What did we learn yesterday?

406

There’s a question I have heard over a long time from football people, “What did we learn today?”  It is usually asked by a coach who wants his player(s)  to figure out the change he wants to make.  So what did we learn yesterday?

If any doubt remains that the current Celtic squad are very effective as 3-5-2 and relatively ineffective as 4-2-3-1, it can only be from someone who was on Twitter most of the game.

Gordon Strachan endured some torrid criticisms as Celtic manager.  I am sure this informed his pre-match comments on the “Twitterati’s” verdict on the tactical deployment against Ferencvaros.  Gordon assured us Neil Lennon knows the players better than anyone, especially online fans, and he picked his strongest team to start on Wednesday and again on Sunday.

On any level, this is true.  Neil Lennon knows his squad better than any of us, just has Gordon did in his day.  Both men are also tactically better versed than most of us could ever hope to be.  But the sight of two central defenders making rampaging runs at different times late in the game against Motherwell, surely will convince the final doubters: three at the back, two up front and leave the middle five fluid.

  4. Neil Lennon & McCartney on

For all those denigrating Greg Taylor, he showed great skill at the build up for our 2nd goal. Tricky footwork to control and then regain the ball when facing two Well players, whilst on the ground. He then crossed the ball to the other wing to Ajer, who picked out Ajeti with a slide~rule pass. The rest you know!

Taylor was substituted on 62 mins ,we got the second at 74 mins , that would have been some feat 😜😁😁😁😁

  6. Hello again all you young rebels.

    Big Jimmy

Great to see you back on Jimmy, don’t let the chumps stop

    you posting.

Regarding that all green strip, thank goodness I wasn’t havering

although I didn’t like it that much, perhaps why I remembered it.

Worst strip in my lifetime must have been that multi coloured

effort with I think the Peoples advert on the front…I think.

You’d a thought it was designed by Picasso on speed.

  7. Have the majority of posters here all reached the Grumpy Old Man stage of their life at the same time ?

  8. A quick YouTube check on Shane Duffy. Looks to be very old school uncompromising no frills CB. Very different to the classy ball-playing central defenders we’ve had over the last years such van Dyke , Denyar , Boyata ,Jozo ,Biton? Ajer .

  9. RON BACARDI..

YOU are one of the Posters on here in recent weeks/months that respond to some of the main Chumps Postson here…which only serves to encourage them, and YOU give them the “Attention” that they seek !

CHUMP No.1…He has NEVER made any attempt to visit Glasgow and see Celtic for feckin DECADES…despite having the time and money to do so. Every few months he feels that he just HAS to remind us all again as to how he got his “MONIKER”….and of how much HE ” Luvs us all”……Crap and more Crap…rinse and repeat every feckin few weeks….I dont want to even type his name……that would be him getting attention again.

He doesnt realise that NO ONE in their right mind on here, couldnt give a feck about his Moniker…or his tedious boring Crap from 50 years ago…this is due to him having being NO Where near Celtic Park for decades.

    …….

    CHUMP No.2..

This is the Chump who thinks that he KNOWS EVERYTHING about Celtic and how Celtic should play, and who should be playing…and Fitba in general…HE thinks that being a Celtic feckin Pools Agent makes him so much more knowledgeable than anyone else !

He has stated on a number of occasions about being a Pools Agent, and season ticket holder….and how he is CLOSER to Celtic than most others on here…What utter PISH !

HE is also the very same CHUMP who advised ME and everyone else a couple of weeks ago that “GAMBLING is a MUGS Game”………while at the very same feckin time he takes money from folk for the Celtic Pools…the last time that I looked…to buy a Pool Ticket…is feckin GAMBLING !

You couldnt make up this Crap.

Do yourself a favour…STOP responding and engaging with those Two Chumps…but its your choice obviously…IF we ALL ignored these Chumps this Blog would soon be rid of them.

If the above make me a Grumpy Old Man ?……I couldnt give a toss.

  10. Haud on BIG JIMMY.

I was not suggesting that you are a grumpy old man.

