We stand alone

1204

If you live long enough you get to hear or read just about everything. Today some in the old media are telling us Celtic and Rangers (sic) are both chasing a soon-to-be out of contract Manchester United player. The way it used to work is an agent would fly into Glasgow to see Celtic or Rangers, and make sure the other club had an option on the player their rivals were pursuing.

Anyone who thinks Newco can rival Celtic for a footballer had better consult their medication. The rules have all changed, in Glasgow, we stand alone.

Final shout for the ITUC’s 22nd minute Fifa protest tomorrow.

Today’s CQteN raffle winner, of a signed Celtic strip, is John McDonald, from table 36. If it’s the John McDonald I’ve just emailed, congratulations… If not, we’ll find you.

Today is World Down Syndrome Day. For too long those with Down’ have been stigmatised, shown a lack of human respect, or worse. The ‘does he take sugar’ days were not so long ago. World Down Syndrome Day is a about raising awareness and changing our perceptions.

Have to say I’m enjoying the Aberdeen fans’ ‘Peter Pawlett Baby’ campaign. Human League’s ‘Don’t you want me baby’ has flown up the charts on the back of delirious Aberdeen fans, celebrating their position as one of Scotland’s top two. Crazy stuff like this is how football clubs grow.

For all those who have supported Marys’ Meals over recent weeks and months, here’s a cheery video from them, with a little help from Pharrell Williams.

Seville – The Celtic Movement is another cheery wee thing.

“Somewhere around 5am and Glasgow airport is only open for Seville flights and is a sea of green and white. I’ve 80 Euros, my passport, boarding pass and a ticket in my shorts, Celtic top on, no baggage of any description. The happiest queue of all time has formed.”

Paul 67. it was really heartening to see you reference “World Down Syndrome” day. To my great shame I was unaware of this.

As previous posts have mentioned and its worth reiterating, in general our NHS is a wonderful institution but we must fight and remain vigilant to protect it.

All the talk on here about battles and past empires is history ( Although they should never be forgotten and make great debating ) but right now as our population grows older the fight to maintain the NHS is a battle that cannot be lost regardless of finance.

If you catch this message, thank you.

That video is simply the most wonderful thing I’ve seen for a long long time. I was smiling from ear to ear, yet tearful at the same time. What a humbling, inspiring, tear jerking, smile bringing piece of film.

I’ve tried to express above my feelings, but can’t find the proper words to do it justice.

God bless all who have helped make this happen. The memory of that film will live with me forever.

  6. I cried when I read about CQTEN I admired the endeavor of so many but my biggest disappointment was because March will be remembered for CQTen and not because Celtic were competing for a trophy in their own stadium

    Tear stained regrets !

  7. Just a wee bit of factual info re Jews in Ireland.

The 1936 census shows 3,749 people declaring themselves as Jews whilst the 1946 census shows it to be 3,907 an increase of 4.2%, the largest increase since 1911, achieved during the height of Nazi terror in mainland Europe.

I would note that the 1946 census preceded De Valera’s decision to allow 150 Jewish children entry in 1948 (as mentioned by kitalba earlier), and, therefore, did not include that number though it may have included the 100 children brought to Clonyn Castle by Solomon Schonfeld.

I could not quickly locate a British or Scottish or Norwegian equivalent figure to show whether the Republic’s (at the time, the Free State’s) response was disproportionately low.

Interestingly, the numbers of Jews in the ROI continued to decline rapidly in the 50s, 60s 70s and 80s and has only climbed again since the 90s. Whether this was due to latent anti-semitism or the emigration forces that affected all in Ireland, during this time, is open to debate.

There was undoubtedly anti-semitism from the Blueshirt crowd before, during and after the war. Whether it was any worse than the Blackshirt activity in the UK mainland and the Billy Bhoys movement in Scotland is another argument, I don’t care to begin just now.

I would note that, whatever effect War Fever had in putting British Nazi voices at a peep, dissipated quite quickly as they were back in action translating anti-Jewish bigotry into anti-coloured bigotry, a decade after the end of the war, and their numbers increased throughout the 60s and 70s before increasing bourgeoisation turned them into UKIP members.

Good to see some feedback on Seville book – the story TTT referred to is hilarious.

Jimmci – CQN does better if you order from the blog, next after that from the club shops. Thanks for buying it – we said last week if anyone is not delighted with the book they can have their money back!

Ernie – see if you go on the rangers sites, they are all saying ‘the anti-protestant racism that permeates Scottish life.’ Personally I have never witnessed either one in my life, and I don’t know anyone who has. Cue a torrent of people…….

I guess when someone lives their life in tribal terms, they will see or seek out what they regard as discrimination.

Personally I feel the only tribalism worth bothering about is the war being perpetrated by the 0.1% on the 99.9%, trying to reduce us to drone worker slaves.

    ………………………………………..

Nonsense. Many of us who post on here are of an age when we had to disclose what school we went to on job application forms. This was very often followed by a ‘ we regret to inform you that your application has been unsuccessful’ letter. Please spare us your amateur philosophying.

  24. Bom dia.

A bit slow in posting today (had to take the 4yr old “Celtic Ninja” to school this morning). Hell on last night in the hoose, as he wanted to sleep in the tap he’d been wearing all day.

