Welsh should start ahead of Carter-Vickers

286

Saturday’s game against Ross County was Cameron Carter-Vickers’ second run out since July, so there was no surprise to see him down with cramp in the second half.  Match fitness cannot be fully achieved without matches.  It will take a few weeks until he is fully primed.

This poses a question for Ange Postecoglou, does he play Cameron against Real Betis tomorrow or revert to Stephen Welsh, a player two years younger but who is fully fit.

If we were discussing a creative type, like Jota, who also cramped on Saturday, I would expect him to start, as creatives are often swapped out in the second half, but managers are loathed to change their defensive line during a game.

I don’t think there is a definitive best choice here.  We do not know enough about Cameron and I know little about Betis, but my hunch would be to play Stephen.  The overriding factor is that we know Betis will run our back line significantly more than Ross County did on Saturday.  If Cameron’s muscles were in rebellion then, they will surely suffer in Seville.

  1. Shame about the early kick-off otherwise Abada could have managed the second half, well most of it anyway.

Presumably CalMac is carrying an injury from playing for Scotland.

  2. We lost 3 , well 2 players on last transfer window day. We knew they were going. But didn’t replace them. Also we know we are weak with wingers. MJ is basically finished, at least medium term same with Dembele. JF missing more than playing. If McGregor is injured then don’t play him at Livingstone. 3 points on Sunday and no more injuries will do me. and a decent showing from players tonight. with no loss of confidence from a hammering.

“One of our non-exec directors, Brian Wilson, is currently a paid columnist at The Herald. His Wednesday piece tends to be dull as dishwater stuff, but, there is always a common theme. Brian absolutely detests the SNP. Every week, without fail, Brian gives Nicola and her troops a kicking. Today is no exception, on the vaccine passport issue. Brian will take his seat at CP along with the other entitled heid bummers. I have no idea what Brian Wilson brings to Celtic.”

    ——————————————————

Brian Wilson brings his knowledge and contacts as an ex-MP to the Board. As did previously John Reid and Michael Kelly as prominent local Labour figures. Many companies like to have people with such contacts and knowledge to assist their Boards in managing company business. In addition, he has written a very good History of the Club and I’d recommend you find time to read it.

Inadvertently, however, you might have made a good point.

In the current climate where the SNP have complete control of the Scottish political climate, it might serve us better to have an SNP man or an ex-SNP man on Board- should not be hard to find a willing volunteer- but I would not select Christine Graham, for example.

On second thoughts, tjough, since the Sturgeon wing of the Independence movement is not desperate to initiate any move towards Independence any time soon, we could do with a powerful Westminster based politico to support our Board- does anyone know any Tories who support Celtic?

What about Liam Fox or Jacob Rees Mogg? 😀

    —-

Spidey didn’t mention that issue. He discussed, as I recall, the deterioration in standards at Celtic. I made the connection.

My point is that continuing financial support of the club/team involves tacit approval of those overseeing the deterioration.

There are some on here who say they support the team but not the board. I say that, with the best will in the world, one cannot financially support the team/club – in the most common form of purchase of ST or individual match tickets – without this being taken by the custodians as tacit acceptance of their management.

  11. Even before the injuries I had little confidence in our ability to get a result in Seville

Having won away in Italy for the first time against Lazio with a so-called Dinosaur manager, we might do so for the first time in Spain too but so many better equipped teams have gone there and failed, I think it will be long odds against us.

    I would go with

    Hart

Juranovic CCV or Welsh Starfelt Montgomery

    Soro McCarthy

    Juranovic Soro Rogic McCarthy Jota

Shaw and Bitton & Henderson as midfield cover but no atacking subs unless we promote Moffat or Dawson from the b team

Think the numbers you used work for the season before last in terms of the numbers of tickets available for public sale. Normally it was possible to buy tickets in 2-3 weeks in advance for any home league game, usually in 116-117-118 and sometimes in 119 depending on the opposition. League and Scottish Cup sales were open to both STH and via the Public sale. This season the lower section of the South stand is all but empty, due to some kind of, possibly player related, protocol for both Euro and domestic matches. These are or were STH seats over many years. Not sure the numbers there, though could be substantial. Presumably season ticket holders from there have been moved to 116-117 and 118 in that there only a few seats in these areas available for general sale. If so, many season ticket holders do not appear to be going to the games, even on a Saturday afternoon. Ok you pays yer money and ye takes yer choices. Thing is, are Celtic seriously expecting 50,000 ST holders to buy tickets for next week’s match against Raith Rovers? Seems that they are.

Coneybhoy made the point earlier about HCTS membership and hoping to get SF and Final tickets as a result.

