Wee Oscar

613

It’s two and a half years since Oscar’s dad, Stephen ‘Knoxy’ shared the news he’d just received that his three-year-old son had been diagnosed with neuroblastoma, an apparently rare form of childhood cancer.  All the pains and fears of that day, and the years since, came to the fore over the last eight weeks as the disease took hold.  Oscar’s battle ended yesterday.

On this day we should acknowledge the enormous work by so many people to get Oscar the treatment he needed, many of whom would never meet him.  The treatment cost hundreds of thousands of pounds, a daunting figure, but one which was soon met.  Without this fundraising, Oscar would have died in 2012.  Instead, he lived, played and inspired many with his enthusiasm until recent weeks.  His fantastic “Happy Birthday CQN” video message was recorded just two months ago; a gift to this community.

For now, there are no meaningful words for Stephen, Oscar’s mum Leona, sister Izzie and their family and friends, but we will be there for them in the months and years to come.

This disease, in all its forms, is a curse on humanity.  We need more fundraising, more research, more education on its dangers.

Before Sunday’s game against Dundee United you will be able to buy a Celtic FC Foundation badge, to aid work with homelessness in the Glasgow area. Badges cost a minimum donation of £1, a price we can all afford to help our neighbours in most need.

Thanks Sir for putting into words , the thoughts and feelings of many of us on here.

Over the years this fantastic blog has been enhanced by the skills of guys such as yourself , BRTH and ,of course, our host Paul67…..and many more.

Were it not for this blog , I would probably have never heard of Oscar Knox , and the other wonderfully brave kids , whose plight has been championed by great men on here.

I would have been none the wiser , and wouldn’t have shed tears today for a young bhoy I never met. I wouldn’t have had to read today’s post and hundreds of comments , only when I was “safely” on my own , for fear of upsetting my own kids if they saw me crying.

But I’d have been much poorer for not knowing anything about Oscar , as this extraordinary kid truly was , and will remain, an inspiration to us all.

Another poster on here earlier said something about it not being how long we live , but the impact we make while we’re here…..and that quote sums it up beautifully , and is one that will now stay with me forever.

I think I’m all cried out now for tonight , but my heart goes out to his parents , sister , family and friends . I pray they all find the strength to get through the hard times that lie ahead.

God bless Oscar and all his family. RIP bravest bhoy.

    Hail Hail x

Will meet you Godfather, in yer coarner, where you hold court. ;)

  3. A great sense of humility, respect and grief being shown today. We have lost a diamond..but we have gained a bright shining new star. Oscar carried his cross right to the end, he has shown many of us the true path and in turn he and his family have inspired the celtic family on how to treat life. In such a short span he lived his life to the fullest. He took his illness by the horns and fought it right to the end. Some fantastic thoughts and feelings have been written today, all in honor of the bravest of the brave. He had a heart and soul grown men would have been proud of. Sleep well young oscar, your pain is over. Your journey with god and his angels has just begun. Thoughts and prayers for Oscar and his family…

One last point and I’m not a frequent poster…but times like these make feel and know why I’m proud to be in the celtic family. That’s what makes our club so special.

I haven’t posted for over a year due to my own personal problems, which today seem so trivial. I try to have a read every day at some point, but I have to offer my condolences to the family of such a brave wee bhoy!!

Rest in peace and God bless!!

  15. With a heavy heart I want to add something tonight.

A week ago I found in the drawer my Oscar knox wrist band, which I was sure I had given to my five year old nephew at a football match at coloquon park after the bucket collection. He liked the blue and yellow band, and I told him a wee story of a bhoy like him, who might one day play for Celtic because I couldn’t tell him the truth without choking up.

I do known, right now Calvin will play for Celtic, because we dream of this, but when he doesn’t, he will have grown up knowing Oscar Knox was a hero , our hero.

  21. I’ve worn the wrist band this last week, I just wanted too, people have asked what it is and I told the story.

On Sunday I found the Oscar Knox t shirt in the garage, I held it for a while, looking at the bhoy in the picture, I can’t really express my feelings looking at the brave defiant child.

The bucket day was a brilliant day, a glorious endeavour, amongst great individual s and a collective Celtic spirit. I was with vmhan and ton che Dan, our chat and laughs countered by a need to fill them buckets.

Today George, a lurker came to tell me, Oscar has gone.

He couldn’t say it. out, and I couldn’t take it in. I wasn’t numb, I was lost for a while.

I got home later today, my wife and ten year old met me, not Celtic supporters, but they know what it means to me.

Ellie sat on my knee one night as we watched Oscar in the snow. I choked, she hugged, she understood.

In the house we talked some daft stuff, then why wife asked if I was OK, aye why you say that, ellie then gave me a hug. I said Oscar is gone, my wife said we saw it on the news, we all went quiet.

Back in 1981 our family lost our nearly three year old cousin, a beautiful girl, born with heart problems and couldn’t make it.

Oscars brave brave fight made me think of Stephanie every day, and brought it all back.

This young man , you touched us all and it was life affirming that we got to know you.

To Stephen, your wife and daughter, you shared with us a journey, thank you for involving us, this special person will be with us forever.

On Sunday, the Celtic way , would be a fitting place to celebrate the bhoy , Oscar in the shamrock.

    Keep it lit.

I’ve never been to the less than salubrious Naples, but as you point out, it’s the people who make the place. I wouldn’t have thought that East Glasgow is too salubrious, but there’s plenty of people to make up for that.

I hope to meet up with u next season in Glasgow for a wee scoop to toast Oscar

  25. A wee reminder.

“An application to transfer the Scottish Premier League membership from the ‘oldco’ to the ‘newco’ was rejected on a 10–1 vote”.

    Kilmarnock abstained.

” I also thought more time should have been given to Charles Green to develop his proposal for accepting a level of punishment that would have kept Rangers in the SPL.”- Michael Johnston, Kilmarnock chairman.

Afraid I can’t add anything of great significance to the tributes that have been paid to Wee Oscar on this blog all day. Some mesmerising posts. It is also encouraging to hear that football fans from all backgrounds have by and large been united in their tributes and respect to the brave wee soul. Everytime I think about him or see a photo or read a story about Oscar, my eyes well up and I’m known as a bit of a hard hearted bugger. To Oscar’s family, my heart felt condolences. To CQN and the wider Celtic support, you can be very proud of what the Oscar Knox campaign brought out in us.

Humbled by the bravery of one wee bhoy.
