We need to be honest with ourselves

255

I read in some places how poor PSV Eindhoven were last night.  PSV are not a poor team, they finished ahead of a Conference League finalist and two points behind a side who won all six of their Champions League group games last season.

During the first half, they were harried out of their stride, were unable to build periods of possession and only remained in the game as they clearly have better players than their well-drilled opponents.  Even if Newco are denied Champions League income next week, we have a fight on our hands for the domestic title.

I’m struggling to think of a single Newco squad member who would get into the Celtic team, but none of us would entertain the fantasy that our current squad would get anywhere near a European final.  Newco players have a curious level of energy and physicality.  This is what took them to Seville and what inhibited Celtic in the clubs two final meetings last season, when we managed a draw and extra-time defeat.

No later than three weeks today we will have played in the Champions League and our [principle domestic challengers.  We need to be honest with ourselves, there is still work to be done.

Russia, China, East Germany, Lance Armstrong, Ben Johnson et al all have history of doping scandals.

But they were all caught and look at the resources and available science these nations and individuals had.

I would really be worried if the huns had such influential and powerful resources to dupe UEFA.

I also don’t see the huns appearing on a rejuvenated Oprah Winfrey show with a great revelation.

    Cheers and HH.

  3. In Bilbao at the moment and visited San Mamés (home to Athletic Bilbao) earlier.

(Amazing how you can get to a stadium, if you really want to).

Did the stadium tour (€20 guided/€14 self guided). Was as good as any of the stadium tours I’ve done anywhere else in Europe.

Steady stream of visitors all day and great to be able to use the café and visit its museum.

    Could catch on.

The first part of your post was very true.

The add on was unnecessary, just controversial and reeked of the attention seeking you just described.

Can someone post if they have already flounced ?

I suppose I could have ignored it but that would have been rude, lazy and hunnish which does not epitomise the ethos of CQN.

It is not just our friends in Govan who are duping EUFA.

Quite a few household names are working the Small Pharma angle to the max.

Doping is niche so it is the boutiques that are working on it.

I have always been puzzled by the small number of clubs who always keep their best performances to the knock out stages of the CL / EuL even when they are having a relatively poor season in the league.

Fair enough you have the cup side angle / the bonuses / league is gone so why bother — but the same teams always seem to “peak” at the right moment — strange that.

Given the history of doping in European football all the way back to the 1954 WC — drugs in football a bit like MIB fiddling / local arrangements / bookie scams should always be taken for granted until proven otherwise.

If the result / results don’t make sense then they don’t make sense and you have to ask why?

Recent seasons in the EPL have seen some incredible swings in performance / defenders having howlers that questions need to be asked — look out for players being “Fernando’ed” — hooked at HT or earlier after playing as if they were drunk.

There is far too much money in football for it to be pure.

The best we can hope for is that it is kept under control / the cheats are on a short leash.

  11. MM,

There can be many reasons for inspired performance. It doesn’t necessarily ensure that drugs or betting scandals are involved.

If we seriously thought that we would give up the ” sport ” , but that is another but familiar debate for another day.

Great results, even giant killing can be down to old fashioned motivation, pride, incentivisation, superior tactics, desire and the opposition having a complete off day. Especially the goalkeeper.

    Cheers and HH.

  12. Memories of BM — so many to choose from.

Men of my vintage would have been late to the party — a bit like the recently departed JH — but they were the mainstays of CFC memories for a slightly older generation.

Not sure if his challenges in the later part of his career were ever fully understood but for football to lose him before he was 32 was a huge blow.

And then you have that old favourite — the BM vs PC debate — could they have both played in the 67 ECF team if PC had stayed?

My thoughts — yes and WW or BL would have lost out depending on where BA would have played.

BM to SM to RG to DS to PMcS — After that only PL came close matching the first and the last.

High hopes for RH though — cut out the schoolboy howlers and his passing range is starting to get close to BM.

  13. see we are linked with a couple more forward flair players – I’m fine with that if Ange can keep the team happy and motivated.

BUT we need a Bobby Murdoch Type – sometimes they appear from the unlikeliest places!

Has anyone tried to sell you a bridge today?

If it doesn’t make sense then it doesn’t make sense — and you have to ask why?

There is too much money in football for it to be pure.

Inspired results — you are right they always can happen.

Just a case that it starts to become very predictable.

The same teams / the same circumstances.

    Then questions are needed.

EPL games — lookout for the wild swings in form / lookout for the playing while drunk vibe / lookout for the HT subs.

I understand , but it makes my blood boil seeing the likes of lundstrum who’s only input in a match is trying to maim fellow professionals . We have had some tough bhoys in our teams over the years I don’t need to name them your a Celtic bhoy you will know , I just wish we had someone to give as good as he takes at times .i feel it is something that’s missing in the team . HH

  16. BM finish to PMcS start = less than 9 years gap — incredible in the big scheme of things.

BM seemed to miss a few matches even in his golden period.

Who played in place of him?

    Late 60’s = ??? / CG?

    Early 70’s = DH?

  17. paul67 – Not many of us thought they would vanish. By hook or by crook they demand success and they’ll do whatever it takes to get it. Your posts often relate to finances, asset management, media misrepresentation – they live in a different world to this. They will challenge for many years to come however dodgy the background puppetry is.

  18. Rumour – Celtic discussing loan bid for McTominay! makes sense with his partnership with Mcgregor.

  19. 67 European Cup Winners on

Paul67 i love the CQN platform you give this community to express thoughts, views, interesting info, and some nonsense, as well as some home truths

But I am at loss to understand your view as a Celtic supporter

When Lawwell was around you wrote about 20 years of dominance

Now PL as wandered off you tell us to be cautious the Hun is coming

I have never assumed the hun had gone anywhere or indeed was going bust

Last year i defended my view about win the league all else is gravy

I have the same view this year

Play your strongest team in any league game

    Rest them for cup games

Automatic entry into the CL Group is the only show in town

Not just for the benefit of Celtic

But for the pressure it puts on the Hun

Paul67 keep up the brilliant work on this site

And welcome to the land of reality – the hun will survive and is not going away

    “““““““““““

An ethos that hasn’t once written an article about the 2016 OLDFIRM ticket deceit?

SEVCO £49 = RANGERS £49 – and Tims became Dims and bought these PLC agreed `trick tickets??

An ethos that presents SEVCO as `Rangers` and the rebellion is complete, after a couple of “ marks have been fixed to `Rangers` name so its high time that we all moved on and demonstrate the moral high ground has been maintained, and now we can stand tall with our chests puffed, knowing that we’ve exhausted every avenue to avenge cheated Celtic supporters?

  24. BM to PMcS to SMcT — surely not / complete haddy.

Where are we going to play him — CB?

SMcT only gets talked about / good reviews because he is hanging about the festering corpse of a football club that is ManU.

Incredibly limited player — NB has more creativity / talent.

Athlete who has gotten lucky — big unit who stood out in age group football.

There might be a player in there somewhere — at the moment it is 10 minutes a game max.

Fair play to AP that he is prepared to kiss so many frogs.

But this is an frog of African Giant / Goliath proportions.

Would go so far as to say he is a toad.