Anyway, last night’s Libertadores (these games complete round 4 of the group stages).

    Atlético-PR (Bra) 3 Universitario (Per) 0

This one went pretty much to form. Paranã took an early lead, Universitario came out and chased the game, then lost another two goals as a consequence. Third goal was an absolute howler from Universitario keeper, Caceda. And I mean a HOWLER.

A.Paranã now sit joint top of the table with Velez Sarsfield on 9 points, Bolivia’s Strongest trailing on 6. Paranã are at home to Velez next week and will be hoping to seal their place then.

Universitario, still with no goals/points, now officially out of the Libertadores.

Lanús (Arg) 2 Dep Cali (Col) 0

Lanus romped to a two goal lead within 5minutes here and I have to say I wonder if they practiced their second goal on the training ground, or were just lucky? See for yourself here (after about 35secs into the clip)

    Lanus 2 Dep Cali 0

To be fair to Cali they never gave up and kept running at Lanus, but without success. Lanus also missed a penalty late on.

Lanus (currently 4th place with 4pts, behind leaders, Porteño who have 7pts) will be delighted with the points here which keeps them in contention in this tight group.

    Cerro Porteño (Par) 2 O’Higgins (Chi) 1

Porteño’s nickname translates as the “Obero Cyclones” (Obero being the area where their ground is) and they certainly lived up to that name last night when they went two up after only six minutes with goals from Guiza and Dos Santos (pen).

Three minutes after that O’Higgins, Calandria then scored a (soft) penalty and the game looked to explode. However, it fizzled out into a bit of a snooze fest.

So, after a slow start, Porteño starting to look more like the side they have been in previous campaigns and now lead group 3 with 7 points.

Cruzeiro (Bra) 2 Defensor (Urg) 2

A thoroughly enjoyable game (from a neutral’s point of view) this turned out to be.

Cruzeiro were pumped up for this one. None more so than Dagoberto who managed to talk himself into a yellow card due to his “enthusiasm”. On the other side, Cruzeiro had obviously thought the same about Defensor’s, Giorgian de Arrabeceatta, and hoofed him every chance they got (to be fair, he rode it well and kept his cool).

The game (as a lot in the Libertadores are) was marred by chronic time wasting and feigned “injuries” and this all came to a head a minute before half time with the obligatory “stooshie” over a free kick (all it was lacking was a gang of schoolkids chanting “Fight. Fight. Fight”). Anyway when the dust settled two red cards had been issued and Everton (the player, not the team in Liverpool) scored a belter. Stooshie highlights here….

Ma Da’s bigger than your Da. Yeah, but mine’s gotta Alsayshun

Second half, Dagoberto was changed out in a straight swap for the equally lively, Willian (or should, nowadays, that be Will-I-an?) and it was not long before Cruzeiro scored a second thru powerful (and I mean POWERful) striker, Julio Batista.

However, despite countless chances they just couldn’t get a third. That was the cue for (my man) Arrabeceatta to play a one two off the ref and feed Felipe Godoy thru to make it 2-1. Then in the 94th minute Defensor equalized (another great Arrabeceatta thru ball)leaving the Minerão stadium with 40,000+ VERY irate “Cruzeireneses” and about 50 ecstatic Defensor fans (wonder if there were any windaes left in their bus?).

Result of it all is Cruzeiro (who, I think, were tournament joint favourites) languishing in third place with 4 points behind Defensor (7) and U.Chile (9).

It’ll be a shame if both teams don’t go thru as there are some cracking players to watch here.

    Unión Española(Chi) 1 San Lorenzo (Arg) 0

Never saw this (as I was watching the Cruzeiro game) but what little I did see, it looked scrappy. Española striker, Gustavo Canales exploiting poor defending to header the only goal of the game.

Now with 6 points in group two Union face leaders Botafogo (7) in the Maracnã for their next game. On the other hand, San Lorenzo now in bottom spot (4pts) have a tricky away to Inde del Valle (who play at altitude on a pitch which would struggle to pass as playable in Welfare League).

Finally, Mario Bellini, Brasil’s first ever World Cup winning captain passed away yesterday. Bellini is/was a man thought so highly of in Brasil, that they erected a statue of him outside the main gate at Maracanã. Be nice to think that BRTH’s auld fellah and Mario are sitting, looking down smiling and having a good chin wag about the days when “proper fitba” was played.

Two incredibly uplifting posts, I’m really glad that you both took the trouble to post them.

TTT, I had to laugh at you saying that the wee yin can still be a bit troublesome at times. Many years ago I did voluntary work in a school for children with mental and physical disabilities, including several with Downs.

I spent quite a bit of time in what was called the ‘life skills’ class and often catalogues were used to teach them about clothing etc. Well, there was one wee guy, what a character he was, always smiling, cheeky and up to something!

I came back from my break one morning and he was being remrimanded by one of the senior staff. It wasn’t my place to interfere so I proceeded to deal with the other children.

Around an hour later the head of the school and the member of staff who’d been giving the wee guy into trouble called me out of the room much to my surprise. What they told me was an even greater shock!!

The wee chancer had cut out pictures from the lingerie section of the catalogues and had been caught showing them to the other weans in the class, adding that,

    “These are all my girlfriends!”
