We were mocked for Jozo, a stunning signing

323

The siege mentality which Celtic endured two years ago now feels like a different world. The pursuit of £3.5m defender Jozo Simunovic was a significant statement of intent, but even that was mocked by many now close to the club. A critical assessment from a Balkan writer for The Guardian was enough for the club’s critics to tell us how ridiculous Celtic were.

For months I endured one character repeatedly imply we had bought a crock who would never complete a season. This story had what all good conspiracy theories have, a curious fact which, when revealed, was enough to inspire fantasists.

Jozo was injured when Celtic signed him. The club sent him to London for an assessment from the top man available. The verdict was clear: the injury would heal, but while personal medical details are kept private, speculation was rife.

The truth is we did remarkably well recruiting Jozo. If he wasn’t injured, we may have been priced out of the market, but we scouted him (a John Park player), got the best medical advice available and put money on the table, while others read The Guardian and pondered knee injuries.

Many have spent the last two weeks marvelling at the tacking ability of Jozo.

Lisbon Lions Raffle
20170510_092803

Last year we got this retro Celtic top signed at an event by several Lions: Willie Wallace, Tommy Gemmell, John Hughes and Charlie Gallacher. Willie has told us he’ll ask the others to add their names, when he’s over later this month. I intend pinning the Original Holy Goalie before then. Former captain, Paul McStay, was also kind enough to add his name.

We’re raffling the top, all proceeds will be spent on the Lions, or descendants, where appropriate. The objective is to give the Lions and their families a memento to mark the 50th anniversary of their greatest achievement. Many no longer have their medals, strips or keepsakes from that era.

£2 each, you can buy a bucket-load HERE, if you like. I guarantee you the winner will cherish their prize.

  1. Good Morning CQN

    14 days to go.

The weather today in Lisbon will be Showery, and scattered thunderstorms are forecast. The high temperature for today is, again, a very appropriate ’67 degrees

When I was stickin up for Ronny Deila, David was just saying that Ronny didnae have the players with him.

  3. On the subject of Cup Final Tickets, it’s looking like Aberdeen will sell out their allocation of tickets.

They had sold around 75% yesterday, and that was limited to season ticket holders.

Interestingly, tickets in all areas allocated to them from half-way line round to huns end were available from the time they went on sale, so even if they didn’t sell out, there was no chance of unsold tickets being made available to Celtic fans.

Wiipe the floor with them tomorow night, Celtic, and then do the same again in a couple of weeks please.

  4. I’d like to extend my best wishes to Mouldy, Vmhan and their Celtic Cyclist Crew who embark for Lisbon this morning, a truly phenomenal effort!

  16. Aberdeen season book holders have the privelage of buying two tickets each. They are selling all sections so the chances of them handing back some are goosed because of segregation issues.

The only likely chance of more tickets to Celtic are corporate and debenture seats in the top tier south stand.

My money is on 1000 unoccupied seats in the Aberdeen areas come cup final day because simply the SFA bawsed it up.

If I didn’t have one I would buy an Aberdeen ticket in the south stand.

    That analysis assumes two things.

    1. That it would assist Craig Whyte’s case if the witness had a more precise recollection of events.

    2. That Craig Whyte’s intention when buying the huns was to save them from financial collapse.

  21. I’ve just been able to dip in and out of the blog these past few days but I want to quickly express my appreciation of all the kind thoughts expressed as we head towards the burial of my mother on Saturday.

Having been spared most of the organisation of my brother’s funeral, I have to say there is a lot involved with the certification of a death and the arranging of a funeral service. I have been to more appointments and fielded more phone calls these past 3 days than I would have had I been at my work. I was up at John Street registering the death on the day after she died and, when I produced her birth certificate, I noted that it was 7 years after her birth that the birth was registered.

Truly there is no word in the Gaeltacht to register the sense of urgency contained in the word “manana”.

Or else, they had a more laid back and human approach to these things.

For all who expressed their sympathies, your words, prayers and sentiments are gratefully received. In honesty, the emotions are much less raw this week. My mother was on the point of being discharged home into palliative care when her body surrendered to all it faced. Apart from laboured breathing, she suffered none of the pain and discomfort that was likely heading her way. We are all grateful that her death was a relatively peaceful one and one that spared suffering.

I would place on record my appreciation of the efforts shown by the Rutherglen care home in which she died, on an interim placement, following hospital discharge, awaiting palliative care supports being in place. The standards of care, attention and , indeed the overall specs of the place, are a credit to South Lanarkshire Council and the staff who provide service there. The bar is raised by establishments lie these and, if we can get a more uniform service provided for everyone who needs nursing care, this is what we need to aspire towards.

And a word for the professionalism and humanity of a funeral service company which does not even attempt to sell you a bells and whistles funeral service but gently nudges you consider what is necessary rather than what is ornate- well I wish most commercial operations I met conducted themselves with that humanity and consideration.

There has been laughter amidst the tears this week and there will be more before the lady is sent to her rest. But I better stop there as I am going into see what state ny work is in this morning before getting back for the wake this evening.

Many thanks for your thoughts and take care of yourself.

P.S. – HT- if you can find the link for Mouldy’s bike run- I promised some PayPal donation which I have not yet done- please re-post it on here

John James is spot on. The original terms of the takeover meant Minty was to be honourary life President. That idea was canned later. Probably when Minty decided to lumber Whyte with the £6m outstanding to Ticketus. He knew the ship would sink and wanted no part of it.

Huge Credit to you for your sacrifices and commitment.

  25. Saint Stivs,

you might be able to get a ticket, but you’re unlikely to be allowed to stay in your seat. Can you imagine watching Celtic score and not celebrating, especially if it’s a tight game ?

Wouldn’t be the first time I’d been removed for being in the ‘wrong end’. i find it impossible to be passive and sit on my hands when watching Celtic.

TD67, I agree – I thing that JJ has encapsulated the machiavellian goings-on at the takeover.

ERNIE LYNCH has (IMHO) rightly assessed the assumptions that less obfuscation from Withey will help Whyte and that he was actually looking (certainly initially) was actually looking to move Der Hun forward but with an extra £10.5M added to the debt burden, that sucked too much money out of the club and killed them.

The more I read about the whole debacle, the more I am convinced that Whyte was a patsy set up to steer the inevitable car crash that Murray and his cohorts didn’t want assigned to them!
