What a missed opportunity

347

The morning after Ferencvaros reached the Champions League group stage at Molde’s expense, after counter-attacking their way to a win at Celtic Park does not feel any more satisfying than it would be if they were eliminated.  The Hungarians will find the ‘real’ competition devastatingly difficult, but they will console themselves with more money than they could dream of a year ago.  Money that could have been ours.

The solution to our pandemic crisis lay in our own hands.  What a missed opportunity.  October will bring difficult and consequential challenges, Celtic need to use the pain of this failure to ensure that on Hallowe’en we’re not looking back on what might have been.

  1. Similar to the UEFA Champions League, the prize money received by the clubs is divided into fixed payments based on participation and results, and variable amounts that depend of the value of their TV market.[20]

For the 2019–20 season, group stage participation in the Europa League awarded a base fee of €2,920,000. A victory in the group pays €570,000 and a draw €190,000. Also, each group winner earns €1,000,000 and each runner-up €500,000. Reaching the knock-out stage triggers additional bonuses: €500,000 for the round of 32, €1,100,000 for the round of 16, €1,500,000 for the quarter-finals and €2,400,000 for the semi-finals. The losing finalists receive €4,500,000 and the champions receive €8,500,000.[21]

    Preliminary round: €220,000

    First qualifying round: €240,000

    Second qualifying round: €260,000

    Third qualifying round: €280,000

    Play-off round elimination: €300,000

Base fee for group stage: €2,920,000

    Group match victory: €570,000

    Group match draw: €190,000

    Group winners: €1,000,000

    Group runners-up: €500,000

    Round of 32: €500,000

based on this Cetic PLC must have earned at least 12m euro for participation and winning a europa leage group and reaching the 32,

Bumped into him in my local a good few times and always talked about the ‘Tic.

No matter how hard you were on the team, results, the board, he always countered “but it’s the Celtic”.

It was later on that I found out he was Tommy Grant, shareholder and director of CFC.

    Are you Tommy Grant?

The socks and the squad are his reasons for thinking that.

He also said its the first time he had seen the photo which I thought was nice.

Phil honestly, life is a journey.

I was often the most rebellious mental crazy bampot hun hating teenager and 20 year old. and a proper republican. But hard working and determined,

    I was active. I read a lot.

You go though 50 years of everything we have, and I think I am ok at business,

So this current day celtic is better in everything that the1992 version.

    I am not an apolgiest.

PL is paid too too much for an enterprise of this size. We are only a £100m turnover company.

He earns more than the CEO’s of any other Scottish CEO I can find.

However, I defer to Saint Francis now, give me the power to accept those things I cannot change.

  13. talking about ayrshire ,1969 was going down to rugby park for a game against kilmarnock, i was only 16 was in my cousin peters car we got held up in traffic, but we were only about a mile from the stadium, it was only 2-45 we would have made the kick off ,until these 2 unfriendly plods seen our scarves and stopped us, they went through our car like a dose of salts, checked everything, brakes ,lights, exhaust, wiper blades, they eventually let us go at about 3-15, so we missed quite a bit of the game, but at least we won in the end, if we had been wearing rangers scarves would they have stopped us no neither do i.H.H.

Could be Seamill, though judging from the relative position of the goals in the background, and the shadow created by wee Jimmy, and the direction of view adopted by John Clark, the OHG and Charlie G, the Bhoys are not looking 90 degrees to the perpendicular of the shore. You’re talking late afternoon there…

  19. Great post by TONTINE TIM earlier where he mentioned the 1-0 victory in the replayed Scottish Cup game against Hibs, where John Clark scored the winner in extra time.

I was at that game with my Dad and some lads from the local CYMS.

After the match we wandered around looking for a chippie and by the time we got to Waverley we had missed the last passenger train to Glasgow.

We somehow all squeezed into the guards van of the Glasgow mail train and got off at Queen Street.

No buses to Garthamlock at that time of the night/morning, so we managed to get on a bus to Cranhill and walked the couple of miles (or so) to Garthamlock.

As we approached our house I could see my Maw standing at the garden gate, arms folded, and fizzing mad!

    It was about 1:30 am.

Mum kept me off school next day as I was knackered, but what a tale I had to tell.

    Great memories!

I seen Tom Grant a couple of times last season when leaving my seat and heading round to exits at end of North Stand

I was thinking he must have a ticket in north Stand or round at Celtic end ?

He used to used to own the Railway tavern in Denny selling it to Dom Sullivan

Is he not an architect ? Or something?

  21. Midtyland miss a pen with 9 mins to go which would have put them 2.1 ahead on agg.

Eric is playing and has been booked.

That was my first away game, well technically away since I lived about 20 minutes walk away

  23. Midtjylland now 2.1 ahead.

It was a ‘re taken pen, by a different player, after VAR called an infringement on first pen.

  24. NORRIEM

I remember the pub in Denny, but don’t remember what his occupation was.

His wife’s family owned a chippie in Condorrat and she worked there, so Tommy was in the local often.

We drank in the Masonic Arms!

Or the ok corral as it was sometimes called.

  25. Midtjylland now 3.1 ahead.

Only a minute to go so looks like Eric will be playing Champions league football.

I’d imagine they will struggle to get more than a point or so.

    Night all.

  26. JNP…VAR…from what I’ve seen so far, is an interpretive disgrace that only benefits the “bigger team”…especially where SlySports has an interest

  27. THELURKINTIM on 30TH SEPTEMBER 2020 9:47 PM

Yes, initially I thought VAR would be useful/helpful.

    I’ve changed my mind.

It was supposed to be used for clear and obvious errors, that phrase appears to be very subjective.

  28. So, let me get this straight. Midtjylland were formed in 1999. We were formed in 1888. They have a ground capacity of 12,000. We have a capacity of 60,000. They are captained by a Celtic reject. They finished 14 points ahead of Copenhagen, who eliminated us last season from the E.L. They were trounced 4-2 and 3-1 by Sevco last season in the E.L. Yet they are in the Champions League Group Stage earning circa £30M, while we have to overcome a Bosnian team away to get into the E.L. Group Stage.

What is wrong with this picture? It looks as if this little Danish team is more ambitious than we are.
