We need to be honest with ourselves

255

I read in some places how poor PSV Eindhoven were last night.  PSV are not a poor team, they finished ahead of a Conference League finalist and two points behind a side who won all six of their Champions League group games last season.

During the first half, they were harried out of their stride, were unable to build periods of possession and only remained in the game as they clearly have better players than their well-drilled opponents.  Even if Newco are denied Champions League income next week, we have a fight on our hands for the domestic title.

I’m struggling to think of a single Newco squad member who would get into the Celtic team, but none of us would entertain the fantasy that our current squad would get anywhere near a European final.  Newco players have a curious level of energy and physicality.  This is what took them to Seville and what inhibited Celtic in the clubs two final meetings last season, when we managed a draw and extra-time defeat.

No later than three weeks today we will have played in the Champions League and our [principle domestic challengers.  We need to be honest with ourselves, there is still work to be done.

As good an example of the logical fallacy of false analogy as I’ve seen.

There was no valid reason for the Celtic Board not to make it clear that, so far as Celtic were concerned, Sevco were a new club.

It would not have been a confrontational or controversial stance.

At the time it was universally acknowledged that the old club had died.

By their silence and acquiescence Celtic helped those who wished to row back from that position.

The bit in bold I don’t understand as the fallacy is unspecified and I may have made more than one.

However, I agree with the rest of your post which makes me think you did not read my original post too well.

I agree the Board were silent and thus complicit. Even more so I think Auldheid unearthed the proof that they were liars too. All that is agreed.

So where is my fallacy and why are you free from such?

    False analogies:

‘previous Boards and their private business practices. How ethical was Fergus? Bob Kelly got praise for boycotting after the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia but was dead keen on playing teams from fascist Spain. Did all Celts agree?’

  5. 2-2 Stoke equalise in last minute – Middlesbrough wondering how they’ve dropped 2 points – Stoke were absolutely awful.

Ok You’ve specified what you were referring to but haven’t clarified what was false about the analogy.

    An analogy can be :-

a comparison between one thing and another, typically for the purpose of explanation or clarification.

    a correspondence or partial similarity.

a thing which is comparable to something else in significant respects.

My example and that of Fergus and Bob Kelly involved members of our Board, as do the events of 2012.

All of them had something deficient in their behaviour.

I am not claiming they are morally equivalent just comparable situations. So where is the falsehood?

I you think the situations are analogous there is little point in discussing the issue further.

  10. PL = Paul Lambert ??

A first class player in a very specific role. His time in Germany certainly helped with the discipline aspect.

Paul McStay was a far more gifted footballer, probably should have done a KT and left after the centenary double, to reach his full potential.

  13. I have noticed a move towards our board friendly happy clappers having a suitably sized dig / go at Wee FMcC over the past few weeks — not sure what exactly they are claiming he got wrong but the hints / coat trailing is there and now we have one of the more productive members putting it out straight.

Interesting — and all because Wee FMcC had the audacity to deliver on a growth agenda.

The board are now so scared of progress — the £100mill Main Stand rebuild has then shaking in their shoes — that they want to airbrush out past efforts just in case we just ask for more of what we have done before.

If you can show me where my comparison (not an equivalence) falls short of the definition, it would be worth it for me.

If you know something, I am currently unaware of, I can learn from it.

So, for me, there is a point in continuing.

If you wish to tell me I’m wrong but are unwilling to explain how or why then there is no point in continuing, or indeed raising the issue.

  15. JD @ 9.59

I think you do PL a huge disservice.

He managed to play a number of MF roles with great aplomb.

Made a difference in a number of teams and never failed to deliver.

Very difficult to judge the two players.

PMcS was a thoroughbred who had to pull a plough / cart when times were tough.

PL was a grafter who could do dressage on occasion.

The main issue is that the German team could spot his huge talent.

    While the SPL could not.

Some M/well team with both PO’D and PL involved — did we buy the right one?.

  17. 442 park the bus on

RANGERS stole 20+ trophies during a £100 million-ish EBT fraud from HMRC.

We don’t know the true figures involved in these crimes because the SALMOND/KRANKIE govt`s have deliberately muddied the waters from day one.

NO Scottish so called politicians have not since 2012 asked for the `BOOK’S ` to be opened with a view to inform you about where all of your money actually goes to, and ensure that nothing untoward is going on?

