On watching Celtic on Tuesday I wondered, ‘What will Juventus learn from this performance?’ Their scout will have left with a few notes.
Celtic can break quickly and effectively. Both Hooper goals came as a result of moving the ball the length of the field, mostly on the deck, at pace.
Their threat from corner kicks was re-emphasised. Charlie Mulgrew delivers the ball with sufficient pace to benefit from unpredictable movement, beyond the anticipated swerve. This will be difficult for defenders, keeper and attackers to meet, but Celtic players clearly put a lot of work into practicing getting onto the end of these crosses.
Hopefully the scout will have learned nothing about how we will defend against Juventus as we were somewhat erratic early on against United and were not pressed thereafter.
Juventus are rightly favourites but this this is a thankless tie for them, especially when the first message delivered is ‘Don’t concede corners or free kicks in wide positions’.
They will also be alert to the dangers of being caught forward when Celtic can break effectively. Celtic conceded through this mistake against Spartak last month but I wouldn’t expect us to leave as much empty space in defence at any point against Juventus.
My main worry about Celtic is over how much practice they are putting into penalty kicks….

So pat the rat thinks the ball boys “behaviour is quite disgraceful”. Aye right. A 17stone athlete cant lift an 8 stone 16 year old?? The boys parents should sue Hazard for assault and Snevin for deformation of character.
Hows ur hearing these days P??

Was there the night Dixie blootered the penalty into space – the ball has never been found!
Then on the way home to Ayrshire after the game we ran into a coo on the A77 near Fenwick – the car, and the coo were write-offs!
What an end to a sh*te night!
—————————————————————–
Could have been the coo that was jumping over the moon at the time, and Dixie shot it doon, did you look for the Ba’ ?
Naw, I’ve not had a drop, this is normal ;-)
Jungle Jim.
There’s no space before a full stop either! :)
Man U pay £15 mil for Zaha from Crystal Palace, that’s your opening bid for Wanyama.
The dreaded penalty shoot-out…
There’s a chapter in Soccernomics devoted to the Man Utd-Chelsea Champions League Final shoot-out in Moscow that our coaching staff should be reading.
Chelsea had a dossier from a Basque economist called Ignacio Palacios-Huerta, who had for some reason kept a database on thousands of penalty kicks.
From his database, he was able to tell Chelsea that:
1) Edwin Van Der Saar more often than not dives to the kicker’s natural side, eg a right-footed player naturally shoots to the keeper’s right.
2) The vast majority of Van Der Saar’s penalty saves come when the ball is kicked at mid-height, so hit high or low.
3) If Cristiano Ronaldo stops during his run-up, 85% of the time he hits it to the keeper’s right, so don’t dive early.
4) The team that shoots first wins 60% of penalty shoot-outs, so go first if you win the toss.
Man Utd won the toss and elected to shoot first.
During the shoot-out, both teams scored their first two penalties, with both Chelsea players shooting to the keeper’s left, Ballack high and Belleti low.
Then Ronaldo stepped up to take United’s third. He stopped during his run-up, shot right, and Cech saved it.
Chelsea’s next four penalty takers all hit the ball to Van Der Saar’s left, with only John Terry missing – he hit the post with Van Der Saar diving in the other direction.
Chelsea’s final penalty, from Nicolas Anelka, was the only one that did not follow Palacios-Huerta’s advice – he shot to the keeper’s right, and mid-height, and Van Der Saar saved it.
Maybe Van Der Saar psyched Anelka out – before he shot, the keeper pointed to his left, as if telling Anelka he knew that was where he was planning to put it.
So anyway, a database like that clearly would not guarantee winning a penalty shoot-out, but you could argue that the advice from Palacios-Huerta worked perfectly – if only Terry hadn’t hit the post Chelsea would have won and the last penalty did not follow the advice.
I certainly think it would be worthwhile for Celtic to have some similar information on the Juventus keeper and possible takers.
Oh!, the Inter game, me and ma Da were offered £25 each for our terrace tickets before the game (that wis a shed load of money then, I dreamed of a joab earning £20 a week).
Ma poor Da was in pain saying naw, whit a man.
At least something can be gained from grammar correction, unlike falling out over a self proclaimed King of all Ballboys who was #needed #for #timewasting.
Who cares?
Damo-interesting stuff .
I’d take a penalty shoot out with Juventus right now.
Juve and penalties .
I am going to the game in Torino with a guy who supports Torino .
He has a big framed photo of Pirlo missing a penalty against Torino . He has conveniently forgotten that Juve won the game 3-0 .
steinreignedsupreme- McMillan isn’t even literate enough to write his name never mind an obituary, that sordid work was from the disgraceful Robert McElroy.
Mo Bangura down another snake in his ambition to reach the EPL.
Stuart McCall to be Scotland assistant coach…..
So, TBJ… I offer a hand in an attempt to put any bad feeling aside.
…Unless of course, you plan on doing me for assault, that is! :)
A repost,as I’m fresh when I post but it’s early morning in UK and don’t understand what all the kerfuffle was about, read much worse on here from many but even South of Tunis was vehement about this, unless as I’ve said, is it about “Hilary” ??
Thank you hen1rik,
Your 2 large posts (SFA etc) and lastly 21.43-Don’t let it be forgot might just have made my day (certainly have kept me in as here it’s midday). Why I’ve been a Celtic fan nearly 50 years now.Took tears….The Celtic Way!!!
It has certainly been refreshing after all the “up in the air” stuff since Kojo and alta.. I don’t see it? I’m sure I will be corrected but as I took it Kojo gave an alternative view on MLK who may have “acted below the belt ” for a minister of religion etc., So what.. not the first..doesn’t change what he did for human rights,ok maybe not as saintly as I had thought but I can check up and make my own decision if it bothers me.
The SD gave a film review where the black star supposedly later said “great I was able to shoot all the whities”. Surely this is as racist as the other way around and my god the “fan would have been hit” if so.
Unless the anger on sight is over something about “Hilary–and a heid problem” of which I know nothing.
I enjoy learning things on here but have no time for other than national SPORTING rivalries. Anthems, sins of the past-passed on. NO! Remembered YES! Change the future, that’s it. The Celtic Way… a fair playing field in Scotland,if only so much energy and organisation could be put into this.
The footballing authorities must be changed but the present rules adhered to until changed in an open manner.
Please everyone concentrate on this and enjoy the football and the craic.

