Week with a sting in the tail

781

The narrative was set for Aberdeen.  After six consecutive league wins without losing a goal, their bubble was burst when they drew with Dundee and St Johnstone, but it hasn’t turned out that way.  They have scored 10 and not conceded in the three league games since.  Out of the Scottish and League Cups, their entire focus is on beating teams less resourceful than them in the league, which is everyone apart from Celtic.

Despite Celtic’s impressive ability to collect points dating back several months, Aberdeen are hanging in there, a remarkable achievement.   The only thing which separates the teams are Celtic’s two 2-1 wins in their previous meetings this season.  From Saturday afternoon Aberdeen’s complete focus will be on their visit to Celtic Park on Sunday.

By contrast, Celtic will return to Glasgow early Friday morning after their trip to Milan.  They will face Aberdeen pretty much as that trip leaves them.

If I was offered a win and a defeat this week, I’d take the win in Milan, but we will need enough in te tank for Sunday’s game.

Thanks to everyone who booked a ticket over the weekend for the CQN11 St Patrick’s Dinner on Friday on 13 March at the Kerrydale Suite.  Anyone still to catch up, let me know, celticquicknews@gmail.com

The vast majority of those who would feel excluded by (as opposed to disagreeing with) the add on would feel excluded by the entire sentiment of the lyrics anyway, so your point is irrelevant.

One of the great Doh! moments… Well, not so great. More pretty styoopit really.

Travelling this week, flying back Thursday evening. Decided to get the earlier plane so I’d be home in time to watch the game on the TV. So far, so good.

Then bleedin’ Bournesouprecipe posts that the match on Thursday is a 6pm kick off, not 8pm as thought. Cue double check…

Yip, right enough. 6pm kick off. Early flight lands at… 7pm!

If I’d booked the original flight – 8.30pm – I’d have been able to watch the whole match in the airport before the flight boarded.

As it is, I’ll be hoping it’s another 3-3 result and I might get up the road in time to catch the extra time.

It’s not irrelevant, it’s the opposite.

It allows republicanism to not be reduced to simply being the other side of the sectarian coin that is loyalism.

Both sides as bad as each other was the official British government policy in the North and it allowed the Brits to be seen as the honest broker, caught in the middle whilst doing their best to help the poor Paddies stop their sectarian fighting.

No need for Celtic fans to be seen as the other side of the 25,000 bigots that are filling Hampden with their hate-filled songs.

The cowardice comes from people in the media, in politics and within football itself who cravenly kow tow to the threat they perceive to exist from within the Rangers support. As with the decades long appeasing of these elements within their own board by Rangers (1872) who did not sign Catholic players despite knowing it was morally wrong and disadvantageous to them and then found there was no significant impact on their crowd figures when they did sign a Catholic so the authorities have in their minds imagined a threat that is far smaller than they now believe

*Interesting thought but I do recall reading (I know I know) that when mcsleekit was injured and they had a striker concern that naesurname wanted tae bring back the trackie selling scheidt but bader put the kybosh on that as he reckoned he cost them 10k on the gate.

  24. Sent a message to the SFA today:

    Good afternoon Darryl,

With all the storm over the abominable Chelsea fans racist and sectarian abuse against the black Parisian on the Paris metro, it was really good, I’m sure you’ll agree, to see Chelsea (Manager, captain and fans) condemn and vilify the actions of a section of their followers.

Will the SFA be demanding/expecting the Rangers FC to make statements on their fans abuse of Stan Collymore (chanting “you’re just a black Fenian b******d”), at Raith Rovers stadium last Friday?

I don’t imagine anything will be done about all their other Racist/sectarian singing/chanting against Catholics/Irish, as it’s never happened before but this man was specifically targeted, live and on national television.

    Regards

    John

PS. I am neither, Irish, black nor Catholic but I am offended by these ‘people’ continually getting away with Racist and sectarian behaviours.

    Dear Sender,

An email from you to Darryl.Broadfoot@scottishfa.co.uk at Mon, 23 Feb 2015 12:58:19 +0000 (GMT) has been quarantined and not delivered as it has been deemed to be inappropriate to the policy in use at The Scottish FA. Please contact the intended recipient for further assistance.

This is an automatic notification so please do not reply.

    Re-send

    Darryl,

I have had an e-mail to you blocked for inappropriate language.

With our national sport in the headlines for disgraceful occurrences, I am simply attempting to ask if the SFA will be expecting the Rangers football club to react in the exemplary manner that Chelsea FC have at the overt racism / sectarianism levelled the black Parisian last week?

The vilification of Stan Collymore by the Rangers support is a national disgrace on a par with the Chelsea event. I do not expect them to be sanctioned for their normalised (in Scotland) racist/sectarian chanting they get away with at every match but surely targeting an individual is beyond the pale, even for our SFA?

    Regards

    John

  27. National Anthem debate brought back memories of Seville. My nephew & myself were amongst thousands who stayed in Benelmadena and were bussed up to game. Next evening, we were rushing back to Hotel to catch bus to Airport when we were collared by a few inebriated fans, who wanted us to join in a Huddle and sing “A Soldiers Song”. There we were, standing in the middle of the street, giving it laldy, we singing in Irish , the Scottish lads singing in English, when our bus sailed past us on its way to the Airport minus 2 paid Clients.

Luckily we were adopted by a big bunch of Donegal lads who had a later bus, so we made our flight ok.
