Well done to the thousands who turned up for the Jock Stein 30th Anniversary game at Dunfermline yesterday. Money from the match is already helping refugees through the British Red Cross’s Europe Refugee Crisis Appeal.
The club site this morning reported David Miller of the Red Cross said, “Celtic FC Foundation and their fans’ support will make a real difference to the refugees and communities affected across Europe and in neighbouring countries. Thank you for supporting the appeal.”
We have a great auction coming up this week for hospitality at the Dundee game later this month, all funds going to the Foundation. Look out for it.
I was sorry to hear of the passing of Ralph Milne yesterday. Ralph was one of the outstanding talents of Scottish football when he won the league with Dundee United in 1983, a day after his 22nd birthday.
His scored the goal which won the league, but the memory of his chance in the European Cup semi-final, a year later away to Roma, still induces regret. 27 years later Roma would admit to bribing the referee for that game, as they progressed to the final with a 3-2 aggregate. A few years after winning the league the writing was on the wall for Ralph’s career.
I watched him playing a student team on a public park, telling the incredulous English person I was with about Ralph’s European Cup semi-final exploits three years earlier. He then floated around the English lower leagues before Sir Alex Ferguson signed him for Manchester United. Fergie remember the Ralph we were all amazed at from the 82-85 era, but by then (1988) Ralph was a a shadow of his former self. One of the game’s greats became one of its parodies.
Kick back and give yourself 20 minutes to have a read at Weekend at Bernie’s, recently published by the Hostile Monkey blog. In the light of last week’s court appearances it is a fully referenced, line-by-line, assessment of the “same club myth”, detailing six areas instances of the debate:
The Lord Nimmo-Smith Commission Argument
The European Football Club Association Argument
The UEFA website argument
The Advertising Standards Authority argument
The BBC Trust Argument
The SFA Registration Argument
It’s worth bookmarking for future reference.

CQN Is like the calm before the storm. Once Saturday comes the Celtic RollerCoaster will be in turbo charged mode. Can’t wait.

”Qualification looks likely, humiliation in the Finals is a certainty“
It’s something England have perfected
They are probably right though. This Italian side is pretty low on quality compared to 10 years ago.
I don’t think the new lad Simunovic will play on Sat. Reckon Charlie will play.
Gordon, Ambrose, Mulgrew, Izzy, Brown, Bitton, Forrest, Johanson, Armstrong, Griffiths

Coneybhoy.
If Lustig is not fit, are we playing with just the ten men?

Who got sent off ….???????
I think MON and Keane have arrived at the point in the group that best suits their skill set.
They will be able to motivate what is a poor Irish team (by historical measures, and IMO, before everyone starts shouting) to achieve the win they require against the Poles or the Germans. They have the necessary character traits to instil the correct attitude in their group of players, to achieve the result they require. It will not be pretty, but it will be mission accomplished. Scotland may get two wins from their final two games, but if Ireland get the win they need, it will be irrelevant in terms of further progress in the tournament. I think at that point WGS will stand down as manager. I think he should – his erstwhile likeable quirky obtuseness, is giving way to an annoying tendency to give embarrassing ‘Roger Irrelevant’ answers to every reasonable question he is asked. (Even if reasonable questions are asked only occasionally)
HUNDERBIRDS ARE GONE
Much of your post is opinion,I’m not gonna argue with that. Mainly because most of it is difficult to disagree with!
But IMO,Gordon Strachan would be hailed as a national hero were it not for Friday. That was a bliddy disaster.
Another Blantyre boy laid to rest this morning and I can’t attend due to work commitments

Is answering questions at press conferences important? Let’s not forget the muppets asking the questions.

If I recall correctly Gs wasn’t even expected us to get close to qualifying for the Euros when he was appointed. It was more about improving the standings with a view to the WC. I might be wrong.
It’s a 50:50 in my eyes. I can easily see the Republic losing to Germany at home and away in Poland. I can’t quite so easily see us beating Poland at home, but after last night it’s certainly possible.

So it has come to tat has it? Pitchforks and Bitumen torches?
So what is the official line here? Sounds like some humanistic secular liberal everyone has a right to do and say whatever they want as long as that doesn’t infringe on my rights brigade.
Groan.
Aberdeen are quite capable of signing Ronny’s P45
The Georgia game aside (where the players badly let the team down) I think GS has done a decent job getting this far in the group. It is a stinker compared to some of them, and from where Scotland were 2 years ago to challenging the 3 top teams is pretty decent. Not that I think Fletcher should be ahead of Griff, or Marshall ahead of Craig Gordon, but I hope he stays on.

Agreed, the margins are fine, and Gordon certainly improved the team, relative to what he inherited. However success as a manager must always be -and is- measured by results and progress in tournament football. Of course it may still work out for him, I just don’t think it will.

