Welsh should start ahead of Carter-Vickers

286

Saturday’s game against Ross County was Cameron Carter-Vickers’ second run out since July, so there was no surprise to see him down with cramp in the second half.  Match fitness cannot be fully achieved without matches.  It will take a few weeks until he is fully primed.

This poses a question for Ange Postecoglou, does he play Cameron against Real Betis tomorrow or revert to Stephen Welsh, a player two years younger but who is fully fit.

If we were discussing a creative type, like Jota, who also cramped on Saturday, I would expect him to start, as creatives are often swapped out in the second half, but managers are loathed to change their defensive line during a game.

I don’t think there is a definitive best choice here.  We do not know enough about Cameron and I know little about Betis, but my hunch would be to play Stephen.  The overriding factor is that we know Betis will run our back line significantly more than Ross County did on Saturday.  If Cameron’s muscles were in rebellion then, they will surely suffer in Seville.

Interesting punt by RB to spend so much on him.

And then you have the wages — £100K pw is seemingly the magic number.

That would seem to suggest that RB have a growth agenda.

Should be a good test for the team.

No CMcG is a blow if he was being played as an AM.

Less of a blow if he was keeping his current gig as our defensive pivot.

Big question — will TR and DT both play.

DT has looked a bit slow / leggy in recent games.

Might be time for a break.

“If others do not share that opinion they need not be concerned.”

That doesn’t sound like a very healthy state of affairs, especially when we’re talking about something as serious as gross mismanagement of our club

No one likes having their beliefs challenged, but it’s important that no group or organization allows itself to become an echo-chamber. Surely that’s just doing what the board are accused of?

    =/===

It’s not a healthy state at all but I’m pretty confident the way that concern is expressed is well balanced which is why CST adopted it after a vote by their members.

Not everyone will because it does challenge beliefs but recognising a wrong is the first essential step towards forgiving it. No wrong, nothing to forgive and I’m a big supporter of the healing power of forgiveness.

  4. No havin Ralston in defensive midfield…fgs..pickin the ball up from Joe Hart..no chance..wheres that coming from?

If McCarthy fit enough get him.i’d maybe play Soro in their too..he’s better with an experienced head around him.

Understand your maths logic but your point is dependent on the veracity of the claim that all STs were sold

Sorry but that makes no sense.

If for arguments sake Celtic sold 53,000 STs in 2020 and 50,000 in 2021 that means 3,000 remained unsold. So consequently there are 3,000 more seats available to general sale for each match, assuming a reduction in capacity for the red zone.

For the purposes of a sell-out, it makes no difference whether or not all STs were renewed, as long as the non-ST seats that go on general sale are all sold, it’s a sell-out.

  14. I don’t get the obsession with posters who always want to play defenders in central mid.

Number one requirement to play in CM is a good first touch and speed of thought, neither Ralston not the often mentioned Ajer have either of these attributes.

I played in CM myself, not particularly successfully I may add, but I never played with any defender who could do the role, being a strong tackler is a benefit but in the modern game in particular its way down the list of priorities.

  15. BOURNESOUPRECIPE on 15TH SEPTEMBER 2021 12:43 PM

Good question. I was unable to catch the last game where McCarthy came on as a sub, was he up to speed ? What if he struggles to play at the speed demanded by Ange ? Or. if he picks up an injury.

I had great hopes for Soro, but he seems to give away a lot of needless frees, picking up yellow cards.

By the way , I am not talking about Ralston for Thursdays game, but going forward. He has impressed me this season with his ability to get tackles in and he is comfortable on the ball.

Question; why is the home game against Ferencvaros on a Tuesday night ?

  16. Worried about our big Greek striker – radio silence since he arrived

If you can’t play a match until your match fit – how do you get match fit?

  17. Jinkyredstar on 15th September 2021 2:01 pm

  18. JINKYREDSTAR

Giakoumakis hasn’t kicked a ball since May. He just needs a bit more time to get up to speed. He’s not injured.

Maybe you’d like to think on that!?

Insensitive and offensive to whom? I have never heard of a Celtic player missing a big game for a religious holiday and that includes a good number of Islamic players.

I share your Tony Ralston thoughts, and because he’s popped up in the left channel an scored two great goals might have something to do with it. James McCarthy didn’t look fit when he got on IMO

  26. Some able to play, some unable to play, some long-term injured, some short-term injured, some up to speed, some not up to speed, some will flourish, some will not – the result of bringing a large number of new recruits into a depleted & disfunctional squad during the transfer window.

I have always said that this will be a re-build ‘suck it & see’ campaign and next season will probably follow suit.

Not a pessimistic appraisal, but a realistic one. Like changing direction in one of these mega container ships – the momentum of current travel has to be halted before setting and moving on a new course……we are still applying the brakes!!

  30. TOM MCLAUGHLIN @ 2:26 PM,

There is the Equality Act 2010.

Abada was quite within his rights to discuss time off at Religious “holidays” when discussing his contract of employment. Celtic had every right to agree to those terms.

    It seems that’s what’s happened.

Any necessary adjustments to benefits would be included in his contract.

To suggest he’s somehow being paid to pray is insensitive and offensive.

    GREENPINATA @ 2:25 PM,

Christians are expected to play football on Easter Sunday. It is a major day in the football Calendar.

No they are not, if a Christian chooses to have Easter Sunday off they can. They should make it clear to their employer before the begin employment to ensure no conflicts but are fully entitled to request time off.

Some Christian organisations do not insist on their members taking the day off work for Easter.

    Hail Hail

  31. JHB @ 2:30

Agree with that. I see our rebuild being 2 seasons.

I’m hoping that, whilst Ange works his magic on the pitch, he is suitably supported by person or persons identifying targets and sounding out terms.

On the pitch, I feel we are slightly ahead of schedule. Being Celtic, however, we are only 2 results away from catastrophe!

Who are these people or what dept in the club is responsible for resourcing this activity? I’m not having a go just seems to me that Ange is the only one at the club doing anything right now. That is very worrying.
