPL game?

  17. Just collected my winnings after betting 1-0 Scotland on Saturday and stuck a wad on 1-1 tonight in Warsaw.

One of the joyous rewards of retiring back to Scotland is strolling down to the local boozer with my son to watch the big game.

    I agree with u.

Would love 2 see 2 wingers of quality firing in dangerous crosses to be finished by a top quality striker.

From what I’ve seen of Tonev and Wakasso they can’t cross past the first defender.

Need better personnel for those areas to succeed in that system

  25. Shortbread’s Lamont foaming ,at the glib and shameless liar’s appearance at Poundland today, of course no mention that he should be barred…….

  26. Yes indeed.

‘On his way out of Ibrox King was asked if he was optimistic and replied: “Yes we are.” ‘

Note that he wasn’t asked if he regretted being part of the board which lead to oldco’s demise or if he is likely to be allowed back on the board following his convictions in SA.

    Sickening really.

  27. Dave King’s in town. FFin’ optimism:

“Could it be? Could it actually be that this effing nightmare might be coming to an end? If Dave King pulls this off, it would be wonderful. I suspect he will rule with a rod of iron.”

    ——

“It’s great news that he’s even in there discussing an offer.

    Please, please, please.”

    ——

“Please dear lord let this mess come to an end an we get our club back”

    ——

“Please let this be it. Please…….”

    ——

“need to keep a lid on my excitement and not get carried away”

Dave’s CV for anyone who is not familiar with it:

‘This conduct was not only in devising a scheme to thwart tax collection, but also as a result of him conducting the subsequent litigation since 2002 on a fraudulent basis for many years until eventually the trustees took control of the litigation in 2007. The Tax Court also held that the trustees did not act in a reasonable manner in allowing King so to do. In the judgement the following finding was made.

Judge Southwood: “Instead, the Bermuda Trust [being the trustee of the Glencoe Trust and the controller of Ben Nevis in Metlika] did none of these things and assisted King, the apparent wrongdoer, to hide the appellant’s assets, to obstruct the South African tax authorities and prolong the tax collection process. These are all aggravating circumstanced and heavily outweigh anything which happened after June 2007.”

Southwood continues: “We saw King testify in chief and in cross-examination for four days and are unanimous in finding that he is a mendacious witness whose evidence should not be accepted on any issue unless it is supported by documents or other objective evidence. It was remarkable that King showed no sign of embarrassment or any emotion when he conceded that he had lied to the Commissioner in a number of his income tax returns. In our assessment he is a glib and shameless liar….

“King is a tall, slim man in his fifties. He appeared to be very confident and not in the slightest uncomfortable about giving evidence and being cross-examined. He is intelligent and articulate and appears to be well versed in the intricacies of the financial world and the purchasing and selling of shares on the JSE. Notwithstanding these advantages, he made a very poor impression as a witness. He is extremely arrogant and obviously thinks that whatever he says is so. It was demonstrated that he deliberately misrepresented the facts of the case to his legal representatives, to Sars in correspondence and at the section 74C inquiry and to the representatives and solicitors of the Bermuda Trust.

“As his evidence progressed it became clear that he has no respect for the truth and does not hesitate to lie or at least misrepresent the facts if he thinks it will be to his advantage. There can be little doubt that on most occasions King lied as he knew the correct facts and obviously decided to misrepresent these facts….” ‘
