An away game after a European away game is statistically the most likely time for a team to drop points, so I doubt Brendan Rodgers will tinker with his lineup too much at Ross County on Sunday. As well as three points there may be valuable information up for grabs again for Celtic.
Watch how County shut down space and try to frustrate Celtic. They will not pretend they are Brazil 1970; attacks by the home side will be infrequent and will never resemble the Light Brigade. There will be timewasting, play will be interrupted with fouls when a County player stops in his tracks in front of a running Celtic player.
No one in world football knows these tactics better than Celtic fans. We get to watch them pretty much every week. Even the elites do it. Borussia Dortmund qualified for the Champions League final after a win over PSG achieved with 30% possession and only 20% of the game’s attempts at goal.
If every day is a school day, let’s leave Dingwall on Sunday wiser and with three points.

It’s a mixture of both, said on here or SC the number of unforced errors also contributed to our downfall. Can think off the cuff , Bernardo x2, Taylor x3 and Meada x1 causing a goal.
Moreover 4-3-3 away , against last seasons finalists was what, brave or daft….

I guess your heading down the route we should be getting similar results to Benfica ….. I suspect the same fixture Benifica v AM the score would be reversed if it was played after Christmas….. I wouldn’t read too much into any one result but the general pattern.
Benfica in the last 20 years have had a better time than ourselves but over 2 legs against us it would be tight (they scraped past the Huns last season)
I suspect Brendan knows what he’s doing and that he is perfectly aware that we need to upgrade the defence but as recent events have shown getting the right players in can prove tricky.
Just finally , the football over the last 4 years has over the piece been very enjoyable we’ve fallen short in Europe but we need to get on with it and not to beat ourselves up into a downward spiral

We cannot hire coaches like Ange and Brendan, and then ask them to be Stein domestically and Herrera in Europe. I know Stein is alleged to have defended once v Dukla in the 67 semi final but no-one has footage of how defensive that was.
If we employed a more defensively minded coach- we’d be wanting him sacked within weeks.
______
Defending when necessary is what Paul67 infered the other day which was interpreted as a dig at BR. And why shouldn’t BR be brought to book for bringing such embarrassment upon the club and its fanbase?
BR has been showering the club with these rid knecks on and off for 8 years now why has he not been sacked? If a wee juvenile holds up an unwelcome banner hypocrits like you and the majority on here demand that said juvenile be carted onto the first Botany Bay slaveship in the morning.

BOSMAN ON STEROIDS
(Late shift)
I am still reading all I can and trying to digest and understand the undernoted. The subject matter is jaw-dropping and the ramifications could be potentially enormous for our club in future. I would be delighted to have other views from interested contributors on CQN.
A nine year process started by Dupont-Hissel, the legal firm representing Lassana Diarra, who just happens to also be Jean-Marc Bosman’s lawyers, has produced a legal ruling in The Court of Justice in the European Union that will change football and be synonymous with the single professional player.
Case involves problems with Diarra’s contract with Lokomotiv Moscow in 2014, his desire to move to Belgian club Charleroi, and FIFA’s stance on the subsequent resolution and outcomes. The court has ruled against FIFA and the unintended consequences could be far-reaching and have the potential to alter the balance of power in professional football dramatically, much more so than Bosman itself.
The status quo surrounding the transfer market and players contracts may now be coming to an end and the upshot could be that players will be able to give notice and walk away from their contracts at any time, just like any other employee in a business.
Bosman changes in 1995 resulted in so much power being put in the hands of players and agents – this Diarra ruling, if completely implemented, could make Bosman look like small beer.
Imagine if there were no transfer fees and no binding contracts. What would be the use of any agreed undertaking if a player could up and leave at any time? In business most employees give a period of notice when they find a new job and inform their current employer – that may not be the case in football – supposing a player gets injured during a notice period, it would not be inconceivable that his prospective new employer would suspend their offer until fitness was proven- therefore notice periods would be a hindrance to deals being concluded and soon become obsolete.
What would become of clubs like Celtic, who have a sell-on model at the heart of their business, with no fees to be had and star players leaving for bigger salaries elsewhere ‘at the drop of a hat’? The only way to get a player would be to offer a bigger salary than he/his agent could get elsewhere and of course the player could walk away a month later if a better offer cropped up. How could a team be built under those circumstances?
Clubs like Man Utd, Chelsea, Man City, Tottenham, Newcastle have spent £billions in transfer fees in the last ten years – Man Utd alone have paid out £1b since Fergie retired. Of course they have all had inward fees, but where does all that money go if there is no transfer business? The likelihood is that the majority will go straight into the pockets of managers, coaches, players and agents. The £1m/£2m/£3m per week player may be closer to becoming a reality than we think.

