We should always be ready to trade

363

The omens on Matt O’Riley remaining in Glasgow beyond the end of the month are not encouraging.  Celtic knew Brighton were in the market and could be encouraged to pay more when they rejected repeated high bids from Atalanta.  If a player is moving on, a competitive auction is useful.

We are in the business of winning football matches, not to make money out of selling players, but clubs who maximise their potential on the field, need to maximise their transfer operation.  We should always be ready to trade.  *Always.

That means selling when the market for a player is hot, and having replacement options we have a high degree of faith in, who are also within our grasp.  This goes against the grain for football fans everywhere, but it is an absolute truism of the game. The alternative, selling in an uncompetitive market, or allowing values to wither on the vine, is a recipe for decline.

There have been many changes in the management and recruitment side of the club since we signed Matt in 2022; the bar is set high.

*Let’s not even discuss Kyogo in this context.

No way VAR can rule us offside wearing that……….

  5. Odd article:

So we should always be ready to trade but “Let’s not even discuss Kyogo in this context.”

Surely it is either one or the other. If City offer £20M for a 29 year old we would take it in a heartbeat

I also think the message should not be “trade” but “trade up” otherwise you’re treading water. I can understand trading, but trading with no ambition to make your own club better, with the exception of the balance sheet, is not how we should be pro

    It’s a rabbit from a hat time.

Resigned to losing prize assets a long time ago future posts will read, “ everything was fine till we sold ………. “ . Celtic will survive, but not in time to avoid a massive minus going into El Glasigo. How you ‘bed in’ that midfielder Eh Newman within the week, is Brendan Rodgers’s latest problem, no doubt catastrophized via all available internet portals. Maybe best practice a revamped midfield in Paisley whilst we anticipate the arrival of Scotland’s shame, Baldemort and that ‘Rainjurz thing’.

It’s a top notch midfield constant that started with perfect marks, and disguises defensive frailty. Works sweetly with wing backs, formerly full backs, chips in with goals galore, and does a perfect overload. A midfield for all seasons, and a bag of football cliches.

The rabbit BTW, definitely Portuguese and called Paulo.

  7. Woke up about an hour ago. Sheets were dry but I will be double checking each morning for next 9 days or so.

  8. That strip looks awful (obviously just my opinion), but from a practical point of view is not the idea of a stand-out strip supposed to be that means you can find your team mates easily/quickly. The famous rant by Fergie at half time about Man Ure’s grey strip, when they were getting beat, changed out of the grey and went on to win the match, suggests that playing in CAMOUFLAGE might not be the brightest idea (see what I did there).

Maybe alright as a fashion statement (when you don’t want to stand out from the crowd), but not on a football park, surely.

I should perhaps caveat my comment from the outset with a reminder that, although many of our squad are being linked with whoever, as of now none of our top players have left.

“That means selling when the market for a player is hot”

    Logical and reasonable on paper.

    Here’s my problem.

I think it’s safe to assume the market for a player will be hot when that player’s performances are consistently hot.

A successful team will have several consistently hot players simultaneously.

If this article is about Matt then fair enough.

I resigned myself a couple of weeks ago to him leaving … and can live with it.

Matt and Reo both coveted? I start to think that’s too big a hole to carve out and then effectively fill in a short space of time.

    Matt, Reo and Kyogo?

    Now just getting ridiculous.

Good afternoon all from Doheny and Nesbitts, Dublin. Great pub, not changed in over 100 years when Keith Richards was a regular.

  11. I think every Celtic strip looks great but hey I am biased.

We need decent replacements to fill said jerseys if players are allowed to leave.

Whilst our kit maker has been working away on a new strip for the last few months I am sure our powers that be have been working just as hard to fill the Jersey’s. NO?

My knee is killing me by the way, painkillers then a lie down me thinks.

  12. Back to Basics - Glass Half Full on

FWIW – Kyogo’s brain is easily fast enough to be effective in the EPL.

And no team in England does that ‘find a pocket of space’ thing better than Man City.

