Well-rehearsed Celtic earn merited point

354

Two weeks ago we spoke about the fine margins which determine results in the Champions League. Last night’s share of the points was a great example. While Borussia Monchengladbach were the better team at Celtic Park last month, they relied on two defensive errors to settle the game. Had Celtic stayed error free they may have won.

Last night we were error free (you could nit-pick about the Gladbach goal) and got a better result. A result which surprises on the upside or downside has the potential to overshadow an actual performance, but our point was deserved.

It didn’t look that way early on. Although Celtic defended comfortably for the first 15 minutes, we were unable to hold the ball. The abiding memory of that period is Tom Rogic with three black shirts around him the moment the ball arrived at his feet. Even long balls to the later-impressive Moussa Dembele were offering no relief.

We didn’t create anything the first time we got possession inside the Gladbach box, but this was the most important passage of play in the game. We retained possession for more than 20 passes, allowing players to settle, and perhaps giving Borussia more defensive duties to consider. At no point thereafter were we pinned back inside our own half.

Dembele had no right to get around the defender and into a shooting position at the penalty. He knocked the ball to the defender’s left and ran past him on his right, in the middle of the box. It took craft and strength. It’s been a while since we’ve had a striker who would have been capable of this kind of move.

Honourable mentions to Scotts Sinclair and Brown. Sinclair clearly worried the Gladbach defenders, who could only outnumber him when he drove deep into their half with the ball tied to his feet.

The most striking aspect of the performance was how we performed defensively. With squad players Emilio Izaguirre and Cristian Gamboa at full back and Mikael Lustig partnering Erik Sviatchenko in the middle you would be forgiven for worrying we might see the kind of disorganisation witnessed at the Camp Nou on match day one.

Instead we looked well-rehearsed, while Craig Gordon was back at his best.

Callum McGregor’s should have won all three points with a gilt-edged chance near the end. That could have made the difference between third and fourth in the group, but a win would have flattered us.

I would not say it is getting worse. It was safe and quiet for some years at Legia stadium. The owners of the club forgot that 100-150 hooligans is regular element of the crowd.

  3. At the game last night in the sectionntonthe left of the main section occupied by the Celtic support, one of our own fell out of the top deck, hit the partition and netting of our section and landed head first in n amongst the Celtic and Borussia fans in that section. It was horrific and a number of ambulance people, paramedics and stewards were called to the incident. It was hard to see how the incident developed.

Has there been anything in the papers/on the news. Does anyone know if the fan is alright. It was fairly horrible to witness. I hope the person has not sustained a serious injury which will be a miracle in itself.

    Well said.

In addition I’ll put this out there before bed.

Strict liability is here in all but name.

Prior to this season’s beginning all clubs were asked to sign up to an SFA/SPFL code of conduct. Celtic agreed.

The consequence is that an unnamed official now marks the behaviour of the Celtic support at all games.

So far this season we’ve been marked unacceptable in every away game. So, at the first game at Tynecastle we were were failed but Hearts passed.

The replacement for the Act is already in place.

” MSPs Mason and Dornan vilified the world of football, our major sport, sport with a very good record of fan behaviour ”

Exactly. I posted the other day about the absence of violence and truly unacceptable behaviour at football matches. If football stadia were, in fact, the wild, violent places that Dornan in particular describes, then few people would attend.

I think many people voted SNP to show support for Independence. I suspect many will now be changing their minds as they see how that party`s members show a distinct lack of independence of thought.

    Cheerio for now,

Hamilton …. a few questions if you dont mind.

is that code of conduct available online to read?

Is it strict liability or vicarous liablity? People often use those terms interchangably, but they are actually very different animals … I would suspect it would be the latter ….

any insight into why Celtic would agree to something like that (strict or vicarious)?

Franny, I was told a great story of what was Rangers signing Paterson.

The now defunct club were desperate to sign him from Hibs. Bertie was Hibs manager then.

Bertie knew if the Horribles gave him a full medical , Paterson would fail it.

He held out and held out until the currants needed Paterson for a big game and they signed him without a full medical and for a better price.

It would be an insult to donkeys to describe Paterson as a donkey during his time at the evil empire.

    Thanks

I am under no illusions that the SNP are already preparing Phase 2 of their attack on football. If we were ever to get an opportunity to play in a league outwith Scotland, we would be made to pay a hefty price for not showing enough Scottish Patriotism to know our place.

    MIT

The Celtic Board have already made a statement expressing concerns about the workability of any Strict Liability legislation. I suspect that they must have looked at the feedback obtained in the process HT has outlined and said- “What’s all this with our fans being marked down but the opposition fans are all getting a bye?”

This is a precursor of how things will go. Chants of Orange Bassa or Fenian Bassa will get you warnings fines and ground closures but chants of Arab Bassa or Hibby Bassa will go un-noticed.

In Scotland we define sectarianism as “all that Ulster stuff”, but give a bye to anti-English sentiment and we get more offended by the adjective that precedes the noun “Bassa” than we do by the noun itself.

I suspect you’re right regarding vicarious liability as opposed to strict but it is deeply worrying that this was agreed to by the club with no consultation or official announcement.

Many thanks for passing on my message to JT. My wife and I had a great time at the game, thanks. If your mate’s son thinks he had a great time then he probably did. Our fans were in great voice throughout the game and gave the team tremendous backing. The players looked gutted at the end when they came to applaud the fans. They realised they should have won at the end.
