What did Juve learn from Celtic on Tuesday?

1080

On watching Celtic on Tuesday I wondered, ‘What will Juventus learn from this performance?’  Their scout will have left with a few notes.

Celtic can break quickly and effectively.  Both Hooper goals came as a result of moving the ball the length of the field, mostly on the deck, at pace.

Their threat from corner kicks was re-emphasised.  Charlie Mulgrew delivers the ball with sufficient pace to benefit from unpredictable movement, beyond the anticipated swerve.  This will be difficult for defenders, keeper and attackers to meet, but Celtic players clearly put a lot of work into practicing getting onto the end of these crosses.

Hopefully the scout will have learned nothing about how we will defend against Juventus as we were somewhat erratic early on against United and were not pressed thereafter.

Juventus are rightly favourites but this this is a thankless tie for them, especially when the first message delivered is ‘Don’t concede corners or free kicks in wide positions’.

They will also be alert to the dangers of being caught forward when Celtic can break effectively.  Celtic conceded through this mistake against Spartak last month but I wouldn’t expect us to leave as much empty space in defence at any point against Juventus.

My main worry about Celtic is over how much practice they are putting into penalty kicks….

I doubt that they can build on top of the club deck.

That shiny new supporting beam which Murray installed-he charged them so much, btw,it must have been solid gold-won’t support the added loads.

    I like Green. He

BTW,gold isn’t much use as a support beam.

“Over 25,000 RIFC shares have been bought in the last 24hrs which is quite remarkable seeing as prior to that there had been no ‘buys’ in the last 12 days.”

Are you a Sevco publicist ;-)

    I see it as 25,000 shares sold…….

I like Green. He should get his own show, instead of simply appearing on everyone elses.

And Sevco fans won’t be much use as a support when the truth hits them, eventually.

  4. I was under the impression that ALL avenues had been investigated for increasing the seating at their midden by Murray. Did they not lower the pitch to shoehorn more seats in as the only option available?

I was in their shoe-box when we played a cup match against Aberdeen (I think). I’m only just short of 6 foot but my knees were crammed against the seat in front and I couldn’t see the nearside touchline.

  10. Regarding Slovak and Czech postions on Scotland’s place in the EU:

Mr Lajcak, whose country was formed 20 years ago after the dissolution of Czechoslovakia, said the possibility of Scotland becoming independent was “not for us to judge”.

But he told BBC Radio Scotland’s Good Morning Scotland programme the debate about the country’s future was “something we are following quite closely” in Slovakia. “We are interested,” he said. “We know that our case is one of interest.”

When asked if a new country would continue as a member of the EU, Mr Lajcak said: “As far as I know there is a discussion about exactly this issue going on in Brussels. There is no clear answer to this.

“There should be an evaluation of the readiness… but in the end it’s a political decision made by all the member states.”

Mr Lajcak said that when Slovakia came into existence in 1993, “many people were sceptical about the chances for us to exist, let alone prosper”.

But he added: “Right now everybody understands and acknowledges we have been a success story.

So the general feeling is there was skepticism at the beginning, people were not convinced that a split of Czechoslovakia was the best idea, but right now we are doing well, Czech Republic is doing well, and our friendship is better than ever.”

Mr Lajcak was clearly supportive of a new member being possible but he doesn’t know if it is cut and dried and quite frankly none of them appear to have a clear answer. He says it is a question for member states but that appears to be something people dispute or are not sure of.

The BBC DID travel to Prague as well to interview TWO Czech politicians and Mr Lajcak from Slovakia in Bratislava – you can see the brief interviews here – http://youtu.be/K3FtQ0SlDW0

Mr Lajcak is supportive of separation from the Slovak point of view which is why he “sides” to some degree with Scotland’s right to autonomy. As a small country I would expect nothing other from a Slovak. Slovaks have been looked upon as the “little brothers” of the former alliance hence the reason why the support separation not only of Scotland but of other nations in my opinion. I could be wrong there but just from the people I talk to they support Scotland going solo but they find Scots to be ridiculous because they desperately cling to union – Slovaks who have been and seen Scotland ask me with sheer disbelief “How are you not independent?” and I say how long have you got?

Too many reasons to explain I’m afraid.

Karel Schwarzenberg (standing for Czech President shortly) said on the BBC – the international weight of both republics is less than Czechoslovakia was – a Czech view but not one held by many Slovaks. If I may say so this is a typical Unionist view over here but one that is not embraced by Slovaks who with no major resources (people were amazed when I told them the Whisky industry alone is worth 1 Billion quid to the Scottish economy a year) will not countenance a reunion because they want to govern their own affairs for good or ill and are not interested in being “little brothers” any longer.