BOSMAN ON STEROIDS
Well, that’s a very interesting take
You’d have to imagine that Michael Nicholson was well aware of the possibility of this ruling
It seems people are at a loss as to the exact implications of the ruling and that it is really down to the way FIFA are going to interpret the ruling and modify their system…
….[FIFA]“The ruling only puts in question two paragraphs of two articles of the Fifa regulations on the status and transfer of players, which the national court is now invited to consider.”
that is going to be the cruix of the matter.
It’s flummoxed me like most but my take is quite different from yours
From my none to knowledgeable and laymans approach, it looks like this…
Say a player is transferred from Scotland to Russia for 5 mn, he signs a four year deal
The relationship breaks down after two years, the player wants to go “home” and the Club don’t really want him anymore.
So he’s mutualled
So he goes back to Scotland, but if he signs for a Scottish Club then the Russian Club still have the players registration
The Scottish Club ask the Russian Club for the players registration
The Russian Club say sure… that’s 5 mn please
Now, that’s the sticking point
The way I read it, the Club can’t hang on to the players registration when the contract has been ended.
The registration goes back to FIFA once the contract is ended, who must. (all being well) transfer the players’ registration to allow him to play for the Scottish Club.
Now obviously there are huge implications but if the Club and player honour their contract there is no real change that I can see.
However, if a player wants a transfer it will be much more difficult for the Club to refuse, though as long as there is a valid contract between the player and the Club, the Club can still ask for a transfer fee for the registration.

Well as you suggest, BR wasn’t going to say anything different.
Now many have criticised sticking to our usual game plan, yet no one has suggested what different players we would use and how we would set up those players to get a result , we only have the players retained and recruited to be coached and developed to play one way.
This was my take before the game…
https://sentinelcelts.com/2024/09/30/blinded-by-the-lights/#comment-350634
The only criticism I’d make was that Brendan was too loyal to Kyogo and Greg
Yet the replacements, Idah and Valle had not played much with the team, so he was between a rock and a hard place.
When Brendan first came in back in 2016, we had an invincible run, in fact our first domestic loss was almost a year and a half after BR&Co started.
Yet that was a 4-0 drubbing at Tynecastle
It didn’t stop us winning trebles though
This season we break the all time Scottish League record for clean sheets, then we go to Germany and concede seven in one game
What does that tell you!?
Well it tells me that we didnt become a bad team overnight, the manager talked of resilience, bouncing back, being better for the experience and that’s what needs to happen
The leaders within the group are going to have to pull the team together and make sure they get better.
The high press is as good a defensive system as any, as Dortmund BVB proved on Tuesday evening.
It wasn’t the plan that was wrong, it was the way it was implemented, we don’t need a new plan, we need to get better at implementing our current plan.
BR talked about making individual players better and that’s the only way we are going to improve as a team.
Yes, it might never be good enough in this current football environment to beat Dortmund or Atalanta away, yet if we stick with it, and if we improve, it may be good enough to get a result against Brugge and Leipzig at home and Young Boys away and if this UCL campaign is going to be a success then that’s what we are going to have to do.
The issue for me is it’s very difficult to have a clear dialogue about the manager, tactics, results on the blog…
There is to much “noise” created…
There is at best an undercurrent and at worse an agenda against our manager
It’s been highlighted by many, how the lead articles on CQN this year has treat our manager
Yet it is not in an open and transparent way.
He is defended on these pages for sure, yet the agenda is clear to see and they try different ways to discredit our manager…
After a poorish start – Chris Davies was the brains behind our success, then when things improved a kite was flown for Adam Sadler, yet as that didn’t fly other tactics were found.
Of course after the Dortmund drubbing they’re having a field day
They’ll tell us, Brendan is a poor tactician and not up to the management and coaching skills of Gordon Strachan or Neil Lennon
Of course Neil has a front seat as co-commentator at Dortmund and wasted no time having a dig.
So how far up the food chain does this bitterness go?
Any perceived failings at Liverpool or Leicester have been highlighted, any successes ignored
I’m glad Brendan stuck up for himself in that Presser, reminded everyone that Leicester beat Chelsea in the FA Cup final, before Chelsea went and won the Champions League
So what then – well we are told our manager lacks humility
Again, working on the perception thing…
Arrogance…
Ego…
Well, I get that “pride is a sin” thing, and modesty is a virtue.
But since when has humility been the hallmark of a great football manager?
No, we must continue on through the season with the same game plan, and see Dortmund for the blip it was, a large blip sure, lessons need to be learned for sure – but If we keep faith in process in my ‘umble opinion we shall make the play-offs.