Perhaps if he is playing alongside guys who are used to operating at this level and can find him in space quickly … it will mitigate the only weakness in his game … competing with guys twice his size for balls which should have been delivered to him three seconds earlier when the lumps were still asleep.

  13. Now, a report out of Poland claims Celtic have opened talks with LAFC over Mateusz Bogusz.

The 22-year old is enjoying a stunning campaign in MLS this season, scoring 13 times from midfield.

  14. i have always thought that kyogo would go to spurs and follow ange.

that he never came back for him suprises me some.

Have seen McCowan’s name mentioned a few times here and there. Tidy enough player and would be a decent signing for a Hearts/Sevco/Aberdeen level club, but I would hope we would be aiming a bit higher.

  16. God- Transfer Window Season is grumpy season

We get upset by all sorts of made up rumours that never come to pass and then we add to that frustration by getting upset by strip designs that aren’t aimed at us and that we never intended to buy anyway. Who the hell owns every shirt that Celtic have ever produced in the last 10 years.

Now- I’m happy to see the various tweaks to the list choice Hoops shirt and can’t think of any that have been unacceptable. there are some that are better than others, iMO, but many would disagree with me about which were good and which were less so. You cannot please every one all the time. I can find things unappealing- like the sad on our current shorts but, so long as these design issues do not interfere with our players ability to play the game, I really cannot get too agitated by my dislikes.

The 2nd and 3rd strips are mostly for the fashion market- we sell them because the Youth want to wear them- not because Celtic Da’s don’t think they look good. Celtic get little say in what strips are chosen. The shirt manufacturers test out their design plans with market research. They will be checking what young people think of proposed designs and they will tout the most selected- most likely to sell and say to Celtic- “there you are! That’s what you’ll be wearing!” Celtic only get a veto if there’s substantial damage done to the first choice Hoops strip or if there’s offensive slogans or imagery.

I won’t be buying any of the current strips but I’ve bought 3 or 4 of the 30+ strips we’ve had in the past 10 years- mostly the dark green or black ones. I say bought- I think one was gifted to us by Celtic in the curtailed Covid season.

Kids will love the strips we dislike and that’s who they are mostly for. Camouflage kit is a new design outlier. I don’t particularly like it or hate it but that doesn’t matter as I’m not in the main the demographic they’re aimed at. Celtic will wear the 3rd strip in fewer than 6 games this season, if that. IN 2 yers time, we’ll forget what the 3rd strip was.

There are more important issues on which we can express our grumpiness.

a great pub. Used to be one of the dangerous ones , spend-wise, as it had a cash machine outside. Now we all tap away merrily!

I remember buying bubbly in there after Scotland beat Ireland at rugby. A few lassies got stroppy with me until i gave them a glass 😎

  19. I will vow no one on here will be wearing the 3rd kit.Look like Fekin Dads Army. Its a fashion kit .My Grandson will have that in a flash. As will countless others.Anyone over 20,or,34 waist, need not apply.😁😁😁😁😁😁

  20. I love the new 3rd kit.

If they can remove the magners from the back I will actually buy one.

  21. In the last 20 years how many times have we started a new season stronger than we ended it Paul?

I can only think of 1. Thats not improving your football club – its accepting your lot. As it is, our lot is the best in an uncompetitive league. Its great to win the league, better to win cups as well but humiliating to be swept aside in Europe with ease.

We have the resources to back a decent coach and it would be nice if we tried once in a while.

O’Reilly is unavoidable but sign players quicker or we lost the momentum and togetherness we’ve felt these last few weeks. We don’t have many creative players that are of the required level, and are losing one soon. Buy more.

  22. glendalystonsils on

Having adequate (at least) replacements poised , pen in hand to sign, is an essential part of our recruitment ‘sell hot’ strategy . If not , the football will decline , or at least stand still , while the coffers burst at the seams .

At the moment nothing is absolutely certain of course , not even Matt going .

  23. Does Matt want to leave Celtic? I would dread to think he is being sold against his and the Manager’s wishes, if all are in agreement so be it.

  24. glendalystonsils on

I hate the new third kit and will definitely be buying one .

    ……for my grandson . He’ll love it .
