Wee Oscar

613

It’s two and a half years since Oscar’s dad, Stephen ‘Knoxy’ shared the news he’d just received that his three-year-old son had been diagnosed with neuroblastoma, an apparently rare form of childhood cancer.  All the pains and fears of that day, and the years since, came to the fore over the last eight weeks as the disease took hold.  Oscar’s battle ended yesterday.

On this day we should acknowledge the enormous work by so many people to get Oscar the treatment he needed, many of whom would never meet him.  The treatment cost hundreds of thousands of pounds, a daunting figure, but one which was soon met.  Without this fundraising, Oscar would have died in 2012.  Instead, he lived, played and inspired many with his enthusiasm until recent weeks.  His fantastic “Happy Birthday CQN” video message was recorded just two months ago; a gift to this community.

For now, there are no meaningful words for Stephen, Oscar’s mum Leona, sister Izzie and their family and friends, but we will be there for them in the months and years to come.

This disease, in all its forms, is a curse on humanity.  We need more fundraising, more research, more education on its dangers.

Before Sunday’s game against Dundee United you will be able to buy a Celtic FC Foundation badge, to aid work with homelessness in the Glasgow area. Badges cost a minimum donation of £1, a price we can all afford to help our neighbours in most need.

Devastating news about wee Oscar. Thoughts to his family and supporters-Hail,hail.

  3. Numb/sad/proud……all at the same time.

Numb at the loss of one so young.

Sad for his family and many friends.

Proud at the wee mhan’s spirit & fight.

Not many people can evoke such conflicting emotions……Oscar did.

My own son (12) just asked if I was upset.

“Aye it’s wee Oscar son, he doesn’t have to fight anymore.”

” I know dad, we said a prayer for him in RE today.”

“Did you? That’s really good to hear. The guys on CQN are paying their own respects.”

    “Can I read some?”

    “Of course.”

    50 minutes later……………

” He was loved wasn’t he dad?”

    “He was son, he was.”

“But you haven’t said anything dad!”

” I will now Connor, thanks.”

“What are you going to say?”

” Oscar Knox, loved by so many!”

    RIP wee mhan.

Very sad to read this morning’s news about Wee Oscar.

Many have spoken today about Oscar, but , I also want to recognise the truly inspirational way in which his mum, dad , friends, and family fought so hard, to give little Oscar every possible chance.

They should be very proud of themselves and their son.

Is there a preferred address one can send a card and a donation to?? Or a site where the tax can be claimed on?

  6. Heartbroken at the awful news.

I am very privileged to have met Oscar and have some warm, funny and fond memories of each of those occasions. By a fair distance my favourite memory of Oscar is after being humped at the golf by Knoxy at The Carrick, we were making our way outside of Cameron House so I could take photos for the Knox’s of them as a beautiful, loving family with Loch Lomond in the background. Oscar was his usual mischievous self – running away, hiding, trying to get in the lift. I caught him, which wasn’t easy, and lifted him up. He gave me his other trademark – a big kiss (thumbs up being the other), then poked me hard in the face and said “you’re my best friend” in his beautiful Irish accent.

I’m sitting here typing this through tear filled eyes, my own son beside me, how lucky I am. I can’t begin to imagine what Stephen and Leona are going through and wee Izzie who will be lost without her best pal and big brother.

Oscar touched many hearts, many of whom never had the privilege I enjoyed – I’m blessed to have met and spent a little time with such a wonderful wee boy.

    Requiescat in Pace, Oscar

  7. Ive not posted for a while. Deeply saddened with todays news on wee Oscars passing. A couple of weeks ago when I first read the wee man had been admitted to a children’s hospice Im sure I was not alone in fearing the worst. Glad his much suffering is over but still very sad he’s gone. He brought so much people together from all walks of life. My Family’s thoughts are with Stephen Leona & Izzie Knox. Rest in Peace wee man, you never have nor ever will walk alone.

Such a tragedy about Michael. John & Theresa are a lovely couple regulars at the Caritas club in Airdrie. Met them a while back in St Patricks hall having a cuppa tea. John was right chuffed when I told him about Josh.

Your short life laddie has taught us that we need not live in hate but in loving one another.

I hope and pray your legacy lasts in your native land and across the sea.

Please pray for all of us. I’m sure the Big Man will listen to you.