!!Bada Bing!!
I’m glad I’m not the only one who thinks so!
Couldn’t believe Nevin this morning on BBC breakfast news…the normally placid, tow the party line, don’t upset Rob persona had disappeared and he went for the sports journo Mike Bushell(who admittedly is a prize plonker) and took the wind right from his sails!
Would never see him as argumentative when reporting up here!
Shameless!
corkcelt,
I’d be bursting with pride if we’re level with Juve after 180 minutes, but the way we’ve struggled to find a reliable penalty taker over the past two-three seasons…

The key thing with penalty kicks is they are very simple. Hit the ball low, hard and into the corner, and you score.
The problem starts when you over-complicate it: Psyching out the keeper, stalled run ups, sending him the wrong way, analysing his last 318 penalties, 68% chance he’ll dive to the side of kicker’s favoured foot, all that stuff effectively just gives the player taking the kick the excuse for missing.
Corner + Low + Hard = Goal.
If you don’t have the confidence to put the ball in the corner with a free kick from 12 yards, you oughtn’t be anywhere near the action.

and Green states there will be no profit this year on a turnover of somewhere between £25m and £30m,

surely in year 1, with a strong (smelling) customer base , 40,000+ attendances, and a low wage bill, surely he should be making money, surely.

One of the reasons for all payments to be in contracts is if a player is fined, on a weekly basis, by SFA/SPL/SFL etc is that the correct amount of money is recovered.

It takes me all my time to get the numbers in your blog id ….
Is there any truth in the rumour Dundee United ball boys will wear Craig Whyte masks and laugh at the zombies when the ball is out of play?
We should be told!