I withdrew from this some years ago as I was having £15/20 deducted from my bank for home cup ties for games v Arbroath/Morton/Alloa etc etc and never given a sniff of a semi final or final ticket.

The scheme became self defeating in that 25000 Cup SF and Final tickets won’t go into 30000+ HCTS members.

You commended the post as essential reading for those who believed you can support the team without giving your backing to Board wrongdoing.

You commended a post that discussed ways and means to make the TEAM stronger and which gave no recommendations for Board change as essential reading for those with that false view.

That’s like recommending a book on whaling to gardeners.

Spidey 101 may have views on your issue but he did not give them in that post and it is wrong to hijack it to a purpose for which it had no intention.

There are many of us who know that paying to see Celtic will give money that the Board can then control but still do not buy into the simplistic view that you can starve a Board out without seriously harming the long term prospects of the team.

Just as I pay my taxes to the Government but disagree with some of the uses to which they are put, so I can pay money to Celtic and disapprove of any excessive pay for CEOs and Board Director remuneration AND lying to supporters.

Main difference is I get a vote on the government, but mines goes towardsa non-governing party at both ULK and Scottish level, but I don’t get a vote on the Board.

I have said many times- small scale, disorganised, wishful thinking on a Board or in a personal boycott, will achieve precisely nothing. it takes long term planning, perseverance, an ability to persuade people to your point of view (as opposed to calling them Board backers) and long term resilience to take on an undemocratic plc.

I commend the developments led by Auldheid and The CelticTryst as offering a prospect of a return, but I think the oft vaunted (on social media) Bhoycott has already failed.

I acknowledge the constructive criticisms you’ve made.

    One point particularly struck a chord;

‘an ability to persuade people to your point of view (as opposed to calling them Board backers)’

That’s a fair point which resonates from the perspective of the Independence debate, in terms of there being no point continually berating opponents for being opponents, eg verbally abusing No voters as ‘Nawbags’. You can’t change people’s mind by abusing them.

What I would say is that I take the view that – to mangle an Auldheid analogy – I am a starfish on the beach and if I can do my own small bit then it maybe adds a bit of weight.

I don’t think there’s any realistic credible prospect of a bhoycott. I wouldn’t advocate one.

I choose to withdraw my custom as it’s the only practical weapon I have and which I believe that our custodians may eventually understand.

You obviously don’t agree as to the likely effectiveness of this in ‘starving them out’. I agree an unfortunate by-product is financial shortfall to the club and, ultimately, the team on the pitch. Another side of this is that it gives me a sense of coming to terms with myself given my inner conflict as to events since 2011.

With regard to “ You commended a post that discussed ways and means to make the TEAM stronger and which gave no recommendations for Board change as essential reading for those with that false view.”

I’m not clear what you mean. I believe that persons who don’t agree with me should read Spidey’s piece as for me he succinctly summarised my concerns and I hope that they may be persuaded by his argument.

Just got a text saying that there will be a general sale for the RR match on the 17th. No sign of that on the official website though. My sympathies re Cup final tickets, simply not enough to go round, not for a support like ours. What we have here though is a breakdown in communications this season, the websites say one thing, the reality says another, which makes it difficult to plan ahead, and I am thinking mainly families, school groups, as well as individuals. Not to mention TicketMaster.

Ernie, I am a Celtic fan, you are a Celtic fan, Brian Wilson is a Celtic fan.

But, just what value does Brian Wilson add to Celtic just now ? He gets the club tie, sits in the directors VIP area, and gets all the other benefits. Being a journalist and NAT hater is not relevant to his position at Celtic.

Yes . Youth players included . It’s the way to ease their transition if they are to make it . Also, if the game plan is to succeed we must stick with it . It seems Ange will not depart from Angeball so we must become the best at it we can possibly be .

I also think it likely that any player who doesn’t fit his system will not be at the club this time next season .

  25. CELTIC MAC

Thing is, are Celtic seriously expecting 50,000 ST holders to buy tickets for next week’s match against Raith Rovers? Seems that they are

What? When Celtic have a sale for a cup game they first of all open it to ST holders. Those ST holders on HCTS pay automatically by direct debit on a specified date. Other ST holders have until a deadline date to purchase their seat.

After deadline day, seats that are not taken up by ST holders go into the general sale pot which is then opened up to non-ST holders.

Of course Celtic don’t expect all 50,000 ST holders to attend the Raith Rovers game, but they have to give all 50,000 the option to buy their seat.

Why is all this so difficult to understand? I’m beginning to appreciate the problems encountered by ticket office staff in these situations when faced with this level of ignorance.
