Weighty comparison for Ntcham

Roy Keane played 13 games for Celtic and the first two of those were memorably for a disastrous performance and result away to Clyde, then what looked like an out of shape performance by the former Ireland international at home to Kilmarnock.

The remaining 11 games of his Celtic career were a lesson on what a great central midfield player looks like.  This was an era when we had recently seen Champions League winner, Paul Lambert, and Neil Lennon, play central mid, both masters of their craft, but Keane fulfilled the role better than anyone I had seen in a Celtic shirt, even as a 34-year-old.

There’s a video of his solitary performance away to Rangers (@FocusOnCeltic), where he asserts himself effortlessly, a lesson on how it should be done.  I watched a similar video of Olivier Ntcham against Newco on Sunday (@CelticBible).

The obvious point should be made.  The Rangers team of 2006 that Keane faced had players like Barry Ferguson and Dado Prso, and had a proper manager, whereas the team Olivier Ntcham faced are not of the same calibre, nor were they at home, but you and me have watched rubbish Oldco/Newco teams over the years without seeing such a complete performance from a Celtic central mid as Olivier’s.

Last month I suggested we drop Olivier and pull Callum McGregor deep, as the former’s passing and effectiveness was off the pace during the qualifiers.  He was one of several subject to bids and contract talks over the summer.  A clear head seems to have elevated the 22-year-old’s game to a new level.

The King is in town, get along to see Henrik and pals do their stuff at Celtic Park tomorrow.

    Good Evening Timland.

A few Celtic men on show tonight as well as the magnificent Hazard

As I have said before on here, THAT Cup win was THE best ever moment of my watching Celtic. Never have experienced before or since the “high” it gave me and that includes Lisbon.

  4. Back to Basics - Glass Half Full on

    Hi all.

The attack on Charlie Phelan in Girvan is truly awful.

Extensive coverage in the print media and even STV.

Not a mention from BBC Scotland.

Make of that what you will.

Respect to the crowd funders aiming to give Charlie a pick up.

    Hail hail

  5. Just a quick visit to wish the wonderful OLDTIM all the best. A lovely lovely man. Hope you get back to the fitbaw asap.

A wee shout out for a Go Fund me page for Charlie Phelan the Derry Tim who was so brutally assaulted after the game last Sunday.

Over 1500 raised so far to give Charlie a Holiday once he is feeling well enough.

I’m rubbish at posting links maybe one of ye bright sparks might oblige.

  6. Really looking forward to our Europa league group.Much more chance of doing something, rather than getting tanned,by financially doped up clubs. In saying that,to draw 2 clubs, backed by Red Bull,is shocking.UEFA at its finest.Watching the Germany game last night their best player was their wide left attacking player, from Leipzig.Very quick, and direct.A big problem for us,I would think.Hope Brendan was watching..

Anyway, off to a party now on the beach.I have the charity match tomorrow,so life is good.

  7. Madmitch,

If we paid our star player £100k per week, as you suggest, what would we be paying for Brown (captain), Tierney, Rogic ( new 5 year deal ) and on top of those, in the absence of Lyons’s offer from Dembele, I believe we’d have tried to offer him an enhanced and extended deal.

By all means, offer N’tcham an extended contract on better terms (£30k pw for example), but paying him £100k pw won’t increase his transfer market value by 3 or 4 times. We’re not likely to realise a transfer value in excess of 30 – 40m for any player whilst playing in the SPFL.

  8. OT67, sorry to read that…keep the chin up auld yin…you can b assured you have many friends on here…mibbe u should organise a wee shindig? ? between now and then

I see Celtic have ‘ordered an independent enquiry’.

This suggests to me that Celtic have little confidence in Police Scotland conducting a thorough and impartial review of the incident and willing to admit culpability if found in the the wrong.

Of course, if its findings are not to the likening of Police Scotland then its independence will be questioned and its findings smeared. The SMSM will happily fall in to line and seize the chance of a negative Celtic story and the whole thing will be swept under the carpet.

Alas, this is what happens when you live in a backwater where those in positions of power, responsibility and influence are not properly held to account and are easily co-opted.

Keep that in mind next time you vote SNP.

  12. Someone enquired about Dunfermline when beating Celtic 5-1, If my memory is still working I believe that the great man himself was Manager of Dunfermline at that time,by great man I mean Jock Stein.

I came home from around about that time and was desperate to take in a game, one of my Brothers said that he wouldn’t mind going to Dunfermline game,so 5 of us went and watch the game,Dunfermline was down about 4 or 5 nothing after the away leg so they had a hard job on hand, but they beat the team? they were playing 6-1 and I’m sure Jock Stein was their manager at the time,Dunfermline had a very good teamat that time and they had the best Manager as well,my memory may be playing tricks with me,but I think that I’m right.

I would imagine that is why Dunfermline beat us 5-1 that day.

  13. Dear moderator (or paul67 for it is he). If you insist on deleting posts then please do it right and remove turkeybhoy abusive rants from the previous page.

  16. Canamalar it looks like OCD obsession on

    No GM,

The independent inquiery is a result of the board being forced by supporter pressure that their pathetic initial statement was an insult to those who where put at risk. Don’t kid yourself such action would have been taken without supporter pressure.

  17. Canamalar on the mods that’s not what I heard. Though the picture of turkeybhoy furiously deleting posts is quite a funny one.

  18. I wonder how independent the independent enquiry will be Canamalar……..we all know what happened . The cops and Celtic coooked up a stupid plan to segregate supporters without actually thinking through the consequences or caring about the safety of the Celtic fans. This is bourne out by the fact that the Huns who were there were chargin the Celtic supporters after the game.

There I could save all that money on a fixed independent enquiry.
