Weah has opportunity, for now

152

St Mirren have earned only 12 points from 21 games this season but one of these came in the 0-0 draw with Celtic at Paisley in September; the champions have a score to settle tonight.  St Mirren rescued a 0-2 deficit against Alloa in the Scottish Cup on Saturday but have suffered five straight league defeats to Kilmarnock, St Johnstone, Motherwell, Aberdeen and Livingston.

Football is not always straightforward, but Brendan Rodgers will demand his players take all three points tonight.

With Odsonne Edouard returning to fitness, Leigh Griffiths on sabbatical and Vakoun Issouf Bayo awaiting clearance, I expect we will see Timothy Weah start tonight, after his scoring debut from the bench on Saturday.  Within a month the striker position is going to be heavily contested, but for now 18-year-old Weah has the ball.  I expect him to make the most of the opportunity.

Enjoy the game.

  1. On the signing of this Ukrainian lad…

With Burke and Weah only temporary, then a permanent wide guy to offer competition on both left and right wing, isn’t really a bad thing.

Brings us back to the same quota really, as when we had Sinclair, Forrest and Paddy.

Lewis Morgan I feel might become another Gary McKay Steven… and carve out a decent Scottish premiership career at likes of Aberdeen. (I say that believing I don’t think the lad has had a fair crack in his favoured position. I’m sure he won player of the year with St Mirren operating wide left. So far I’ve seen Rodgers play him wide right or as N0.10).

    Ok so to summarise…

    * The Fields of Athenry, which contains the lyrics… ‘Against the famine and the Crown, I rebelled…’ is not a rebel song? Presumably because this does not fit the narrative of rebel songs being naughty and all about the ‘Troubles’ ? I don’t know how much more clear it can be that to say ‘I rebelled’!

    * Your survey is as old as the last home game – ok, so ‘Most Celtic fans don’t sing rebel songs, twas ever thus’, wasn’t what you actually meant? Twas ever thus, or going by last Saturday?!

Again, not saying I like the full repertoire of the GB or our away from CP songbook, but we have sung from this genre of song since the beginning.

Personally the chants I find the worst are ‘Build a bonfire’ and the adapted ‘Beautiful Sunday’.

  7. At the end of this season we will most likely be down 10 players due to contacts ending and loan players returning to their own clubs. Everyone and their granny would agree we need a quality rightback asap and that we will need a couple of centrebacks come the summer.

We cant reject quality young players when they become available and are willing to come here from abroad.

  8. Requiring some help / advice.

Purchasing ticket for tonight online via Celtic F.C ticket page.

Once an available seat has been selected, and all details provided. Once I click proceed to check-out. The system doesn’t progress.

    Anyone experienced this before ?

    Any ideas how to proceed.

I do understand I can phone. Which is my next step. Just slightly frustrating the website playing up.

  9. Build a Bonfire is not only crass and unbecoming CFC……it’s also just…..well….crap.

As someone not born into the Catholic Faith I’ve never felt anything other than welcome as a Celtic fan. Perhaps being a reb helps!

Tam McManus. No idea who he is but he’s now in the media putting the boot into Celtic often and hoping it will get him regular headlines. It’s working. His latest proclamation is that we s*** the bed when John McGinn signed for Villa instead of us. Who cares about John McGinn, if we was a real Celtic supporter he would have agreed a deal and signed up, but he never so he’s history. But this TMcM has the potential to be a real pain in the a***, a footballing never was with a grudge against Celtic, the SMSM will lap it up.

    No, to summarise here;

The songs debate now that I’m off my phone which isn’t the best for CQN as we all know

Much older than the internet and was an original Radio Snyde phone in topic in the days of Jimmy Sanderson and Gerry McNee older to than Jock Stein and his plea to the fans away at Dunfermline.

BTW Did you also read my post yesterday on Policing of Celtic fans? It was otherwise well received.

Unusual during a transfer window but I can understand why some Celtic supporters raised the debate on CQN recently, but here goes from my perspective as one who has supported Celtic since he was an amoeba, and was mildly surprised at the chants that are most definitely classed as sectarian

There are no rebel songs that sectarian in the dictionary definition of the word, however a lot of Scottish people class any Rebel song as sectarian the few court cases that have arisen lead to ‘breach of the peace’ and don not procescute on the grounds of ‘sectarianism’ Generally speaking because the rebel songs some Celtic fans sing are simply not sectarian.

i.e. I.R.A not sectarian given that it had non Catholic founders and members like Wolfe Tonne ( no less )

Most ‘rebel songs’ are offensive ( to some ) including probably Rod Stewart I’m sure, he likes ‘Grace’ and released it as a ‘love song’ single, but would curl his toes like most, especially when he heard a Celtic fan singing “ Ooo Aaahhh Up The Raa “ then again, maybe like most sensible people he would ignore it and carry on supporting Celtic regardless

But if you sang it in Sauchiehall St, chances are you’d can bet your boots you’d be up before the beak in jig time.

    * Your survey is as old as the last home game – ok, so ‘Most Celtic fans don’t sing rebel songs, twas ever thus’, wasn’t what you actually meant? Twas ever thus, or going by last Saturday?!

Yes, it was what I meant not just last Saturday, that was merely a benchmark of the last time I was in Celtic Park

When the Jungle belted out Sean South or the Soldiers Song frequently or any other ditty classed as Rebel with me joining in the choir, few if any around the ground joined in, maybe they did in spirit but not out loud.

Sectarian Songs ( Or Songs/ Chants definately considered considered ‘sectarian’ in Scotland )

    ………………..Orange ████……………..

That was toe curling when original Rainjurz were still alive, and it was directed at ‘Cheer up Walter Smith? and from a Celtic FC perspective, a club that Willie Maley told us in nineteen canteen that it was not about race creed or colour never mind wee daftie Orangemen?

  19. Tis freezing out there! And I’m only 8½ miles from the Celtic Park centre circle, although admittedly about 600 feet higher up.

  20. Newsnow yesterday reported that there are a lot of complaints in Scotland that English football ie theEPL is getting more coverage on local TV than the home game. Thank goodness RTE god rid of the EPL about five years ago.

  21. Must admit I wrote a totally sectarian song in the aftermath of the Celtic Hearts Cup Semi. That was the day the Hertz fans disrespected the minutes silence for the Pope. Coming out of the game a few Hertz Boys got themselves in the wrong place, there was no actual violence but the verbals were getting tasty and the Hertz Boys quite wisely vaulted a railing and ran like Hell.

Anyway next day at the Airport with little to do the Devil found work for my Idle Hands and I sat down and wrote a song about the events of the previous day.

It became a standard favourite amongst my fellow Tipp based Celts and was aired in Dublin, Belfast & Glasgow as well as in local Hostelries.

  22. If brexit pulls Scotland out of Europe against its will, is that the end of the CL for Celtic ?
