We stand alone

1204

If you live long enough you get to hear or read just about everything. Today some in the old media are telling us Celtic and Rangers (sic) are both chasing a soon-to-be out of contract Manchester United player. The way it used to work is an agent would fly into Glasgow to see Celtic or Rangers, and make sure the other club had an option on the player their rivals were pursuing.

Anyone who thinks Newco can rival Celtic for a footballer had better consult their medication. The rules have all changed, in Glasgow, we stand alone.

Final shout for the ITUC’s 22nd minute Fifa protest tomorrow.

Today’s CQteN raffle winner, of a signed Celtic strip, is John McDonald, from table 36. If it’s the John McDonald I’ve just emailed, congratulations… If not, we’ll find you.

Today is World Down Syndrome Day. For too long those with Down’ have been stigmatised, shown a lack of human respect, or worse. The ‘does he take sugar’ days were not so long ago. World Down Syndrome Day is a about raising awareness and changing our perceptions.

Have to say I’m enjoying the Aberdeen fans’ ‘Peter Pawlett Baby’ campaign. Human League’s ‘Don’t you want me baby’ has flown up the charts on the back of delirious Aberdeen fans, celebrating their position as one of Scotland’s top two. Crazy stuff like this is how football clubs grow.

For all those who have supported Marys’ Meals over recent weeks and months, here’s a cheery video from them, with a little help from Pharrell Williams.

Seville – The Celtic Movement is another cheery wee thing.

“Somewhere around 5am and Glasgow airport is only open for Seville flights and is a sea of green and white. I’ve 80 Euros, my passport, boarding pass and a ticket in my shorts, Celtic top on, no baggage of any description. The happiest queue of all time has formed.”

  3. Been dipping in and out of “Seville” and a wee memory popped into my head. It is the only sad one I have. As I was leaving the stadium, a young English lhad (well, young to me) started to chat. He lived in Norfolk (or somewhere like that) and had only seen Celtic in the flesh 3 times and we had lost every time. He was blaming himself for the defeat and he was inconsolable. He had come all the way on his own, knowing no one; we had lost and he felt he was responsible. I hope he has recovered now and looks back on the whole experience with a bit of joy. After all, he can always tell his children: I was there.

I was involved as a volunteer with a club, The Sundown Cafe, for hadicapped children in the Helenburgh area in the mid 80’s. There were a few Down syndrone kids amonst the group. One year they organised a youth exchange with a similar group from Portugal.

As a surprise for the Portugese group it was decided to put on a display of traditional Scottish country dancing and so we approached the local country dance group who agreed to provide someone to teach the youth country dancing.

Now the important thing here is where I live, Helensburgh, parts of which can be very snobby(being kind guys) and upper class. Well on the first day of lessons in strolled this matrony lady that spoke just like the queen and demanded all our attention as she explained the intricacies of Scottish Country dancing and the importance of timing and phrasing.

Us volunteers just looked at each other wondering what she was doing, did she understand the group she was to teach?

Anyway on she went till eventually she put on a record to explain a particular point-

“one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight”, she called out as an accompaniment to the beat of the particular Scottish country classic. Then from the back of the room “nine, ten”.

No, no, no, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 she shouted. “nine, ten” again came the reply from the back of the room.

Again she did the count and again came the reply “nine, ten”. By this time her face was contorted with rage and she almost lost it completely. Then this young guy with Downs stepped forward and said “I can count to ten, you want me to teach you?” The whole room erupted into uncontrolable laughter and I swear the laughter went on for about 10mins, it was one of the funniest things I’ve ever witnessed.

The young guy was Billy, he has Downs syndrome but he seemed to take great delight in causing this commotion and I actualy thought for a moment that he knew what he was doing.

Any news on the story that NL was goin to be havin a chat with the Lierse coach, Menzo about the slappin of Tony Watt’s face, allegedly?

Speakin from experience, a face slap is unique insult… it dinae hurt much, but it carries the spite of disdain. The only adequate retort being a punch in the gub.

Now, Wattie might need a metaphorical kick up the arse, but if he was my son, and it wis true, Menzo would be crappin the leather from my very fine walking boot for a month.

  11. Seems to have been yet another day for an excessively bitter historical debate by the same about the same!

A lot of firsts quoted – progress of a sort?

c+cm2 a few one of which – concentration camps in Boer war. Correct as far as I was taught and have read, no one else has admitted to this yet or been found out.

Also a big one as taught by last history teacher the first socialist one – compensation paid to the defeated.

And there’s was me thinking what was the point of winning ?

BMCUW – not sure if this was a statement or irony.

The first known genocide – Tasmanian aboriginals wiped of the face of the earth by the British Empire.

Now that’s a heck of a statement!! If you had said caused by the expansion of the BE okay. Considering up to 90% of all first contact peoples by europeans (which would have included any possible Irish presence) died from disease. Mind you this was Gods will (fault) opening up the new land for the chosen ones. Lands of milk and honey!!

Also the remaining Tasmanians seem to have become infertile due to vd. Most of what was left fell to the settlers. Now was everyone of those settlers English or could there have been a couple of Irish amongst them, I seem to remember quite a few being pumped out to Oz. The rest were sent to island reserves for their own safety which wasent the case.

Somebody else has said most countries would have done the same at the same point in time and world history seems to bear this out.

I don’t know to how many future generations this bitterness is to be passed onto but some wallow!!

    Poor post.

Not one, including SFTB, or anybody on this blog can change my political views. You misjudged me If you think I’m that weak person. I can discuss things with anyone who is looking for the truth.

As for Putin and Buchanan. If you think pro-gay , or anti-gay makes the person good or bad and include faith in that, you do us Christians disservice. I learned that God loves us all: Christians, pagans, gays , blacks and white. The only thing he does not like is sin. He never condemns the man but condemns his sins.

Did you know, there are circa 25 000 genes in every human person? Only 250 of them determine color of the skin, height, gender, composition of the ear or the eye.

Isn’t the world of geo-politics a fine place for ethics to flourish? We are backing the Taliban in Syria and fighting them in Afghanistan. Can we not go back to our old Cold War outsourcing practices and just get Syria to fight Afghanistan and we can supply both sides with our deadly toys?
