STEPHEN WELSH has sealed a season-long loan deal to Motherwell.

With Brendan Rodgers pushing the claims of Dane Murray this season, the former Scotland Under-21 international centre-back has been allowed to move on a temporary transfer.

Welsh spent the second half of last season on loan at Belgian outfit KV Mechelen and he is looking forward to getting some game-time at the Fir Park club.

The 25-year-old defender is eager to get started at Well and said: “I’m looking forward to this next chapter. I have substantial experience in this division and feel I can really add to the project here.

“The squad have made a great start to the season, and the mood is positive.

“It’s good that I now have two weeks of training, where I can get familiar with how the team plays before the first game against Dundee.”

ON THE BALL AND ON THE MOVE…Stephen Welsh has joined Motherwell on loan.

Boss Jens Berthel Askou, speaking to the Daily Record, added: “We are delighted to announce the signing of Stephen Welsh, our final addition of the summer transfer window.

“Being comfortable and composed in possession, while also confident and reliable when defending big areas, Stephen possesses the traits we are looking for in a modern centre-back.

“Having featured regularly for Celtic’s first team, both in domestic competitions and on the European stage, Stephen adds quality, experience and even more competition to the squad.”

Welsh is the THIRD centre-half to be allowed to leave the champions this summer.

Swedish international Gustaf Lagerbielke joined Europa League rivals SC Braga in a £2million move while Maik Nawrocki moved to Hannover 69 on a season-long contract.

Rodgers has Cameron Carter-Vickers, Liam Scales, Auston Trusty and Murray battling for the two central positions while he has added Manchester City youngster Jahmai Simpson-Pusey in a temporary switch.