Last year 2021 in MAY’S Scottish elections, out of everybody running for election, only GEORGE GALLOWAY promised to do just that, `OPEN THE BOOKS` but alas, CQN`s and almost every other so called CELTIC blog, even the so called investigative journalists, CSA, CST, The GREEN BRIGADE, none of these groups, either paid little attention to GG, or did what some much liked and favoured golden bhoy CQN`s did, and called GG, “RACIST VERMIN, and, BREXIT SCUM.”

Very nice, civic and joyous, etc. lol

MICK LYNCH, EDDIE DEMPSEY, JEREMY CORBYN, GEORGE GALLOWAY.

All “RACIST VERMIN and BREXIT SCUM.” According to certain CQN`s.

    Anyway,….

    RANGERS died in 2012.

2012 OLDFIRM games of CELTIC vs RANGERS, RANGERS vs CELTIC had tickets which cost £49:00.

Fast-forward to 2016, 4 years after RANGERS had died.

A new club called SEVCO were promoted to the SPFL.

SEVCO promoted to SPFL, non Ibrox supporters viewed SEVCO as not being the same as the Ibrox club, RANGERS who died in 2012.

SEVCO = different club from RANGERS who died in 2012.

    And yet….in 2016….

SPFL, CELTIC PLC, SEVCO PLC, must’ve agreed to retain the ticket prices of £49:00 for SEVCO vs CELTIC new OLDFIRM games in 2016, kept at the very same price as in 2012?

If not the above, then who agreed to effectively charge SEVCO ticket price, £49:00 making it look as though RANGERS didnt die in 2012?

Was this a mistake, or brazen deceit?

Who at CELTIC PLC would’ve had the authority to agree to charge this price which would enable a MASSIVE DECEIT to be carried out on cheated CELTIC supporters?

    DESMOND?

    LAWWELL?

ALL of the PLC executive nodding dogs?

And then, to compound that felony, CELTIC season ticket holders actually paid £49:00 for these tickets, then they started singing…

    “YOUR NOT RANGERS ANYMORE.”

The PLC and entire executive = not good enough, regime change required ASAP!

And that was in 2016 ffs!!

The CELTIC season ticket holders are fraudulent fakes as well.

Show me ONE1 single person in the entire CELTIC FC circus who shouldn’t STILL be sacked for this?

But who’ll do the sacking if season ticket holders are clueless to all of this?

    Ignore that troll 1984 CSC

  18. If we, Celtic FC, had drawn 2-2 with PSV in a Champions League play off I’m guessing that we would not be feeling unduly confident going to the Netherlands next week, given what is at stake. Participation in the CL for the first time ever. Cut! For the first time in twelve years. Official. And yet what Paul ill advisely calls ‘NewCo’ ergo the same club, might actually see it differently. They have done relatively better than us in Europe over the last three seasons, they currently have a higher coefficient than us, and had some good away results to teams of a similar standing to PSV. Why, is not a question Paul will ask, but we all know the answer. And as for the that old chestnut, none of their squad would get in our team, fanciful nonsense. Greg Wright, not even a guaranteed first team starter, would fit in well in Ange’s side. Work to be done, certainly if we strengthen not only the squad but the first team then bring it on.

  19. “I was suggesting that Fergus may have used dubious methods to amass his fortune;”

Is this a quote from CQN?

Is it a quote from our friends at “Mental Mental”?

Is this a quote from a Media Ludge stalwart out to do us down?

I have to break the bad news — it is a quote from a CQN stalwart.

What brings good CFC folk to make such heart-breaking accusations?

I fear that some people try far too hard in their support for the board.

I know for a fact that Wee FMcC took his responsibilities as bus convenor for the Holy City CSC very seriously and cannot believe that a man of his standing in the community — Holy City only / Kiltoon had him down as a wrong-un from the word go — would ever stoop to such business lows as “dubious methods”?

    What did he do?

    What do you know?

Have you reported him to Father Joe?

For the hard of thinking amongst us, I was suggesting that Fergus may have used dubious methods to amass his fortune; I made no specific allegation of financial wrongdoing about his dealings with Celtic.

But that won’t stop the dafties misreading.

    SFTB

I don’t normally comment on trash like this, but I do not want to be included with you as being “hard of thinking.” I would also recommend that you refrain from making “suggestions” of that nature against Fergus. I happen to know some of his advisors on a personal basis and your “suggestion” could not be further from the truth. Are you aware of the offense of libel?