I think the last statement in my previous post backs up what you say, and I agree the standard of both the questions, and those asking them is more than open to question. Having said all that, I do think communication skills are an important part of being an international manager. The fans look to the manager as the spokesperson for the team, to lay out what we can expect, how we aim to play, and to motivate us, and the fans then in turn, motivate the team. Look at Ireland’s upcoming games to see how this can work. Just because the meeja are wrong, it doesn’t make the manager right.
bitumen torches? …. Naw, Bunsen Burners these days

There is no official line,to suggest such is facile. All there is is opinion.
Yours is based more pragmatically. Others are more idealistic.
All want a solution. And there isn’t a solution to every problem, sadly.

Thanks for that ——- been a long while since I heard it .. . Long time ago . My late 20s / early 30s . I was ambivalent about The Specials . I liked the idea much more than I liked the sound .. Went to see them with Madness and The BodySnatchers at a heavy / violent gig in London.. Poignant memories of right wing and left wing skinheads battling it out on the dancefloor to the sonic backdrop of Dr Alimantado’s majestic Born For A Purpose
“It is a stinker compared to some of them,”
Abzmike,
Agree.
Scotland are like celtic in that they always seem to be drawn alongside the current champions or champions in-waiting.

Countries simply have to protect their borders.
End of story.
BMCUW .
A relalignment of what is left of the ole grey matter means I now think it might have been The Selecter rather than The BodySnatchers .. Thinking of the latter reminds me of their singer and The Specials performing The Boiler on a teen tele prog of the time ——– gormless shuffling on the dancefloor to those bleak, bleak lyrics . Bizarre !

I’ll try to find it for you, bud. Amazing the power of Google.

Change is difficult, to be sure. But Ronny is not cut out for the big game. Sorry to burst your bubble.
Brisbane,
Your common sense is a refreshing departure from socialist la la land.
However, Aberdeen will be dumped on Saturday.
Brisbane 67 you sound like one of these people who knows the price of everything but the value of nothing.
Capt.
I hope you are right, but I fear Ronny will establish another absurd tactical setup that will be exploited.
Who knows.
Hebcelt,
Glad to hear you are making it over for the home games.

Woops, forgot Boyata at CH earlier!
I think Ronny will be cautious on Sat, hence no new lads and Efe at the back.
Love to see Rogic or Commons in the uncreative middle but I can’t see it. As such, we need Forrest and Griifiths. Big mistake if Ciftci comes in after his lay off.
I think Johansen has had his telling off and will be back(I leave him benched for now)
Efe will be torn apart by the Aberdeen wingers if he is the right back.
I expect to see the new Croat introduced. Why not?
Cifci needs a run of games.
Afternoon Timland from a very warm and humid hun free mountain valley.
Ronny doesn’t have a defence to choose from, not a defence that has played together anyways, the sheepies will have had a couple of weeks together, while we have been galavanting round the world on pointless international games, they are at home, they will get all the help they need from the cheats with the whistles and flegs, if we don’t lose the game I will be delighted.
If we do lose, it won’t be unexpected imo as the stars are not lined up in our favour.
What will be will be.

On the refugee crisis.
There is a way to help stop things getting worse in the lands where the problems are, from a UK point of view.
Elect a government in the UK that is anti war, elect a government that has the balls to stand up to the banksters and the corrupt businesses, elect a government who will the the americans to GTF.
As I honestly can’t see the english voting for a labour party with JC leading it, it will be more of the same, and the scottish people will get another tory led government, more austerity, more wars.
Your choice scotland.

What is their choice?
Voting for the SNP or Labour is a vote for a moral sewage system.
A Conservative Government (not the one presently) that respects traditional family values, our culture and heritage is the only way forward.
Geordie Munro thanks for that, next best thing to Champions league nights. Hail Hail Hebcelt
Common sense is nothing more than a set of prejudices you happen to share..
Scary power of nature electrical storm – way down south. . Dark at 1.05pm. Torrential rain/ big hailstones. 32 degrees .
Horrible ! .
Good opportunity for a much needed kip.
Ciao Ciao.
And to think! We could all be living in paradise (the biblical version) if that numpty hadn’t taken a bite from the apple.

When has there ever been a Conservative Govt that has respected and encouraged family values? You and John O’Neil and Macjay live in lala land. You have taken advantage of the best welfare state that was Britain in the 1960s led by Harold Wilson who did tell the yanks to GTF, and now you want to pull the ladder up behind you.
Damned right, shame on you.
And you were an economic migrant who would deny the same chance to others. What a prick.

Because your marxist materialist atheistic delusions don’t fit in with other people’s views, doesn’t mean you have to abuse them.
