We spoil the league

Illustrating the very high regard the business community and people of Barcelona hold Celtic fans, one of the city’s top restaurants, Cinc Sentis have donated lunch for two towards our annual charity causes.

I am assured by our resident food critic (WDH), Cinc Sentis is a fabulous dining experience.  The auction has just gone live – so get a low bid in early – and ends Sunday.  If you’re heading to Barcelona next week, or anytime thereafter, get your eBay bid in here.

Many thanks to Cinc Sentis and WDH.

Read lots yesterday about the vast majority of people in Scotland missing the ‘Old Firm’ games.  Trying hard to inoculate myself against any “bravado” I really don’t see this.  The edge we used to feel when going into the final minutes of a game needing a goal is no longer there, but I’m really not sure that edge is healthy or necessary.

More than this, I don’t know a single fan from another Premiership club who regrets the liquidation of Rangers, or feels their life is enhanced by the presence of Celtic.  Everyone is aware of the harsh reality – we spoil the league.

We do, of course, sell copy, as did the liquidated lot.

I’d guessed that it might have something with Charlotte, the spider from Charlotte’s web, and her gift of being able to save the pig’s life, by writing messages in her web, that drew the attention of a growing number of people. No-one seemed concerned with who wrote the messages, or where they came from – all that mattered was that the message was there, in the web (internet?).

From the Daily telegraph- ewing grahame

The economic gulf between Celtic and Rangers widened on Thursday with the clubs’ share prices facing contrasting fortunes.

It was a particularly satisfying day for Dermot Desmond, the Irish billionaire businessman who became the majority shareholder at Parkhead when he bought out Fergus McCann, who had helped rescue the club from the brink of bankruptcy five years earlier, in 1999.

Thursday was one to savour for Desmond because it was the first time in those 14 years that the increase in the value of his interest in Celtic would allow him to realise a profit. Not that Desmond is of a mind to sell but, were he to offload his shareholding this morning, he would find himself £2  million better off.

As a consequence of that boost, Celtic’s market value climbed to £95.7  million, an estimation which sees them regarded by the markets as worth nearly four times as much as Rangers.

However, while Celtic’s share price rose to 76.5p on the AIM London Stock Exchange, Rangers’ price sank to a new low of 39.5p.

By extension, it means that Rangers is currently worth £26.3 million.

Charles Green, the chief executive who acted as the front man for anonymous investors who bought the assets of Rangers after the club sank into administration and liquidation, made many preposterous statements, from claims of links to the Dallas Cowboys to talk of a £25 million transfer war chest for manager Ally McCoist. Few, however, could compare to his boast in July 2012 that, within a year, Rangers would have a stronger bank balance than Celtic.

Green, having bought his shares for 1p, will still make a handsome profit on his outlay. Ordinary supporters, meanwhile, have seen the worth of their investment plummet. Rangers raised £22.2 million from their share issue last year by selling ordinary shares at 70p. They began trading on Dec 19, and by close of business that day, the price had gone up to 76p.

Unfortunately, the price of shares has abseiled down the ratings since then, they are worth almost 50 per cent less in under 12 months as Rangers have been rattled by internecine warfare.

In that time they have gone through three chairmen, three chief executives and as many nomads (nominated advisers). That instability, allied to the fact that the club announced in October that they had posted a loss of £14  million for the year ending June 30, has not generated confidence in the City.

While Celtic have benefited from Champions League revenue in the last two seasons (and are also guaranteed to win the title next season), Rangers face an uncertain financial future.

Rebel shareholders Malcolm Murray, Paul Murray, Scott Murdoch and Alex Wilson have placed a motion proposing their election to the board – plus the removal of financial director Brian Stockbridge – at what will be a combative annual general meeting at Ibrox in 13 days.

Malcolm Murray, forcibly removed as chairman in May, told a meeting of supporters in Belfast on Monday that Rangers could be back in administration by Easter should he and his partners lose the vote at the meeting.

