What did we learn last night?

902

So what did we learn last night?  For a start, when we need to, we can defend effectively and shut up shop, last night was our fourth clean sheet in Europe this season.  The 4-5-1 formation, deployed for the opening 65 minutes, was not effective at producing attacking opportunities, although this may be as much to do with personnel as formation.

Emilio Izaguirre was swamped every time the ball went near him, which did little to settle his confidence.  It was wise for Neil Lennon to hook him and drop Charlie Mulgew back.  I felt sorry for Miku, who looked like a player in an unfamiliar line-up.  He is not a lone target man but will do well when we get the ball to his feet. He was only asked to play that role due to injuries Hooper, Stokes and Samaras and will only do so again under similar circumstances. By contrast, Hooper looked the part once he came on. He bullied defenders as effectively as he does in the SPL, a real pleasing point for me.

Victor Wanyama needs to improve his sharpness to make the most of his composure and tackling ability at this level.  The perpetual motion of Champions League teams means a fraction of a second off-pace can compromise the defensive formation.

Did you notice how every time Commons got the ball he was thinking “goal”? His turn before crossing from the left belied the meagre money we paid for him. He is every inch a Champions League player.

James Forrest was played out of the game by the full back. He/Neil needed to find a resolution to this challenge but it didn’t happen. He tried to knock the ball round the outside and pass on the inside a couple of times, which was over-ambitions, to say the least. I don’t think we saw him drop the shoulder and take the player on with the ball, which is a pity, as I’m sure he had the taking of his marker. Both Forrest and Wanyama will be stronger on Match Day 2.

The first objective from our return to Champions League football was that we would be able to compete at this level.  That achieved, we can look forward to Moscow in 12 days time.

  3. How many times are we going to hear proto-huns say something like: “Hearts can’t pay their wages…the SPL is heading for oblivion…because you voted ra Rangers oat ra league!” trotted out ad nauseum before our heads explode skannerz style?

Hearts have had problems paying wages on time for years- its nothing to do with the demise of der hun, more to do with Romanov and his goons.

I got in, no problem. I’ve never had a problem getting into CP. I make sure I don’t have a problem by going in early, as I’m aware that there can be problems when lots of people cut it fine. Machines break down. That’s what makes them machines.

  8. My Wee Barcelona Story.

I’ve been holding onto this story since the last time we played Barcelona at the Nou Camp. Like many of you I bought into the more than a club philosophy and how celtic and barca were kindred spirits of sorts! As many of you who don’t have tickets and are wondering what to expect then this is what myself and my brother experienced.

I had been twice before to the Nou Camp, the first trip just happened to be Henriks first game where he scored on his debut and the second with my soon to be inlaws. Where I asked my future father in law for the now Mrs P’s hand , while he was dazed being up in the God’s!!!

I arranged to meet my brother on the Ramblas and bumped into Chairman John Reid where I asked him if there were going to be any more tickets for celtic fans and he said he didn’t think so. The next morning we went up to the Nou Camp ticket office and queued for an hour only to be told that Barcelona would not be selling tickets to anyone with a british or irish passport, however there were italians, japanese and germans all getting tickets and security was strict.

Well pissed off and out of ideas we went into town and so happened to get talking to a socio (barcelona member) he said if we went with him he would buy tickets online and sell them to us. We ended up paying €125 for each ticket and they were for the barcelona section (most of it is with roughly 8,000 given to celtic).

We learned later from the media that there was going to be rigorous checks made to stop fans getting into other areas, which had us worried. Our investment in 2 barca scarves and our limited spanish conversation got us in and we watched the match up in the gods.If you remember the match was over after the first leg in glasgow.

My experience was poor as there were another 7,000 fans that the Catalans made paella for, pool tables etc and made watch the match on tv with a large police presence to prevent them going to the game without tickets. When in the stadium i could see the small amount of fans but could hear them singing in the gods. The crowd figure for the night was 77,000 so these other fans could have comfortably seen the match but the Catalans only have one song which they sing when they win. My opinion is that 15-20,000 celtic fans would have out sung them and it would have been like a home game for us but they wouldn’t have that then would they!!!

So when some of you get all misty eyed over our ties to Barcelona FC remember Paolos Boots experience. Barcelona, a lovely city and great football club wasted on the Catalans….

  9. So, a so called ‘offensive’ banner was displayed on July 24th yet it takes until Sep 20th for a charge to be brought?

Methinks some SevCo supporters have been trawling the net looking for anything to complain about to their pals at the SFA

I sincerely hope Celtic say “We will answer the charge when you do something about their sectarian chanting on a week by week basis”

Returning from the game last night,iI think we need to look at where our young team are at the moment when looking at CL results ,I also think some are over critical of some of our players at times (myself included) but surley backing is always better than barricking .

No player can do everything right in any game let alone CL games ,ten CL debutantes last night and some key players missing 0-0 is not the worst result to start the campaign .

Lenny is also learning and he said as much in his post match interview ,IMO no one let us down last night on that field ,they all tried their best and they deserve our backing in all CL games and they will be getting mine

    Hail hail

Returning from the game last night, I was listening to Talksport and a guy claiming to be a Celtic fan phoned in with a scathing attack on some of the players and I think he was out of order .

can someone enlighten me as to why scott kamikaze brown got high marks ,he constantly played passes to players that left them in trouble, especially to izzy who then got stick from crowd,ha wasn’t having a great game but with brown firing in chest level passes at breakneck speed he had no chance, hopefully when ledley and kayal are fit brown can be sent to a geriatric surgeon to sort out his hips, and we can start playing with a bit more freedom

  17. I was proud of them last night. Must confess, the scars of hidings past run deep and I am happy we didn’t panic. Thought a tiny bit more composure in passing could have got us the win.

Re the Zombie banner…………it’s just a pity we don’t get the same deaf, dumb and blind compliance officer that attends Sevco matches. Or do they not have compliance officers at div 3 games?

  19. As I said earlier,Sammi was the man we missed most of all last night, but I really think if Paddy was playing in the midfield, with Brown and Wanyama who both were colossus,I think he would had been the key to pick the lock.Play the playmaker.HH

  20. The Battered Bunnet on

The demise of Rangers and emergence of the Sevco club presents Scotland and Scottish society with what might very well be a once in a lifetime opportunity stop football being used as a platform for hateful attitudes.

The SFA, SPL and SFL can fully implement UEFA’s guidelines and their own longstanding rules on acceptable behaviour at football, comfortable that using footballing sanctions to penalise unacceptable behaviour at games will have little effect on the outcomes of their competitions, with minimal flak from any claims of whataboutery.

Certainly they have a 2 or 3 year window to sustain any necessary action before the likelihood of Sevco competing for the first time in the top league. Attitudes and behaviours CAN be challenged and changed in that period.

Should the football authorities take this opportunity and relentlessly penalise clubs for unlawful behaviour amongst their supporters?

If not now, then never, I should think.