Maybe you are just old, like me ( now 72 years young).

  11. Bamboo,

He will fill the much-vented requirement for a hard as nails CH and comes with a large dollop of Derry fenianism to add. He’ll do some things better than our current 2 but is a more limited footballer. Personally I’d advocate a ball-playing left footer (who could have an Arlene Foster tattoo for all I care) to balance the 3 at the back instead as a better use of our resources and don’t think we need to be moulding ourselves to go down to the level of SPFL hammer thrower who we beat with our alleged ‘pussies’ more than we lose or draw.

Ask yourself, would he have made 1 iota of difference against Motherwell at the weekend? Nope, but our 2 existing ball-playing CHs did (a tactic we don’t use enough).

    HH fella.

  12. Champions League EL QR3 draw @ 12 ..

    Possible Celtic opponents …

KuPS (FIN) or Slovan Bratislava (SVK)

Riga (LVA) or Tre Fiori (SMR)

    Sileks (MKD) or Drita (KOS)

The Bratislava tie might be the one to avoid as they forfeited their Champions League tie to Faroes team KI due to Covid-19 issues and will feel aggrieved to be in the Europa League.

Otherwise I’d be happy with the possibilities preferably at home on the 24th with fit Eddie and Ajeti plus Turnbull, Duffy (hopefully) and any other additions.

Draw live at 12 on UEFA.com

Hoping for a home draw ?

  13. We won’t be signing Duffy to sit on the bench, once he is up to speed and match fit I expect him to go straight into the team. Should be fine for the Cup Final in May.

  14. Siempre Celtic (formerly Traditionalist88) on

Duffy is a big threat at set pieces too, but primarily a tough, uncompromising CB which is what we are crying out for.

Sorty, had gone to bed when you replied last night.

You’re right about auld memories. Some of the more recent games I have seen have been forgotten already.

  16. WAVY

Well if we keep Ajer he would surely get more freedom to make his attacking bursts from the back.

  17. Sorry, are people saying winning the Europa League is viable?

Its been 10 years since somebody outside of Spain and England has won it.

  18. Bamboo,

Agreed but in matches where teams sit in I’m not sure he’s that essential. He will be when we are under the cosh (good euro away games for example) and of course he’ll be expected to muscle up the hammer thrower (if the refs allow him of course). A threat at corners is also to be welcomed.

I’m neutral on Duffy. See his value (as above) but think the poor side of his game is being conveniently ignored.

    Made me smile!

What I would say is that Taylor has a fine first touch. Controls cross field passes with ease.

No real pace or trick, but he’s come onto more of a game in the last 2 matches.

  20. What happens if both countries have equal Covid-19 restrictions on each other? Does that mean both teams have to forfeit the tie? I think all European competitions will end up being cancelled this year.

  21. Jamesgang,

He seems a hardworking kid with some redeeming features. It’s not his fault he doesn’t possess the raw materials to play LB at Celtic. It was an odd punt that we seem keen to make as a club. Pace and a trick are key to helping us break down stuffy defences. We just seem to recycle backwards when it hits Taylor. I feel for him. Maybe we can build those attributes in him but for that period we have to accept there is little attacking threat on the left against decent opposition.

  22. Re-Willie Pettigrew, good striker, I think he scored a hat-trick knocking us out the cup at Fir Park one year. Anyhoots, an English team’s scout came up to watch him and after the game he was asked about what he thought of him and I quote “Mmm really all he can do is score goals, so we won’t be pursuing” WHIT!! no signing a center forward that can only score goals!!! por cierto

  23. Young Dembele might be better biding his time, if rumours of him wanting away are true,a good chance Rogic and Ntcham leaving,…..

  24. I think Greg Taylor comes back so much as there’s very little movement in the box for him to hit anyone. Maybe with a striker like Ajeti or Kilmala, natural strikers, with the runs to match, that’ll change, por cierto.

  25. Neil Lennon & McCartney on

If we continue to play James Forrest on the left, I think we might get more from GregTaylor. Just a thought.