“I personally think that the club is in danger if we don’t get a win here,” he said. “I don’t see how it’s going to be funded. The official statement from the last fans meeting with the current board said that they would have £1  million cash left in April.

“They have spent quite a lot of that already in payouts, so I don’t know how much longer it will be before it runs out – probably before Easter if things don’t change dramatically or unless they have investors lined up, which they haven’t said they have.”

Isnt life much quieter without Charlotte? I wonder where Charlotte has gone. I miss Charlotte.

I hope she returns with more revelations.

I wonder how many folks in the world know who Charlotte really is and I hope that one day the world has enough morales that the true identity can be revealed.

    Is charlotte a whistleblowing tim

Is charlotte a disgruntled hun out to settle scores

Is charlotte a new sevconian with a clean broom to sweep clean

Is Charlotte the googly eyed one who taped a lot of calls

As I pondered this question about Charlottes identity, I started to wonder why she was called Charlotte and not for example “Paddy Ma Bhoy” or “huns for justice” or simply “tell tale tit, yer mammy canny knit”

Why chose the name Charlotte? What is the significance behind the name Charlotte?

  11. The death of Nelson Mandela reminds me of his release from prison and the impact it had on some of my former workmates. As most people will remember it was the biggest news story of the day and his release was covered live on BBC1 on a Sunday afternoon. I went into work the next day and over-heard a heated discussion amongst a group of my workmates and Nelson Mandela’s name was being quoted frequently. I was surprised as this particular group had never struck me as being particularly politically aware and I thought it a bit odd that they were actively discussing his release. However, it turned out that they were having a good old fashion bitch about some old guy they’d never heard of getting out of prison and how disgraceful it was that the BBC had postponed or delayed the ominbus edition of Eastenders to cover this “non-event”. One of them felt so aggrieved that she phoned the BBC to complain. The BBC complaints team must have had a good laugh that day.

I think there’s a clue is the fact that SDM was based at the Charlotte address and the use of ‘fakeover’, suggesting it was a fake takeover.

SDM still involved in the deep background?

As was suggested his silence in everything that has happened is deafening. You’d have thought that some kind of ‘off the record’ chat along the lines of “I never thought this would happen” might have surfaced by now. Not a word.

    I find that curious.

I spoke to an Oldco player who told me about Souness just after losing the 89 Cup final….’he came into the dressing room in a rage and threw away his runners up medal. That mob next door (Celtic team singing in the bath)wont be laughing when they see who I’m signing on Monday. No one, apart from Oldco directors, McMurdo and Petite merde himself, was aware that Judas was going to RFC1872.

On McNee..I spoke to him in person once and was surprised at how eloquent he came across. This was just before the mcCann takeover and he was totally negative about it, calling the 60k seater idea a stupid move. I asked him why he was so anti-Celtic in his media work he replied..’I am totally neutral when on radio, or on the camera gantry’. So I asked him what his thoughts were on the abuse hurled at him from the ‘suits’ near the Ibrox gantry (his admission in an article the week previous)….he said something like ‘its water off a ducks back after getting it for years over there’.

Something of a paradox here. On the one hand, we don’t want minute’s silence to mark Thatcher’s death and sensibly (for once) we aren’t forced to have one. Why then should the zombies be forced to have one to mark the passing of someone they clearly have no respect for? If they want to demonstrate how out of touch they are with the rest of world opinion, why shoud anyone stop them?

If such a thing goes ahead it is on a par with a minutes silence for likes of Martin McGuiness.

I would seriously consider withdrawing my support for our club, in its present state, should such a disgusting act take place.”

“what is the difference between what Mandela did and what Bin Laden did”

  30. Glasgow City Council (or District Council as was) must be commended for the stance they took in support of Nelson Mandela in the face of fierce opposition from Thatcher’s Govt and big business.

In granting Mandela the Freedom of Glasgow and changing the name of Royal Exchange Place to Nelson Mandela Place, the city leaders sent a powerful message to both sides in South Africa that we were aware of what was happening and whose side we were on.