Therein lies the difference between Scots and Slovaks. Scots appear to be happy to be the “little brothers” but in fact it is worse because like their attitude to our football, in the UK we really don’t count until they can take money and resources from us.

The second interview suggests that unforeseen problems will come from a split (as they did with Czechoslovakia) – which is fair. Go step by step and see what happens. A fair assessment because there will always been unforeseen problems in something this big.

The BBC did indeed interview these people but I’m not sure it was as blatantly pro-Union as Mountainbhoy suggested but what is clear is that the Tories have become the biggest bunch of hypocrites over a referendum issue.

They pushed and pushed the SNP to have that referendum NOW NOW NOW. Why wait? They said. And yet Cameron has done the same thing (if not a worse thing because he required re-election to get his referendum on the EU). A 5 year plan no less. Labour as usual do not have a clue what to do and the Liberals as we know will blow with the wind.

The only future for Scotland IS Independence and freedom to run our own affairs otherwise we’ll be bled dry and then given it with nothing left.

I’m truly sorry so many people don’t see it that way.

  11. Juventus –

    This morning’s gossip ——-

The Lisandro Lopez thing is not done and dusted ——- some claim it’s a money thing , others claim that Juve are trying to shift Matri or Quagliarella before they do the deal with Lyon ..

    Drogba —no chance .

Anelka —— maybe —– but his wages would necessitate the departure of Matri or Quagliarella.

Some claim that Fiorentina are interested in Quagliarella but Juve would prefer to offload Matri .

    We’ll see .

Torrential rain , I hate winter -way down south.

  12. Gents

I really don’t think enough is being made of the Stasi like approach to the suppression of evidence by the SFA in the Sheils case

Refs have been proven to fabricate evidence and be downright mendacious when called to explain their actions

The protection that they are afforded is unhealthy and contrary to any notion of sporting integrity

IMO they are overpaid , under qualified chancers who have been allowed to develop an air of untouchability

What is happening with Sheils is a damn disgrace and totally unacceptable

  13. Evening ghuys,

First time poster! Been a regular visitor to the site for just over a year (when I first noticed the site it was the time when Paul was on blinding form each and every day in the run up to their administration and I was absolutely hooked).

It was sooo much fun being able to amaze my mates with facts and predictions about the deid club’s demise when they didn’t have a scooby, we all have Paul to thank for that! Everyone else who contributes regularly to the site as well I would also like to thank because their really doesn’t seem to be anywhere else quite like it.

Unfortunately I don’t get to many games because I play myself most saturdays (plus I live in the north-east, got a wife, kid etc) but I try to keep up to date as much as I can and this site has allowed me to do so more than ever before. Hopefully I can contribute in a positive way to the discussions etc that take place here.

    Anyways…regarding Hooper.

I know a lot’s been said already but this is definitely a crossroads in his career. I would be really surprised (and quite disappointed) if he chose to go to Norwich rather than stay with us. Playing in the ELP is one thing (which is highly overrated in my opinion anyway) but for a club like Norwich? I don’t think the lad will ever be the top striker at one of the Manchester clubs or Chelsea but I could understand if the likes of Liverpool, Arsenal or Tottenham came calling and he was guaranteed European football of some sort. Let’s face it, as nice a club as Norwich is, their biggest games of the season are the home and away fixtures involving the top 3 or 4 clubs, and how many of those games are they likely to win or even draw. A few years of stability in the EPL might see them reaching 8th or 9th in the league (perhaps becoming another Fulham for example) but I don’t see how that could excite a player who is already used to playing in semi-finals, cup finals, champions league games and all the time knowing that he is the number one striker at the club.

It’s obvious these days that money rules the game but any players who TRULY love the game would surely cherish medals, memories and fan worship much more than a hefty wage playing for a club who plod along from year to year (no disrespect to Norwich but I’m just trying to make a point).

Let’s put it this way, you’re not going to boast to your grandkids about your bank balance are you, you want to tell them about the night when the greatest team in the world were beaten 2-1 in front of 60,000 at Celtic Park and millions watching around the globe.

You want to tell them about the goals scored against the deid club, about the goals scored in cup finals that helped the team win etc.

I think Gary should consider his options very carefully in the summer and only move away from Celtic if he can be confident that he’s moving to a bigger club on a bigger stage. In my opinion there aren’t many who have done so (in recent years only the KoK’s I would say) and he has a chance to be part of a very special period in the club’s history.

In saying this, if he wants to go, don’t stand in his way and get the maximum amount available (10m at the very least).

Oh, and on another note, I hope I don’t regret saying this but I have a very good feeling about Sunday…we will definitely raise our game against the buddies!
