Well done, Celtic

310

Sunday was a huge test of Celtic’s apparent return to form.  Aberdeen had the luxury of training and preparing for their semi-final, while Celtic travelled to France to play on-form Lille; an exhausting occasion.

Apart from a couple of ominous looking early cross balls, the game was completely controlled by the holders, as they secured yet another domestic cup win: 35 without reply.  100 years from now fans will look back on this period in their record books and wonder at the incessant adulation the Celtic players and manager must surely have received……

Ryan Christie comes in for his fair share of criticism for shooting from distances that beggar belief.  When offered inviting space 26 yards from goal he was always going to have a pop; it evaded the despairing lunge of Joe Lewis and found the top right corner of the ‘keeper’s net.  It was a symmetrical strike to Mohamed Elyounoussi’s first in Lille.

By this stage, Odsonne Edouard, on his first start since recovering from Covid, passed up a double chance and, as manager Derek McInnes would later observe, the Aberdeen defence were “spooked” by his presence.  Tom Rogic crafted the second and final goal of the game when he crossed from an unlikely angle, pitching the ball over Lewis to drop at the far post, where Elyounoussi  committed to the cause, and the post*, to score.

There were many tired legs and minds in green and white in the second half but Neil Lennon chose to defend what he had.  Aberdeen were given plenty of the ball but were unable to trouble Scott Bain.  I was happy to see us play like this, there will be many occasions this season when we will need to shut up shop.

Hearts will attempt to be the first team to win the Scottish Cup in the ‘season’ they were relegated.  It will be an historic final either way, as Celtic can become the first club to win four consecutive Scottish Cups, moving clear of the record they share with Aberdeen, Rangers and Queen’s Park.

We have become accustomed to setting records.  The Invincible Treble was delicious and the first back-to-back treble historically special in its own right.  That it was more of the same, did not make the last Scottish Cup final, also against Hearts, any less tense or celebrated.  It is as though each additional achievement makes the next trophy all the more important, to Celtic and to everyone else.

Well done, Celtic.

I hope all is well with you and the family.

Thank you my friend. Aye everybody is fine but you wouldn’t recognise me. I was put on a diet in June and have lost just over 30kgs in a bid to reverse Type 2 diabetes. I’m following in the footsteps of Malorbhoy of this parish.

I’m presently doing some Locum work in the West Midlands until mid-December, so trust me to move to England when the pubs are reopening in Scotland and closing in England. 😉 😂😂

Very frustrated at the moment, no new Covid cases for the last few

days, but we can’t get our kids back into our football clubhouse yet as

the health people are still using it for a testing station.

But we’re organising 5 a side games out on the pitches, come

    wearing a strip.

Can’t see us in competition till next year, but wee games

inter club helps stop their frustration.

I gave them to a good Celtic family who helped me through tough

It would appear that several posters who refuse to bow down and pay homage to our manager are being chastised for coming onto an open public platform and yelling our condemnation of our management and players.

“Let’s get it right — this isn’t in the same ballpark as the controversial incidents at Celtic and Aberdeen earlier this season.

Eight lads at Pittodrie went out on the town, while Boli Bolingoli jumped on a plane and flew off to Spain for a break, for crying out loud.”

  16. Delaney’s Dunky,

Since the players and Neil are reading, maybe it was the tough love, or the tactical advice on here and other sites that have (hopefully) turned the season around.

Maybe we should be thanking the more demanding fans. 🤷🏽‍♂️

I would be worried if negative comments online caused any decline in standards and would imagine in the cream of the crop it would have the opposite effect – NFL seems to absolutely love proving people wrong for example.

Stories of newspaper clippings pinned to the dressing room wall are legend.

Maybe the modern equivalent is print outs of CQN comments. 😂

Another point is that, like me, you are lucky that you have people to talk to about Celtic. I’m sure there will be people on here who are not so lucky and I welcome their thoughts – both positive and negative.

    Thanks for the correction

It was careless editing by myself. I originally had it as “when Lille were 2:0 down”, and I meant to change it to “When we were 2:0 up”. Instead I left it hanging between two stools.

I hope the point got across i.e. when the result ended in 0 to Aberdeen, Neil has every right to feel he called the timing of substitutions right. When it ended with Lille scoring 2, his substitution timing was, most likely, not right.

    …………….

No problem. I understood your point perfectly. I’ve done the same thing many a time. The great thing is that there is a clear audit trail to demonstrate that Celtic are heading in the right direction again and getting back to where we all want them to be: The 30 mins in the second half against Milan, coming back twice to take the lead in Aberdeen, that first half in Lille and yesterday’s first half in particular. I’m sure we’ll overcome our recent travails when all of our players are available.