Please pass on my best wishes and appreciation to your son and the other members.
I’m afraid I was a wee bit anti-social when I got there. We were 2;1 down when I left my hotel and by the time I made it to the right McLean’s Pub (there are 2 of them quite close to each other) we were 3:1 down. I was suffering a head cold caused, I would say by the fierceness of air conditioning on North American trains and buses, and was drinking coke near the back of the crowd with only a Barca supporter for company. I didn’t want to spread my lurgi and add to the misery of a 7:1 defeat and I left quietly speaking with only a few Celtic supporters briefly.
Nevertheless, I want to say how appreciative I am of those guys who provide opportunities for “tourists” like myself to piggy back on their efforts and watch a game in the company of similarly minded folk. I hate watching in neutral company and being pitied when there’s a bad (understatement) result. It was much more re-assuring to see folk as shocked and disappointed as I was by this result.
I hope there’s a next time and I get the chance to see us winning in their company. Please pass on my appreciation.

Obviously ‘the dust hasn’t settled yet’ – the full ruling will be handed down today.
Regarding EU law, I absolutely take your point, however if this judgement sticks and is adopted by FIFA/UEFA, then we will have no alternative but to fall into line. Yes it will be challenged by the big boys and maybe delayed – we wait and see HH
CHAIRBHOY on 5TH OCTOBER 2024 5:27 AM
Note your points and let’s hope it is not so far-reaching, however I well remember in 1995 when Bosman surfaced – many at that time never envisaged the change it would eventually bring. It kick-started the rise and rise of the agents, gave such power and wealth to the players and of course sent wages and transfer fees through the roof.
Maheta Molango, of the Professional Footballers Association, himself a successful sports lawyer, said the Diarra ruling made a broader point, “demonstrating again that football cannot behave like it does not have to work within the same employment laws that apply to any other industry”.
We wait and see HH
So, turns out the pragmatic defensive tactical masterclass against Barcelona allowed 24 attempts, while the gung-ho disastrous failure against Dortmund only allowed 16. Seems strange that the “better” defensive approach would give up MORE chances.
If we had restricted Barcelona to 6 or 7 shots I could kind of get the argument for playing that way, but if you are allowing more chances and relying on the opposition being wasteful or for your keeper to bail you out that’s just not going to work very often.
Three of the goals came as a result of attacking players making mistakes in or just outside their own box. Not what you would expect from a team that were “too attacking”!
Glass2/3
Personally I would prefer Celtic winning v superior opposition like we did v Barca 2-1 or Man Utd 1-0 or Milan 2-1 to get serially humped like BR teams do.
The manager seems intent on doubling down on this which is fine as we have an easy ish qualifying route this year in a different format. He should succeed given resource invested compared to opponents. He may fail again though and maybe lessons can be learned.
Clearly you are happy with the record defeats we have suffered under this manager . Some are not.
Chairboy
We play Young Boys at home and not away. Surely we should win that ?
Zagreb away is maybe more tricky as they sacked their coach for losing in a similar way in Germany but to the side who are top of the German league and not 5th.
Clearly Chris Davies is showing his ability to manage a team at Birmingham. After inheriting a shitshow he seems to be doing pretty well. Including Iwata who could have been the type we would have benefited from on Tuesday.
Equally re Sadler. There is no doubt our form improvement coincided with his appointment last winter. Likewise the managers decision to turn up at Lennoxtown.
