Well done, Celtic

310

Sunday was a huge test of Celtic’s apparent return to form.  Aberdeen had the luxury of training and preparing for their semi-final, while Celtic travelled to France to play on-form Lille; an exhausting occasion.

Apart from a couple of ominous looking early cross balls, the game was completely controlled by the holders, as they secured yet another domestic cup win: 35 without reply.  100 years from now fans will look back on this period in their record books and wonder at the incessant adulation the Celtic players and manager must surely have received……

Ryan Christie comes in for his fair share of criticism for shooting from distances that beggar belief.  When offered inviting space 26 yards from goal he was always going to have a pop; it evaded the despairing lunge of Joe Lewis and found the top right corner of the ‘keeper’s net.  It was a symmetrical strike to Mohamed Elyounoussi’s first in Lille.

By this stage, Odsonne Edouard, on his first start since recovering from Covid, passed up a double chance and, as manager Derek McInnes would later observe, the Aberdeen defence were “spooked” by his presence.  Tom Rogic crafted the second and final goal of the game when he crossed from an unlikely angle, pitching the ball over Lewis to drop at the far post, where Elyounoussi  committed to the cause, and the post*, to score.

There were many tired legs and minds in green and white in the second half but Neil Lennon chose to defend what he had.  Aberdeen were given plenty of the ball but were unable to trouble Scott Bain.  I was happy to see us play like this, there will be many occasions this season when we will need to shut up shop.

Hearts will attempt to be the first team to win the Scottish Cup in the ‘season’ they were relegated.  It will be an historic final either way, as Celtic can become the first club to win four consecutive Scottish Cups, moving clear of the record they share with Aberdeen, Rangers and Queen’s Park.

We have become accustomed to setting records.  The Invincible Treble was delicious and the first back-to-back treble historically special in its own right.  That it was more of the same, did not make the last Scottish Cup final, also against Hearts, any less tense or celebrated.  It is as though each additional achievement makes the next trophy all the more important, to Celtic and to everyone else.

Well done, Celtic.

  2. Speaking of Hats and Scarf salesmen…

For a few months ( back in the early 80’s) I had a next door neighbour who used to load up his car with black bin bags full of Celtic Hats and scarves and head off to Celtic Park from our street in North Belfast.

His non official merchandise focussed on ‘the struggle’, he told me that his Belfast accent was an asset. The following week he was loading up his car again…. I asked if he also sold his wares at our away games?

He opened one of the bags to reveal the contents…… it was full of scarves ,all Red White and Royal, Loyal Blue.

    “I’m off to Ibrox”

His Belfast accent was probably just as big an asset at the Death Star.😀

( Don’t mix up your bags pal)

I first met him in the late 70s and we had a shared interest in Arsenal, he used to source me some of their badges and patches. Nice guy. Like me he’ll be getting on now.

There was a guy (bluenose) called Doig from our area, maybe Cleland, who made the AITKEN EATS HUNS and their hun equivalent badges back then.

There’s another vendor from the 80s I still (used to) see at the away games, follows the Bhoys everywhere, still wears a tammy (from his leftover stock I’d imagine).

I know of a Guy in his 60’s in Glesga who does exact same thing, and is ALWAYS selling Crap at the Orange Walks etc, and doing that same at Celtic Park and Ipox/Hamdump etc to this very day.

    Hes a real Chump

He ” Views” himself as a Top Salesman..and one day I told him that he certainly wasnt ” A salesman2, as the Crap stuff that he peddles sells itself…especially the Hun Crap.

    He Wisnae very pleased LOL.

Its NOT the same Guy that you know of, cos the Guy I know doesnt drive etc.

Because he jumps between BOTH Camps..he really believes that he is some sort of ” Del Boy” , but he knows nothing about Celtic…he hasnt a clue how many Punters in his local Pub just laugh at him.

