Welcome to the new look Celtic Quick News.

There are a few changes.  We are on a new version of WordPress and are using a more modern template (which we’ve been using for CQN Magazine for some time) but your existing user name and login details will still work.  The old WordPress was years out of date and we were beginning to run into issues as a consequence.  To get to the comments section scroll to the bottom of the page and login as usual.  The Magazine site is no longer a separate entity, news items, which previously appeared there, will now appear below the most recent two blog articles on the Celtic Quick News home page – most recent article top left, second mode recent, top right.

We’ll be making modifications over the next few days.  I’ve moved server environments (from three dedicated physical servers to a modifiable virtual environment).  Not convinced we have the balance right here so there’s likely to be some tweeking ahead.  Also, please ignore any CQNMagazine livery for now, it’ll be replaced in due course.

Today’s article appears below but was originally published on the old template.  I’ve not had a chance to copy comments from this article yet but comments from previous articles are on the new version.

Hope you like it (don’t hate it too much!).

Thanks, Paul.

Last night’s article:

Last night played out pretty much as I hoped and expected.  A win to zero was what I asked for, while Qarabag demonstrated the kind of resistance which served them so well last season, before tiring late on.

Craig Gordon didn’t have a save to make.  What worries there were at the back came from the sudden realisation that Qarabag were up-field and within the kind of range that a hit-and-hope effort could fly in.  Concerns in Celtic’s final third are a bit more pronounced.  Up against a well organised defence, we created very little and again relied upon a set-piece to break the deadlock.

Did you notice the passing issues we had in the first half?  Individual players can have days when passing just isn’t right but when things go wrong on an industrial scale, there’s usually a reason for it.

For me it looked like we were not compact enough.  It’s normal to spread across the field when dealing with a packed defence, but we were invariably over-ambitious with our passing.  Try to think of partnerships which looked good last night?  Apart from the central defensive paring I can’t think of any.  Lots of good performances, but the first half was marked by poor passing and players not in-tune with each other.

The change to 4-4-2, which is naturally more compact, helped, even as it came at the cost of our best player until then, Nir Bitton.  There are lots of reasons why most of the time we are going to stay with 4-2-3-1, but we need to learn how to be more compact in this formation.

I was reluctant to see Kris Commons make an appearance, as tense Celtic Park crowds are not the most understanding of players who are short of fitness.  Fortunately, Kris didn’t need to cover a lot of ground, but his first touch of the season was good enough to create the best opening of the game.  Thereafter he brought a tangible change in the goal threat.

We’ve talked about this before, but it’s worth restating.  To win tight games you often need to create seven or eight good chances.  Without Kris Commons we rarely do this.

We will be clear favourites now to progress, and although Qarabag are a decent team, we saw nothing too concerning, but the tie is far from finished.  Get the tactics wrong out there, fail to create partnerships from middle to forward, and we’ll be turfed out.

Was great to meet you and the rest of the troops again last night. My Polish friends loved the whole occasion. They were still buzzing about Celtic today. :)

Cheers, I’ll check it out later.

I noted your post earlier and was about to agree fully but the cqn changes and a phone call distracted me.

Today reminded me why I have posted less than ten times in the last month.

Cheers, my friend. I think they all too busy keeping an eye on big Vergil!!

  12. Geordie…,

Seriously, watch the game, we were magic, and that’s from an expert Celtic watcher, I’ve seen us much much worse and get rave reviews.

The refs name must be bray cause that was the only donkey on the park.

Give them their due the bin liners were good at defending but only fortune favouring them stopped us scoring in the first half, good luck to them but they need to come at us next week and I don’t think they are good enough to stop us and try and score goals. It’s either or IMEO

The year is 1996. By this time, the American Government’s policy of Social Welfare has been extended to require that any married couple who has not had a child within the first five years of marriage, must receive the services of a government man who will attempt to be the means of the wife becoming a mother.

There are no children in the family of this particular story: much to the sorrow of the husband, and it is the morning of their fifth wedding anniversary.

Husband – Well, goodbye, dear, I’m off to the office. I suppose the government man will be here shortly, computer-printed address and all.

He leaves with his head bowed. The wife pretties herself and powders her nose just as the doorbell rings. She is expecting the government man, but instead her caller is a baby photographer who has come to see if he could interest her in some baby pictures. The following conversation ensues:

    Lady: Oh, Good Morning.

Man: How do you do? You probably don’t know me, but I represent—-

    Lady: You needn’t explain, Mr.—-

Man: Jones is the name, Madame, and I make a specialty of—-

Lady: Yes, of course, I know. It’s all right. Won’t you come in?

Man: Your husband probably told you that—-

Lady: Oh, yes, and we both agreed that it is the best thing to do.

Man: Well, in that case I might as well get busy.

Lady: I’m not too familiar with the way you do this. Just where do we start?

Man: Just leave it to me, Madame. I recommend two in the bathtub, one or two more on the couch, and a couple on the floor.

Lady: Bathtub? Couch? Floor? Good heavens.

Man: Well, my dear lady, even the best of us can’t get a good one every time, but out of six, one is bound to be a honey. I usually have the best luck with the bathtub shots.

Lady: You’ll have to forgive me, but it does seem a little informal.

Man: The charm of the whole thing is the informality. Perhaps you would like to see some of my work?

Lady: Well, I suppose so —-, after all, there is no hurry, is there?

Man: No, indeed, a man in my line can’t do his best work in a hurry. (He opens his album and shows her.) Look at this baby. It’s a good job. Took four hours, but isn’t it a beauty?

Lady: Yes, indeed a lovely child.

Man: But for a tough assignment, look at this job. Believe it or not, it was done on top of a bus on Fifth Avenue.

    Lady: My God.

Man: Well, there a little story behind that. The mother of the child was a movie actress in need of a little publicity, and did she get it.

    Lady: I should think so.

Man: Here is the picture of the handsomest of twins in town. I knocked that out in Central Park on a snowy afternoon last winter. It took me from two in the afternoon ’til five. I never worked under more difficult conditions, with people four or five deep, crowding to take a look.

    Lady: Four or five deep?

Man: Yes people everywhere. Just imagine working more than three hours under handicaps like that. I even had two cops helping me. I could have gotten anther quick shot or two before dark, but by that time the squirrels were nibbling on my equipment and I had to give up. Well, Madame, if you are ready, I’ll set up my tripod and we’ll get started.

    Lady: Your tripod?

Man: Yes, I always use a tripod to rest my equipment on, as it’s too heavy for me to hold for any length of time, and – Good heavens, she fainted

A lot of missiles from the stand after the second goal for Legia. Duda was taken off the pitch unconsious. Scary scenes. The referees stopped the game and announced the end of it after the next couple of minutes.

  20. On last night’s game, the positive a good result, no goals conceded.

On the performance, poor first half, couldn’t put two passes together. Broonie had a really poor game, hope that’s it out his system. Johannsen and Armstrong also had a poor night.

What was wee James thinking of booting the ball away, deserved his yellow.

Although Izzy did okay by comparison to the Midfield we got a fright late in the game, with Charlie out we are one away from not having a LB.

    Keep the Faith!

    Hail Hail!