  7. Re hats/scarfs:

So by the sounds of it these boys are just working for themselves- I often wondered if there was one person sticking out a few salesmen.

Do the vendors get the stock made specifically for themselves or is there a place they’d go to that has the latest stock – maybe has produced half Celtic, half euro opposition scarfs for example?

It’s certainly noticable when Celtic are being discussed.

  10. ERNIE/HOT SMOKED

To most Americans, even if you are not part of the 50M who claim Irish ancestry this is neither a big deal nor a negative. However, I’m with you HOT SMOKED there is always that subtle anti Catholic undercurrent. How could there be anything else in a country which for centuries banned the practice of this faith and actively persecuted those who tried. As we know even today there are roles within the British establishment either by law or convention not open to Catholics. There is a feeling that Catholics really can’t be trusted. The fact that in the north of Ireland and Scotland we are ‘treated’ to the not so subtle anti Catholic sentiment doesn’t mean that the subtle English/British version doesn’t exist.

I’ve a mate who sells hats and scarves at Parkhead. Dyed in the wool Tim, season book holder.

I think he gets his stuff from someone who supplies a number of others.

I went to Ipox a few years back to support Villa Real and bumped into him selling hun stuff. He was happy to take their money. It’s just a job. He told me there’squite a few Tims who sell stuff there. I daresay some of the guys at Parkhead might be huns.

  12. Back in the day I often wondered where The Tricolour Factory was. They would come in all shapes, materials and sizes and that was just each third of each Tricolour. Also wondered where they got all the canes, maybe the polis took the bins of confiscated canes back to The Tricolour factory for a small fee – and repeat for the next game. Original recycling ?

Good to see you on here my bhoy.

Used to order my tricolours from Clerys Department Store in Dublin – nothing but the best! (but the first one was confiscated by the Polis at the 1978 League Cup Final at Hampden v huns).

I see the President of Albania is running about with a Craigneuk Bhoys scarf & teeshirt these days – excellent work!

  14. MCPHAIL BHOY on 3RD NOVEMBER 2020 10:48 AM

    Sorry, but that’s bullshit.

The only role that’s not open to Catholics is head of the church of England.

Mark Thompson who was director general of the BBC from 2004-2012 is a high profile Catholic. That’s not suggestive of an anti Catholic organisation.

The other, and perhaps main reason for the BBC to mention Biden’s Irish roots is that is directly relevant to the UK in so much as it affects Biden’s attitude to the Good Friday Agreement which in turn will affect his attitude to post Brexit trade deals between the UK and the US.

Aye, some right horror shows back in the day, even worse when they tried to impose their idea of the club crest somewhere in the vicinity of the white portion. This could have been the origin of the Cracked Crest. Of course The Model Tricolour at the front of the Haunfy of Tricolours was always pristine and top quality. What you actually bought was one fae the back ay the haun – of varied materials and a dye-bled crest akin to your foreheid of an Ash Wednesday.

After the first one was polis-nabbed, I organised a collection from the supporters bus (Edinburgh & District) for the next one….Clery’s again…..that lasted about 6 months then disappeared….I believe it turned up in Bonnyrigg a few years later….

Of course, if we had been playing Bayer leverkusen the season would have been stopped immediately before the game.

Have sevco games been cancelled yet by the government ?

Sturgeon and the SNP are no friends of celtic and the Catholic community. They need our vote because the other side are staunch unionists. Once independence has been achieved there will be one huge you can all now go f%#! Yourselves to the celtic support. We will be living in the most bigoted anti catholic country in the world. A bigger version of the six counties.

    Try the scarves and flags,

There was a serious car crash on the way to Aberdeen back in the day. The car contained loads of hun gear and the two occupants of the car were badly injured.

The car was full of hun gear as the two guys were heading up to Pittodrie to sell.

Daily record got a hold of the story and had a splash about the two rankers supporters injured in the car crash.

It later emerged that it was two Tims who were injured.
